The Lemonheads Perform ‘Into Your Arms’ With Courtney Love

The Lemonheads are currently in Europe touring in honor of the 30th anniversary of It’s a Shame About Ray. The band, which kicked off their run earlier this year with a set at our SXSW event, are playing the album in full. At last night’s show in London, the group brought up Courtney Love, who contributed vocals on “Into Your Arms.” Hopping on stage after covering the Bevis Frond’s “Lights Are Changing,” Love told the crowd that singer/guitarist Evan Dando “doesn’t have a bad bone in his body.” [embedded content][embedded content] [embedded content][embedded content] Jawbreaker may disagree with Love’s sentiment. Earlier this year, the Lemonheads were kicked off the punk band’s Dear You anniversary tour after one show. Following their dismissal, Dando tweeted, “I just want anyone and ...

The 20 Best Riot Grrrl Songs

“Even though I did punch her, I thought she was a genius,” Courtney Love said of Kathleen Hanna in 2002, while attempting to explain riot grrrl to The Strokes live on MTV. Twenty years later, and about 30 since the movement’s inception, trying to define it still feels fraught. Riot grrrl was always a nebulous concept, a label intended to be adopted and personalized by young feminist punks globally. But by the early aughts, once the revolution had become FUBAR from in-fighting, unwanted media attention, and accusations of racist and transphobic exclusion, it already felt like a dream of the past. In that sense, riot grrrl was a specific movement born out of a specific moment in time, and a handful of specific places (usually Washington, state and D.C.). It is not a catch-all label for ...

Courtney Love Addresses Complicated Relationship With Mark Lanegan on Instagram, Deletes Post

Courtney Love and Mark Lanegan had a long, complicated relationship, some of which was documented in the late musician’s recent memoir Sing Backwards and Weep. A few days after news broke of his passing, Love took to Instagram to address his death, and gripe about how he portrayed her in his book. “Rip mark. You were a good friend to me & Kurt,” she wrote on Instagram (via Stereogum). “even if in your book you wrote our close friendship out , I’m still baffled & so sad about that. But sigh. ‘market forces of sexism’ #. It is what it is.” She then went on to slam her inclusion in Anthony Kiedis’ memoir too. “In #anthonykiedis’ book #scartissue despite us being roommates and hanging out ALOT & also in BED, for years previous to me begging Kurt not to kick @chilipeppers off t...

Courtney Love on ‘Rape Me’ in Succession: ‘I’ve Never Been So Proud’

(Spoiler alert!) Calling all Succession and Nirvana fans: if you saw this week’s episode of HBO’s hit series based on Rupert Murdoch’s media dynasty, you saw the scene where Kendall Roy interrupted his sister’s town hall speech with “Rape Me” blaring over loudspeakers. Courtney Love wrote an approving message on her Instagram story: “I was in the room watching (agog) as this song was written in about an hour, and I’ve never been so proud of approving one of Kurt’s songs, this cue in @succession is as if they truly understood kc 🔥 what he was screaming his heart out … without specifics … about. Watch Courtney Love Emotionally Cover Britney Spears’ ‘Lucky’

Yesterday, the New Yorker published an extensive investigative piece about Britney Spears’ conservatorship. Courtney Love spoke to journalist Ronan Farrow about her encounters with the infamous Hollywood figure Sam Lutfi (she calls him a “street hustler” in the article) and business manager Lou Taylor. “An honor to speak to an honorable man. Speak again soon,” she tweeted when the story went live. A few hours later, the Hole frontwoman shared an acoustic cover of Spears’ Oops…I Did It Again track “Lucky,” which is all about the loneliness that so often accompanies fame. Near the end of the performance, Love was wiping away tears. See Courtney Love cover Britney Spears’ “Lucky” below. Last week, Spears spoke openly about her conservatorship for the first time during a he...

Courtney Love Says Olivia Rodrigo Ripped Off Live Through This Album Cover

Yet another controversy has roped in Courtney Love but this time in a small online skirmish over artistic thievery aimed at a photo for ascending pop singer Olivia Rodrigo’s recent livestream of her debut album, Sour. Love accused Rodrigo of ripping off Hole’s 1994 Live Through This album art, without permission or notice, to add insult to injury. At first, it wasn’t that way. On Thursday, Love posted the Rodrigo photo resembling the Hole album on Instagram with a playful jab of a caption: “Spot the difference! #twinning! @oliviarodrigo 😉👸👸” Commenting on it shortly after Love’s post, Rodrigo cleverly responded with “love u and live through this sooooo much,” pretty much conceding to either finding inspiration in it or straight stealing it outright. It’s u...

Courtney Love seems to have put the definitive kibosh on a Hole reunion, telling Vogue, there is “absolutely not” going be a reunion. “And you guys have gotta get over it. Our old manager Peter Mensch calls once a year to ask about a reunion: ‘Hey, just doing my thing I do every year with you and Jimmy Page [of Led Zeppelin].’ I’m so honored to be in that company, but it’s just not gonna happen,” Love said. So if you were hoping for any kind of tour, reunion or whatever, well, there’s your answer. In more positive news, Love shared a new song today, a cover of “California Stars,” a tune written by Woody Guthrie and recorded by Billy Bragg and Jeff Tweedy. During the pandemic, Love has been living in a London hotel and taking guitar lessons with British musician Juliette Jackson&n...

Courtney Love Says She Stopped Acting Due to #MeToo Incidents

Hole frontwoman Courtney Love recently revealed that she’d stopped acting — something she said she loved doing — because of  “a bunch of #MeToo” incidents. While she had memorable moments in 1986’s Sid & Nancy, Love’s first major role was in  1996’s The People vs. Larry Flynt, which earned her a Best Actress Golden Globe nomination for playing Althea Leasure Flynt. Subsequently, Love appeared in films including in 200 Cigarettes,  Julie Johnson, Man on the Moon and Trapped. But she stepped away from the screen for a time, as she detailed in an Instagram post. Love writes, “For a few years, because of Milos Forman, I was a professional actress and a movie star. It was fun as hell. I was nominated for best actress, for a Golden Globe. One day I might talk about i...

Courtney Love Calls 2004 Solo Album One of Her ‘Great Shames’

Count on Courtney Love to bring the bizarre levity, most recently via a social media confession calling her 2004 America’s Sweetheart solo album one of her “life’s great shames,” like “Steve Coogan, or crack.” The Instagram caption goes on to explain why: “just the period, sloppiness, men, money, drugs, nightmare….” That said, the Hole frontwoman says, “Maybe one day I won’t hate that record. It has some good songs.” Coogan dated British actor/comedian Coogan for a brief period in 2005. The cherry on top of the post is a photo of Love driving a car painted with the pinup-style artwork from America’s Sweetheart album. It’s captioned, “a happy Australian cruising around, Australia… “America’s Sweetheart“ having her revenge, on, Melbourne? AMAZING!” Other adjectives besides amazing ...
