This is an opinion column. The thoughts and viewpoints expressed are those of the author, Phil Scilippa. It’s been 17 long years since Rolling Stone published a list of the “500 Best Songs of All Time.” 17 years is quite a stretch of time to update the previous version, which many readers took issue with. That’s to be expected, though—after all, calling anything the “best” is subjective and entirely based on personal opinions. But the issue is: some people’s opinions are wrong. So after 17 years of moaning and complaining about the previous list, I took a gander at the new version released yesterday with a glimmer of hope in my eyes. But now I’m not sure why I bothered. Surely there should have been enough great music in t...
It’s somewhat of a golden rule to not mess with a good thing. But what about two? When it comes to music, mashup maestro Calb is a pro at rearranging cult-classic albums into interdisciplinary works of art. His latest project, Thriller Access Memories, is an electrifying synthesis Daft Punk‘s Random Access Memories and Michael Jackson‘s Thriller. Out August 3rd, Thriller Access Memories weaves together the dazzling instrumentals of RAM with Jackson’s vocals. Its resulting tracks, with names like “Instant Billie Jean” and “Fragments of Beat It,” are scintillating blends of disco and pop, built from beats and lyrics you probably already know by heart. The bright and dreamy closer, “I Feel Human Nature,&...
The first official post-Daft Punk musical project will land in summer 2022. Legendary Daft Punk member Thomas Bangalter has been confirmed to score a new ballet called Mythologies, which will run July 1-10, 2022 at the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux in Bordeaux, France. His music will be performed by the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine. Directed by choreographer and Ballet Preljocaj founder Angelin Preljocaj, the 90-minute production will explore the “founding myths that shape the collective imagination.” Daft Punk split up in February 2021 after 28 years. Daft Punk have been reincarnated as Walter White and Jesse Pinkman. Because, well, 2021. In the joyless absence of both Daft Punk and Breaking Bad, someone decided to create a deepfake marrying the two in a video as creepy as it is magnificent. For those unfamiliar with the scourge of deepfakes, they are fake bits of media that leverage artificial intelligence and machine learning to replace a person in an image or video with the likeness of another. Designed for deception, deepfakes are dangerous and have largely been developed for the purposes of political hoaxes, celebrity porn videos, and fake news. However, this particular deepfake is a treat. Or nightmare fuel, depending on your sense of humor. It depicts the show’s legendary protagonists bop...
You can now own a piece of Daft Punk history—if you’ve got $10,000 to burn. We’ve discovered the listing of an ultra-rare jacket, designed in 2005 by former Dior Homme creative director Hedi Slimane, which the seller claims was custom-made for the legendary electronic music duo. According to the seller, who listed the item on eBay, the leather jacket was a prototype for the final model worn by Daft Punk for many years, including in the “Epilogue” video that signaled their shocking split. “This is as rare as it gets,” the listing reads. Unexpected musical mashups became a staple of the Internet sometime in the early 2010s and have provided many laughs since. It’s hard to forget about Isosine’s viral 2011 “Psychosocial Baby” mashup of Justin Bieber and Slipknot, in which he laced the iconic masked metal band’s aggressive vocals over the happy-go-lucky pop beat of Bieber’s bubblegum hit “Baby.” The video has garnered well over 17 million views in the last decade. Now, YouTuber William Maranci has taken it upon himself to harness Slipknot‘s seminal “Psychosocial” for a 2021 mashup with none other than one of Daft Punk‘s greatest hits, “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger.” Recommended Articles Sure, it’s absolutely ridiculou...
What do Jack Ü, Led Zeppelin and Nicki Minaj all have in common? If you’re coming up blank, you’re not alone. Luckily, Spotify has found a peculiar way to put these artists in conversation with each other: UFOs. Inspired by a recent uptick in UFO sightings across the globe, the streaming giant has launched an eclectic playlist called “cl0se ënc0ūnteRs.” “We can’t explain this playlist,” its description reads. “Just like we can’t explain those UFO sightings.” Featuring 25 tracks across a wide range of genres and musical eras, “cl0se ënc0ūnteRs” manages to find space for songs like “Levitating” by Dua Lipa and DaBaby, “Creep” by Radiohead and “Come Fly With Me”...
Daft Punk wasn’t always Daft Punk. When Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter formed the duo in 1993, they were teenagers with synthesizers, a far cry from the decorated robots we adore today. In fact, it wasn’t until 1999 that they assumed their arcane robotic identities, lending to an air of mystery surrounding the years between. Beyond fables from music industry veterans, it’s tough to distinguish anything about the reclusive Bangalter and de Homem-Christo—even their appearances. And after their shocking split after 28 years, all we can do now is reminisce about the past, question the future, and complain about what could’ve been. Here are 10 times Daft Punk were photographed without their iconic helmets. Kevin Cummins Franck Courtès David Axelban...
Ever wondered what kind of music produces the most productivity? In search of the most popular music to code to, recruiting company KO2 conducted a study by analyzing various Spotify playlists curated specifically for coding before determining the most popular songs and artists amongst coders. Their study analyzed over 58,000 songs, with The Weeknd‘s “Blinding Lights” coming out on top. Second place was a tie between Hans Zimmer‘s “Day One” and [bds.u]’s “French Inhale, followed by Idealism’s “Both of Us,” Daft Punk‘s “Solar Sailer,” and two additional tracks by Zimmer: “Cornfield Chase” and “Time.” Daft Punk, the legendary electronic music duo who abruptly split in February 2021 aft...
When Daft Punk broke up in late February the announcement inspired a swirl of emotions in the legendary electronic music duo’s fanbase: anger, sadness, nostalgia, you name it. In the heat of the moment, one fan channeled their frustration in a particularly unique way by asking the government to intervene. “Bring back Daft Punk and we want a new album for the pain they’ve put us through,” the petition submitted to the UK Government and Parliament reads. “Daft Punk are legends and they can’t split up!” We can’t argue with that justification. The government unsurprisingly went on to reject the appeal. Apparently they don’t quite agree that they should be intervening in this matter, although they did dignify the petition with an entertaining respo...
Though 2021 marked the end of Daft Punk’s illustrious career, the legendary duo remain a prevalently influential force in the contemporary music scene. Journalist Ben Cardew looks to explore their seminal album Discovery in his upcoming book, Daft Punk’s Discovery: The Future Unfurled. Cardew has provided a preview of what information the book may hold. According to RA it features roughly 25 interviews, including excerpts from previously unheard interviews with the iconic robots.
