Dave Grohl Covers Janis Ian’s “At Seventeen” with Almost-17-Year-Old Daughter Violet: Watch

Though the pipes she flaunted at September’s Taylor Hawkins tribute concerts belie her youth, Violet Grohl will celebrate her 17th birthday in a few months. She and her dad Dave Grohl covered Janis Ian’s apty-titled “At Seventeen” for the fourth night of the elder Grohl’s 2022 Hanukkah Sessions. Now on its third year, Grohl’s Hanukkah Sessions are meant to highlight the legacies of iconic Jewish musicians; Ian absolutely fits the bill, and we can’t think of few songs more heartwrenching for a father-daughter cover than the folk artist’s 1975 magnum opus. Watch the video of their performance below. The 2022 iteration of Grohl’s Hanukkah Sessions previously featured covers of Blood, Sweat & Tears’ “Spinning Wheel” with Judd Apatow and Greg Kurstin, “Get the Party Started” with P!nk, and ...

Phoebe Bridgers Covers “These Days” with Jack Antonoff, Lucy Dacus, Weyes Blood, and Matty Healy: Watch

Phoebe Bridgers has a lot of friends who are fellow famous musicians, and she brought out just a handful of them while performing at Jack Antonoff’s Ally Coalition Talent Show: Lucy Dacus, Weyes Blood, Matty Healy, Trey Anastasio, and Antonoff himself all gathered around the microphone with her at the benefit concert for a rendition of the “These Days,” the Jackson Browne-written song made famous by Nico. Organized by Antonoff and his fashion designer sister Rachel, the philanthropic talent show — which just made its in-person return since its last outing in 2019 — benefits non-profits dedicated to bettering the lives of LGBTQ+ youth. Its lineup was a surprise until the show began, but it certainly delivered. In addition to the Nico cover, Bridgers sang her epic Punisher closing track...

10-Year-Old Girl Fronts Crushing Cover of Slipknot’s “The Heretic Anthem”: Watch

Ten-year-old Zoë Franziska channels her inner Corey Taylor on a new cover of Slipknot’s “The Heretic Anthem,” the latest video from the metal-loving folks at the O’Keefe Music Foundation. The performance is introduced by four-year-old Laura, who offers up the song’s very metal countdown 8-7-6-6-6-5-4-3-2-1 to get things started. Then, Zoë and her backing band — ranging in age from seven through 17 — proceed to deliver a crushing rendition of the classic track off Slipknot’s 2001 album Iowa. In some of the previous performances produced by the O’Keefe Music Foundation, the singer has a sweet kid’s voice set against heavy instrumentals, but Zoë’s vocals are metal to the bone. Seeing her scream, “If you’re 555, then I’m 666,” is quite the sight. Advertisement Related Video Meanwhile, 12-year-...

Harry Styles Honors Late Christine McVie with “Songbird” Cover in Chile: Watch

It’s no secret that the music and culture of the ’70s are big inspirations for Harry Styles. Naturally, the pop star paid tribute to Christine McVie, who died earlier this week at 79, with a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Songbird” at his show in Santiago, Chile last night. “Songbird” was one of the songs written and sung solely by McVie on Fleetwood Mac’s 1977 masterpiece Rumours. Styles doesn’t often play instruments during his shows, but he stayed faithful to the original recording by playing acoustic guitar, backed by a piano. The vocal melodies are also higher than Styles tends to go for in his own songs, but he manages to pull it off exceptionally well. After the song finished, he blew a kiss towards the sky, and from what we’ve seen in clips from the performance, there weren’t many dry e...

Julia Jacklin Covers Céline Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” at Madrid Show: Watch

Ever since we talked to Julia Jacklin last August about her love for Céline Dion, we’ve been patiently waiting to hear her sing the Canadian crooner’s stone-cold classic “My Heart Will Go On.” Our prayers were answered last night, as Jacklin finally covered the Titanic anthem at her show in Madrid. Jacklin would probably agree that nobody can belt quite like Dion, but with backing vocals from her tour support Erin Rae, the Aussie’s rendition of “My Heart Will Go On” is gorgeous in its own right. They even go for the key change! And we’d bet Jacklin has been thinking about covering the song for a while, considering how much she fawned over Dion in her interview with Consequence: “If someone is shit-talking Céline Dion, I’m like, ‘What do you find joy in?’” she said. “I’m not...

Nandi Bushell and Younger Brother Thomas Jam Rage Against the Machine’s “Killing in the Name”: Watch

The talent runs deep in the Bushell family! Over the past few years, 12-year-old Nandi has wowed the world with her remarkable musical skills, and now her little brother Thomas is showcasing his chops behind the drum kit. The pair take on the Rage Against the Machine classic “Killing in the Name” in a new jam session. In the clip posted to Instagram, Nandi gives off some serious Tom Morello vibes as she holds the guitar high up in the RATM guitarist’s signature playing style, while Thomas pounds away at the kit like a young Brad Wilk. With equal parts joy and rage, they even give us a joint scream of “killing in the name of” partway into the minute-long jam. “A family that Rages together, stays together,” wrote Nandi alongside the video clip. “I love jamming with my brother @thomas_bushell...

Robert Fripp and Toyah Put the Squeak in Metallica’s “Seek & Destroy”: Watch

Robert Fripp and Toyah Willcox return to covering the band that truly sent their “Sunday Lunch” performances viral with a rendition of Metallica’s “Seek & Destroy” in the latest edition of the popular YouTube series. It was the married couple’s version of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” in January 2021, featuring Toyah riding an exercise bike while wearing a revealing top that took the “Sunday Lunch” series to new heights. That clip has racked up more than 8 million views to date. The new cover of “Seek & Destroy,” which is misleadingly titled “Search and Destroy” in the YouTube title — making us initially think it was a take on the Iggy & The Stooges song — finds Fripp ripping through the thrash riff while Toyah sings the early Metallica classic. Wearing a camouflage hat and a tie...

Jack White Covers Nirvana’s “Heart-Shaped Box” in Malaysia: Watch

If you’ve ever wondered what Nirvana would sound like with a bit of a rockabilly twang, Jack White has you covered thanks to a new live rendition of the grunge icons’ 1993 classic “Heart-Shaped Box.” Watch clips of his performance from a recent show in Malaysia below. White may have been praised as the savior of rock and roll in the early 2000s, but he’s made his other influences clear over the years, and it’s equally evident in his rendition of “Heart Shaped Box.” He sings the tune a bit higher than Cobain once did, and his guitar veers more into blues rock than Seattle fuzz. The audience didn’t seem to mind these changes, however, joining White for a hearty scream-along of the song’s “Hey, wait” chorus. After all, any Nirvana cover is a guaranteed crowd pleaser in 2022. It’s been a busy ...
