Indoor spaces are still a high-risk area during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. It’s an unfortunate reality that has already cost the film industry $20 billion this year, despite some theaters choosing to reopen this summer and others suing for not being able to. But now, Alamo Drafthouse has a new workaround option that falls squarely in the middle: rent an entire theater for yourself! According to Entertainment Weekly, the beloved Texas-based theater chain is allowing patrons to rent out an entire theater for themselves — as well as “their pandemic pod family and friends” — for $150. Independent venues around the world are struggling to reopen during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, leaving entertainers no choice but to flock to outdoor spaces to host drive-in concerts and raves. It looks like Hannibal Buress is ready to follow the trend because the comedian just announced a drive-in comedy tour of his own. Buress is called the trek “Let’s See How This Goes” — which may be the greatest tour name of the year — in partnership with Hotbox & Outback Presents, the same team behind Marc Rebillet’s notable run earlier this summer. German Scientists Are Throwing a Concert “Experiment” to Test How COVID-19 Spreads
The coronavirus pandemic has essentially frozen the live music industry until a vaccine becomes widely available. It’s easy to understand why considering science has proven that the virus spreads faster in indoor environments and shows have long been a breeding ground for excessive spit, snot, and germs. Floating Movie Theaters Coming to New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and More US Cities
Parisians were treated to a floating movie theater adventure this past weekend. Apparently it went swimmingly because now a different company, Beyond Cinema, is bringing a similar idea to America. Starting this September, Beyond Cinema will launch 12 to 24 mini boats — each of which can hold upwards of eight people — in US cities. Movies will be projected on a large screen outdoors near the water, and patrons can pay to watch the film in comfort from one of the floating vessels. The Australian entertainment and event company originally found success with their “boat-in” events back during pre-COVID times. Music fans in the UK may get to experience live music sooner than some health experts have predicted. The country’s first socially distanced music venue, the Virgin Money Unity Arena, will allegedly open in Newcastle this summer, reports NME. The venue was created in a partnership between the teams behind This Is Tomorrow Festival, SSD Concerts, and Virgin Money. Using a series of mapped out “viewing areas” for individuals and small groups akin to raised platforms — each viewing area is at least two meters away from the other viewing areas surrounding it, generously abiding by social distancing measures — they were able to transform the outdoor space at Newcastle Racecourse into a music festival-style layout. Crowdfunding Campaign Launched to Save Boston Venue Great Scott
Last month, Boston music venue Great Scott announced it was closing due to disagreements with the landlord. Because it’s a local institution, the public reaction was huge, with people working on multiple petitions and fundraising efforts to benefit the staff. Now, a community investment campaign has been launched by Great Scott’s booking agent, Carl Lavin, to save the beloved venue. Earlier this week, Lavin announced he’s partnering with Mainvest — an investment crowdfunding platform focused on helping local businesses — to raise money to re-open Great Scott for good, reports Vanyaland.
