This Friday, March 5, marks the 100th anniversary of the German silent horror film Nosferatu. An early example of German Expressionism, the film was directed by F.W. Murnau, who helmed other early cinematic masterpieces such as Sunrise (1927) and City Girl (1930), and starred Max Schreck as a Transylvanian vampire named Count Orlok. Orlok is looking for new digs, which brings estate agent Thomas Hutter (Gustav von Wangenheim) his way. Hutter has heard stories of the mysterious Orlok, mostly from locals who cower at the mere mention of the Count’s name. Paying no mind, Hutter makes his way to Orlok’s castle and is invited to stay for dinner. Hey, can’t beat a free meal! While dining, Hutter cuts his thumb with a steak knife and begins to bleed profusely. Like any good host, Orlok offers to ...

“We’re all doing the best we can,” says Bridget Everett. A mantra of many, especially throughout the past two years, but particularly relevant for the cabaret singer/comedian/actress’ HBO comedy Somebody Somewhere. The series follows Kansan Sam (Everett, who was born in Manhattan, Kansas), who returns to her hometown and struggles to fit in while grappling with loss and acceptance. She has a saving grace, though: Singing. By harnessing her passion — and meeting a like-minded group of outsiders —Sam embarks on a journey of self-discovery. Is she making all the right choices? No. But she’s trying — doing the best she can. Says Everett, “there’s going to be some hiccups along the way, for sure.” Everett, 49, a longtime New York City cabaret staple, has found herself in the mainstream spotligh...
Fellow five-time hosts Paul Rudd, Tina Fey, Steve Martin, Elliot Gould and Candice Bergen, as well as Conan O’Brien, inducted John Mulaney into Saturday Night Live‘s Five-Timers Club during the Feb. 26 episode. “Not to be a total b—-, but my Five-Timers show in December was supposed to be a lot better. That is before the whole cast decided to call in sick,” Rudd said, referring to his year-end episode that was interrupted by the surge in omicron cases and ended up only having a few castmembers in attendance. Explore See latest videos, charts and news “They all had COVID,” Bergen told Rudd, to which Martin joked, “So what? I have COVID right now. TV shows and movies have been using songs to supplement stories for decades. On HBO’s Euphoria, tracks don’t just add emotion and intensity to certain scenes, the music has become as central to the story as the characters in the show themselves. The songs featured span decades and genres — including a ‘60s era Andy Williams hit to “Nonstop” off Drake’s 2018 smash Scorpion. But how does the show’s music supervisor Jen Malone curate the perfect soundtrack? It’s actually not rocket science: “Through Spotify, Soundcloud, Instagram, and Twitter. I just find the artists and read all the blogs,” she told W Magazine shortly after the pilot came out in June 2019. “I have a good network of friends who know what’s poppin’ and use playlists. I go into the rabbit holes and see what’s good.” Explore See...
Broadway is back, and so too is the long-running Broadway Bares spectacular. The annual, one night only charity burlesque show will return — live, onstage and in-person — for its 30th anniversary celebration on June 26 at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York. For the last two years, COVID-19 sidelined the show to a virtual event. The theme for 2022 Broadway Bares show will be announced at a later date, along with any special guests that may take the stage. Previous installments of the show have included appearances from musicians like Billy Porter, Vanessa Williams, Cyndi Lauper and Adam Lambert. The extravaganza is a showcase for the dancers of Broadway and New York, and in 2019, more than 200 performers took the stage. The 2022 show will be directed by Laya Barak, who also helmed the 201...
Cyrano de Bergerac is one of the most prominent romantic figures in literary history — but even he’d admit his nose was even bigger! The public first got a whiff of the exploits of the seductive swordsman in 1897, in a play that bears his name and has been retold on stage and screen scores of time ever since. Despite the historically famous loaf of French bread on his face (which can be picked up by satellite cameras to this day) Cyrano has remained the grooviest guy from Gaul with all the gals. We caught up with the smooth-talking swordsman to talk about Cyrano the ELEVENTH film – starring Peter Dinklage as Cyrano and Haley Bennett as Roxanne (in theaters Feb. 25) – celebrating his powers of persuasion with the ladies to see if he thinks it passes his smell test. SPIN: Thanks for tak...
