Live Performances, Interviews, and More This Week on SPIN’s Untitled Twitch Stream

If you didn’t see everything we did last week on SPIN’s Untitled Twitch Stream, you missed out on a hell of a string of performances. We had a release-day party with Brendan Kelly of the Lawrence Arms, an exclusive live performance of Rich Aucoin’s new single, and intimate sessions with Oscar Lang, Sonia Stein, and Sloane. Oh, and that’s not even including the surprise announcement of a Saturday afternoon with Black Veil Brides. That said, we might’ve outdone ourselves this week. We’re starting things off with a live set from Monogem before switching gears to close the week out with Skott, Petra Jarrar, and a very special episode of Kat Calls with the award-winning Elderbrook As per usual, you’ll need to check out Twitter and Instagram to get all of the info o...

Ghost of Tsushima Composer Ilan Eshkeri Brings the Sounds of 13th Century Japan to Modern Audiences

With the current console generation in its final days, much of the hype within the gaming industry is understandably centered around titles coming out for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. But just as the PS3 and Xbox 360 went out with a bang, the consoles of today still have some tricks up their sleeves as well. For Sony, that last hurrah may very well come in the form of Ghost of Tsushima, the final PlayStation exclusive in a generation that was dominated by them. Outside of multiplatform titles like Cyberpunk 2077, the July 17 release following a Japanese warrior in the 13th century marks what is likely the last major game for the PS4. Of course, no battle against the Mongol empire would be complete without an appropriate soundtrack, and the developers at Sucker Punch Productions wer...

We may even drop an unannounced Ghost of Tsushima stream or two this weekend in honor of the game’s release, but you’ll have to stay tuned to find out. It’s sure to be a busy week, so keep yourself informed through Twitter an...

Simpin’ Ain’t Easy?: NYT Breaks Down The Word Simp For The Masses

Source: skynesher / Getty In the sometimes virulent world of social media, one may have come across the word simp, which is almost universally said as a pejorative. However, the history of the word itself dates back and the New York Times is the latest publication to tackle the word and its apparent rise in modern culture. Ezra Marcus and Jonah Engel Bromwich tackled the root history of the word in a feature-length piece that published earlier this week, following in the footsteps of Metro, Inside Hook, and University of Stirling’s Brig Newspaper before it. In, ahem, simple terms, the word “simp” dates back to the early 20th Century and was explained then as the shortening of the word simpleton. However, as the Times notes in its piece, the word itself took on new life in the 1980s when To...

What Is My Culture?

Third Eye Blind founder, singer and songwriter Stephan Jenkins has interests that go beyond music. He will be sharing his viewpoints on a variety of issues on SPIN. Today, he takes a look at what is culture and how that defines who we are: “When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall one by one, unpitied…” E.burke The first pop song I ever heard was I want you back by the Jackson 5. I was all in for music for life right then and there. I was 6-years-old. I played for hours every day on my neighbor’s drums along with James Brown and Bob Marley for years until, by the age of 16, Clyde Stubblefield’s and Carly Barrett’s rhythms were ingrained in me. I believe I have an authentic lyrical style, but it would not exist without the daisy age of hip hop, and I would not sing...

The First Juneteenth Came at the End of the Civil War, This Year It’s During the Middle of a Revolution

Juneteenth historically has been a series of days, the ‘teen’ days of June, when we celebrate the end of slavery. It commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union Gen. Gordon Granger read federal orders in Galveston, Texas that all previously enslaved people in Texas were free — even though the Emancipation Proclamation had formally freed them almost two-and-a-half years earlier. On Dec. 6, 1865, the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified. It abolished slavery in the United States and said that “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.” So, although we celebrate an end to slavery, the 13th Amendment sti...

Cold War Kids, Best Ex, and More Headline SPIN’s Untitled Twitch Stream This Week

Jedi Fever: Our 1997 Interview With Mark Hamill

This article originally appeared in the March 1997 issue of SPIN. What did you think the first time you read the script? I was like is this a parody? I remember one of my lines was: “But we can’t turn our back on fear. Fear is our only defense.” I mean, who talks like that? Overall, I saw it as much closer to The Wizard of Oz than Star Trek. You’ve got a pirate, a wizard, a farm boy, a princess, and an evil overlord. We could’ve been traveling in a horse-drawn carriage. Did you know all along that Darth Vader was Luke’s father? No, and I was always asking. George told me that Luke’s father fell into a volcano. I wondered about Luke’s mother, too. I always thought that she should’ve been disguised as Boba Fett, that I could pull off Boba Fest’s mask and it’d be my mother who’d been secretly...
