Avril Lavigne Covers Adele’s “Hello” for Spotify Singles: Stream

Avril Lavigne released a new cover of Adele’s “Hello” on Friday, June 24th. The track comes courtesy of the singer’s new Spotify Singles session. On her version, Lavigne stays true to the spirit of Adele’s bombastic 2015 original, singing with regret and longing over a melancholy piano line. “Hello from the other side,” she wails with extra pain in her voice. “I must’ve called a thousand times/ To tell you I’m sorry for everything that I’ve done.” Meanwhile, she also recorded a new, acoustic rendition of “Love Sux,” the title track off her most recent studio set, which was released back in February and also includes the hit singles “Bite Me” and “Love It When You Hate Me” featuring Blackbear. Kacey Musgraves Covers Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love”: Stream

From golden hour to blue suede shoes, Kacey Musgraves has taken her pop-country sound backwards in time and shared a cover of Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love.” The song appears on the soundtrack of Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis. “Can’t Help Falling in Love” first appeared on Presley’s Blue Hawaii (1961), though its origins are much older, having been written by Hugo Peretti, Luigi Creatore, and George David Weiss from themes in the 1784 French ballad, “Plaisir d’amour.” Musgraves’ version is stripped back, forgoing the original’s heartbeat percussion and swooning choir, the better to put all the emphasis on the melancholy keys. There’s lots of reverb on her voice, making it sound as though she’s singing alone in a large, empty house. Her take on “Can’t Help Falling in Lov...

Lana Del Rey Unveils Cover of Father John Misty’s “Buddy’s Rendezvous”: Stream

Back in January, Father John Misty teased a snippet of Lana Del Rey covering his Chloë and the Next 20th Century cut “Buddy’s Rendezvous.” Now, the track has now been brought to all streaming services after previously only being available as a 7-inch single included in the limited edition box set of the album. Listen to it below. With airy, piano-driven production highlighted by strings and a saxophone, “Buddy’s Rendezvous” is the perfect match for Del Rey’s throwback aesthetic. Even though FJM has said the song is written from the perspective of a man who gives some “pretty shitty advice” to his daughter after getting out of the prison, certain lyrics like “What’s the point of being everybody’s girl?/ Maybe you think that way there’s no chance getting hurt/ Living for no one costs me...

Lorde Covers Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Run Away with Me” at London Concert: Watch

Lorde’s “Solar Power Tour” brought her to London on Friday night (June 3rd), and along with cuts from her latest album, the New Zealand pop star shouted out Canadian artist Carly Rae Jepsen with a dramatic cover of Jepsen’s 2015 banger “Run Away with Me.” Performed as a prelude to Melodrama ballad “Writer in the Dark,” Lorde’s take on “Run Away with Me” transformed the upbeat single into a slow piano moment. Singing the track’s infamous saxophone riff, the audience joined Lorde in for a massive run through of the chorus before the artist seamlessly transitioned into “Writer in the Dark.” “Just felt like doing it,” Lorde said. “Thank you for indulging me.” Fortunately for the London crowd, Lorde seemed more open to audience singalongs last night than she has been in the past. “Will you...

Kim Petras Releases Cover of Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill”: Stream

Kim Petras is first up the hill in what is sure to be a flood of new covers for Kate Bush’s iconic pop number “Running Up That Hill” after it received a crucial sync placement in the first volume of Stranger Things 4. The release has nothing to do with the Stranger Things sensation and its subsequent Billboard charts-jumping resurgence, but is actually just a coincidental case of good timing. The track arrives as an exclusive Amazon Original for Pride Month and currently leads off PROUD, Amazon Music’s marquee playlist for LGBTQ+ artists’ new releases. Stream it below. It’s been less than a week since Stranger Things 4 debuted on Netflix, and yet the Kate Bush classic has already permeated the zeitgeist thanks to its part in the new season’s plot. While acknowledging her long-held personal...

Robert Fripp and Toyah Rip Through Hole’s “Celebrity Skin”: Watch

Rock and roll couple Robert Fripp and Toyah are back with yet another eyebrow-raising cover, as this week they’ve tackled Hole’s 1998 classic “Celebrity Skin.” Backed by hand-painted signs declaring “Celebrity Fripp” and “Hail Queen Courtney,” Fripp’s crunchy power chords and Toyah’s operatic vocals manage to make “Celebrity Skin” sound lo-fi and extra dramatic all at once. Even better, Toyah — always one for elaborate costumes — dons a pink dress that looks exactly like something Love herself would’ve worn in her Hollywood actress/pop star era. The clip ends with a few wholesome outtakes, where Fripp punctuates every bum note with an impassioned “Bollocks!” Watch the whole grungy performance below. Fripp and Toyah are the second stars to cover Hole as of late, as Doja Cat recently took on...

Olivia Rodrigo Advocates for Gun Control, Covers “You Oughta Know” with Alanis Morissette: Watch

Throughout her “Sour World Tour,” pop phenom Olivia Rodrigo has paid homage to the women who came before her by both covering their songs and speaking up about issues like abortion rights. During her concert on Tuesday night in Los Angeles, the young superstar did both. In addition to recruiting Alanis Morissette for a cover of “You Oughta Know,” Rodrigo advocated for stricter gun control in the wake of the latest school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. Rodrigo told the crowd at Greek Theatre that she was “devastated” by the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School that left 19 children and two teachers dead. “We should never have to worry about our safety or our lives in places that are dedicated to our learning and growing,” she said. “And I’m so heartbroken that this is the reality that we’re ...

Olivia Rodrigo Covers No Doubt’s “Just a Girl”: Watch

Olivia Rodrigo seems acutely aware that she’s standing on the shoulders of giants, and during her “Sour World Tour” she has continued to pay homage to the women who came before. On Friday night in Philadelphia, Rodrigo honored Gwen Stefani and No Doubt with a rollicking cover of “Just a Girl.” Wearing black boots underneath a flowing white dress with a structured corset top, Rodrigo stomped across the stage of The Met as she powered through the ska pop classic. She’s become a comfortable live performer, and enjoyed leaning over the front row to deliver the lines, “The moment that I step outside,” at a whisper, before uncorking a howl on, “So many reasons for me to run and hide!” The 19-year-old’s audience wasn’t totally unfamiliar with the song, and while they let most of the ver...
