The story behind Alison Wonderland’s Loner will soon be put to the page. Wonderland’s stunning third album is one of isolation, loss, panic, grief and prevailing. It was perhaps her most vulnerable project to date, born out of a particularly challenging personal chapter amid the throes of the pandemic. Now, Loner has found a new medium: as a graphic novel. Working with Z2 Comics, Wonderland’s journey is documented as a multi-dimensional, metaphysical experience in prismatic color. In a twist of our new music feature Origins, Jimmy Eat World’s Jim Adkins explains the inspiration behind their new graphic novel, 555. Z2 Comics have quickly become the go-to company for music-related graphic novels. Amongst their many projects, they turned Sturgill Simpson’s Sound & Fury into a stunning visual anthology, illustrated the origin story of Blondie in Against All Odds, and got artists like Slipknot’s Corey Taylor to pen chapters for an adaptation of Anthrax’s Among the Living LP. Now, they’ve teamed with Jimmy Eat World to create a graphic novel expansion of the world the band created in their video for “555.” When it came to making the video for “555” — one of the singles off JEW’s latest album, Surviving — the band were forced to do something on the ...

When Sturgill Simpson released Sound & Fury back in 2019, it wasn’t just one of the best albums of that year, it created a whole world. The record was paired with a Netflix anime film of the same name, showcasing the visual styles of Jumpei Miszusaki, Takashi Okazaki, Kôji Morimoto, and other animators to depict a post-apocalyptic corporate hellscape. Now, a new graphic novel is set to reveal how the greed of Slick and Slim’s 1,000 Likes Corporation brought about the world of Sound & Fury and the wrath of the mysterious samurai driver. Coming via Z2 Comics (the same folks behind the recently announced Blondie graphic novel), the graphic novel was written by acclaimed comic writers Jason Aaron (Avengers vs X-Men, Thor, Southern Bastards) and Ryan Cady (MAGDALENA, Infinite Dark). An ...
It’s a tale as old as time: young woman is traumatized, radicalized, and experimented upon; A.I. takes physical form as a robot before evolving into something more traditionally, distinctly human. Woman and humanoid robot fall in love before humanoid robot is killed and woman, in her grief, semi-accidentally takes an entire town of people hostage. Explaining the concept of WandaVision to anyone not familiar with the expansive Marvel Cinematic Universe presents a bit of a challenge. Perhaps the even bigger challenge is then trying to communicate the way that the show so effectively becomes a truly emotional story. Over the course of nine episodes, WandaVision shares more about the two titular characters than the five movies that featured Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff or the seven in whi...
Blondie have announced a new graphic novel called Against the Odds. It’s a collaboration with Z2 Comics that will illustrate the story of the iconic new-wave band’s rise in the New York art and fashion world. The book is Blondie’s first foray into the world of comics, but they’re the only newbies involved with the project. Against the Odds was illustrated by the acclaimed comic book artist John McCrea, and it was co-written by Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti — the duo who penned DC Comics’ relaunch of Harley Quinn. With vivid color, the book will chronicle the band’s come-up in Manhattan’s notorious punk and art world of the 1970s. Conner was actually there, watching Blondie at clubs like CBGB’s and Max’s Kansas City and rubbing shoulders with the likes of Andy Warhol and David Bowi...
Cue up the Danny Elfman score — maybe even Prince’s “Batdance” — and get ready to revisit Tim Burton’s Batman universe. Today, DC Comics announced they’re spending this summer in the filmmaker’s Dark Deco’d Gotham City with Batman ’89. Written by original screenwriter Sam Hamm and brought to the page by artist Joe Quinones, the DC Digital First series will tell all new adventures featuring Michael Keaton’s incarnation of Batman.
