Fresh Creem: New Documentary Gives a View Into the Nascent Days of Rock ‘N’ Roll

A year before Creem launched, in 1969, Rolling Stone launched. Both publications grabbed their name, more or less, from British bands. Dave Marsh called Creem’s home Detroit the ugliest part of the universe, and many boundary-pushing musicians emanated from there. It was a perfect breeding ground for “America’s Only Rock and Roll Magazine,” as they liked to call themselves. And now there’s a great new documentary about the magazine and its madcap days, called Creem: America’s Only Rock and Roll Magazine. With an impressive array of talking heads and vintage footage, the filmmakers have put together a delightful glimpse into the birth of an unlikely chronicler of the nascent music scene. Alice Cooper talks about the rock bands affectionately checking out the Motown acts. Michael Stipe was i...

Listen to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s Viking-centric Main Theme

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will undoubtedly be one of the top titles of the holiday season this year, and now gamers can hear the song that will soundtrack the series’ first journey into Nordic territory. Featuring metal drummer-turned-Nordic folk frontman Einar Selvik (who’s also appeared alongside his music on History Channel’s Vikings), the track serves as both a seemingly accurate and appropriate representation of 9th-century Viking culture as well as a launching point to excite players for their action-packed adventure. Created by veteran film and video game composers Sarah Schachner and Jesper Kyd, the theme carries the weight of protagonist Eivor’s personal conflicts and overarching journey throughout the game. “We wanted the main theme to simultan...

Atom Goren (of Atom and His Package) on the Washington Football Team

[Editor’s note: In 2001, Atom and His Package released the song “If You Own the Washington Redskins, You’re a Cock,” protesting the use of Native American mascots as a sports team’s nickname. Finally, after years of protests and swift pressure following the Black Lives Matter protests, the Washington professional football team changed its nickname earlier this month. Of course, we had to reach out to Atom Goren and to get his take on something that he says should have happened decades ago] I will happily accept most news — even if decades late — of progress for causes on the opposite end of the behavior spectrum from purposely being a jerk, so the name change of the football team from the Washington D.C.-ish area is welcome.  I’m not sure I have a perspective that adds anything to the...

Oyo APC, Governor Makinde in war of words over N100 billion bond

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, yesterday, said it has uncovered fresh plots by Governor Seyi Makinde to add to the debt profile of the state through what it called needless borrowing of N100 billion styled bond by the governor to finance some projects. But the state government, in a swift reaction, said the APC was frustrated and has exhibited its mercantile approach to governance. The war of words came on the heels of Governor Mankinde’s approval for the issuance of N100bn Private bond for circular road, Iseyin-Ogbomoso road, Ibadan Airport expansion. However, APC, in a statement by its Publicity Secretary in the state, Dr. Abdul-Azeez Olatunde, noted that the governor on his assumption of office, was shouting on the roof top of meeting debt from his predecessor, in the...
