As part of Consequence’s 15th anniversary, we asked a bunch of former CoSigned artists to reflect on their own last 15 years. To round out the year, we’re bringing you one more Consequestionnaire from Sunflower Bean, the only band to be CoSigned twice. To help close out the year, we’re delivering one more taste of the Consequence: 15 Years of Sound celebration. One of the respondents to our Consequestionnaire happens to be the only band to ever receive both the CoSign (September 2016) and Artist of the Month (March 2018) designations: Sunflower Bean. (For what it’s worth, we’ve recently coalesced everything back under the CoSign banner.) But the New York City natives have been more than worth the double-up. Since releasing their Human Ceremony in ’16, the Sunflower Bean have grown int...
It’s Consequence‘s 15th anniversary, and all September long we’ll be sharing artist-curated playlists that reflect the evolution of their music taste throughout the last 15 years. For today’s My15 playlist, Adam Melchor shares his selections. What do Father John Misty and Rosalía have in common? In addition to being two talented and beloved entertainers, they also both appear on this reflective playlist from indie-pop singer-songwriter Adam Melchor. Over the last fifteen years, to say there’s been an array of music worth digging into feels like a severe understatement. What Melchor’s list reflects is an affinity for introspection, with artists like Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens, and Phoebe Bridgers all making appearances on the playlist. For someone with a sound that often skews into tender, re...

Over the past two weeks, we’ve been celebrating Consequence’s 15th anniversary with a series of rankings, staff lists, essays, playlists, questionnaires, videos, and other retrospectives taking the pulse of a decade-and-a-half of culture. And while it’s been a lot of fun to take a stroll down memory lane, we now want to turn the tables and ask you: What have you been obsessed with these past 15 years? After all, there would be no 15 years of Consequence without our loyal audience, a community of music, movie, and TV lovers who are literally the reason we do what we do every day. To that end, we’ve come up with a simple Consequence 15 Readers Survey. It shouldn’t take too long to fill out, but we want your honest takes. Who knows, we might even share some of the most fun responses on ...
It’s Consequence‘s 15th anniversary, and all September long we’ll be sharing artist-curated playlists that reflect the evolution of their music taste throughout the last 15 years. For today’s My15 playlist, Son Little offers up a genre-fusing collection of tunes. Aaron Livingston, the mastermind behind Son Little, has perfected his blend of vintage blues, old-school soul, and laid-back hip-hop. Tracks like “bend yr ear” from his latest album, Like Neptune, showcase both his mastery of genre-fusing songwriting and his undeniable charisma. Livingston’s curated My15 playlist exhibits the same mix of styles that gives his music its unique flavor. Featuring tracks from artists like Rihanna, Tame Impala, Radiohead, and Kendrick Lamar, Livingston offers up a mix of cutting-edge, innovative tracks...
It’s Consequence’s 15th anniversary, and all month long we are featuring a series of retrospective features and essays encompassing our publication’s history — as well as the entertainment landscape at large. We’re also giving some of our past CoSigned artists a chance to look back at the last 15 years with our Consequestionnaire; today’s respondents are Flatbush Zombies. One of the best parts of our Consequence: 15 Years of Sound celebration has been catching up with some of our favorite artists. We sent out our Consequestionnaire to a number of our former Artists of the Month and CoSigns to see what they had to say about the last decade and a half, and how their career has grown since we gave them our stamp of approval. Today, we reconnect with Flatbush Zombies, who we CoSigned way ...
It’s Consequence‘s 15th anniversary, and all September long we’ll be sharing artist-curated playlists that reflect the evolution of their music taste throughout the last 15 years. For today’s My15 playlist, Magdalena Bay assemble an eclectic selection of pop classics, indie jams, and prog rock. Magdalena Bay are pop stars of an alternate reality. The duo, which consists of Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Levin, has an affinity for sophisticated synth pop, with visuals that span from online chaos to uncanny valley-esque skits. And though their bubbly vision of pop in their 2021 debut album Mercurial World — which is set to receive a deluxe edition on September 23rd — is a fascinating foray into their sound, it’s also a celebration of the music they grew up on. Magdalena Bay’s concoctio...
It’s Consequence‘s 15th anniversary, and all September long we’ll be sharing artist-curated playlists that reflect the evolution of their music taste throughout the last 15 years. For today’s My15 playlist, Canadian indie rock band Metric shares their selections. Metric‘s frontwoman Emily Haines claims that, aside from the global hardships of the last few years, crafting the band’s new album Formentera was “one of the happiest processes making an album ever.” It’s evident in the very name of the album, which references an idyllic island near Ibizia off the coast of Spain, and evident in the band’s ambitious indie rock jams. For a group that has been around for nearly 20 years — not to mention one that has significant indie notoriety — it’s a pleasure to see Metric so united and enthusiasti...
It’s Consequence’s 15th anniversary, and all September long we’ll be publishing a series of retrospective pieces encompassing our publication’s own history — and the entertainment landscape in general. Today, we’re opening up a discussion about how we decide to cover artists and their music — or not — when it all goes wrong. When it comes to language around acceptable behavior, there’s a tendency towards binary thinking, as if breaking a taboo were the same as flipping a switch — “yes” to “no,” “politically correct,” to “politically incorrect,” “uncanceled” to “canceled.” But that’s not exactly what happens. Let’s say, for example, that a great songwriter — a songwriter we all love — has been accused of something that a lot of people think is terrible. It could be violence or prejudic...
