Randall Park Learns His Store Is “The Last One” in First Trailer for Blockbuster: Watch

Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for Blockbuster, a workplace sitcom about the last store in a once-mighty video rental empire. The preview opens with Timmy Yoon (Randall Park) learning that “seven more Blockbusters just closed. You’re officially the last one on earth.” Timmy has worked at Blockbuster since his teenage years, and he seems to live his life being kind and wishing everything would just rewind. “No one’s going anywhere,” he announces to his staff, “Because everything is under control.” His ragtag crew is made up of Eliza (Melissa Fumero), Connie (Olga Merediz), Carlos (Tyler Herrera), Hannah (Madeline Arthur), and Kala (Kamaia Fairburn). Never far from the action is strip mall owner Percy (J.B. Smoove), who serves Timmy an eviction notice. “I feel bad real bad ...

David Harbour Isn’t Your Typical Mall Santa in Trailer for Violent Night: Watch

Forget The Nightmare Before Christmas — Christmas is the nightmare in the official trailer for Violent Night, Universal Pictures and 87North’s forthcoming holiday-horror-comedy that stars David Harbour as one grisly Saint Nicholas. The film is slated to hit theaters December 2nd. In the latest from director Tommy Wirkola, all is not calm and bright. Santa Claus’ usual holiday routine is thwarted when a team of mercenaries breaks into a wealthy family compound, holding everyone inside hostage. To make matters even less merry, it’s Christmas Eve, and Santa’s in the middle of his grand gift delivery; his naughty list is about to get a lot longer as he begins to avenge the bandits in the name of saving Christmas. We can expect to see a lot of red, and not just in ...

NYFF Review: Noah Baumbach Delightfully Skewers Our Fear of Death in White Noise

This review is part of our coverage of the 2022 New York Film Festival. The Pitch: Dom LeLillo’s White Noise is one of those “great American novels” long thought to be unfilmable, a scattered, acerbic takedown of late American capitalism and its incessant need to distract from the inevitability of death with movies, culture, conversation, stuff. And honestly, it’s oddly fitting that the filmmaker who’d finally tackle it would be Indie Darling Noah Baumbach himself: Like DeLillo, he too is concerned with the fits and foibles of academia, the crumbling nature of the family unit, the ways we cling to ephemera just to keep ourselves from falling apart. And so it is with this three-part tale of the Gladney clan, a nuclear family about to go metaphorically (and in some ways litera...

American Pie Reboot to Traumatize New Generation of Pastries

Preheat your ovens and clean your flutes, a reboot of American Pie is in the works at Universal. As The Hollywood Reporter notes, this “fresh take” on the horny high school romp comes from filmmaker Sujata Day, who played Sarah on Insecure and who made her directorial debut with the 2020 spelling bee dramedy, Definition Please. All things considered, a fresh take is probably a good idea, considering that the male entitlement of the original hasn’t aged well. But on the bright side, it did wonders for the cast. Jennifer Coolidge recently said her role as Stifler’s mom allowed her to sleep with “200 people” that she wouldn’t have otherwise. 1997’s American Pie was directed by Paul Weitz from a script by Adam Herz. It starred Jason Biggs, Alys...

Who Should Take Over The Daily Show After Trevor Noah Leaves?

The Daily Show was must-see viewing during the last days of a time when American TV viewing habits were a lot more predictable. Today, the continued fragmentation of late night has meant that every show, not just The Daily Show, has had a reduced impact on pop culture — but the show’s legacy endures from the Jon Stewart era, making current host Trevor Noah’s announcement that he plans to leave the series after seven years very interesting news for any comedian who might be interested in suiting up for a desk job. Noah’s departure actually follows how Stewart announced his plans to leave The Daily Show without an immediate successor in place. Noah was revealed as the new host several weeks following Stewart’s departure, after making spending six months as a correspondent, and if the series ...

Reservation Dogs Renewed for Season 3

Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi’s FX comedy Reservation Dogs has been renewed for Season 3. The third installment is set to air in 2023, exclusively on Hulu. When it debuted in 2021, Reservation Dogs was the first television series written and directed entirely by Indigenous people. Filmed on location in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, the series follows a group of Native American teenagers (Devery Jacobs, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Paulina Alexis, and Lane Factor) who take to scheming and stealing in order to save up for a trip to California. In its second season, however, that plan began to fall apart. “I couldn’t be more proud of this show that I created with my friend Taika Waititi,” Harjo said in a statement. “It was born out of a conversation in Taika’s kitchen and has now made its way into...

Philadelphia Flyers Mascot Gritty Stirred Up Trouble on Abbott Elementary Season 2 Premiere

School is back in session at Abbott Elementary, and the Emmy-winning show returned with a cameo from hometown hero (or terror, depending on who you ask) Philadelphia Flyers mascot Gritty. “I managed to get the only celebrity that matters to come and surprise our kids on the first day of school,” Abbott Elementary creator and star Quinta Brunson’s character Janine Teagues said to open the episode. “America’s favorite orange furry sweetheart: Flyers mascot Gritty!” Apparently, everyone was into the idea except for fellow teacher Gregory Eddie (Tyler James Williams), who said he doesn’t “get” the fluffy orange monster. And since this a sitcom, there was a mix-up about the timing of Gritty’s visit. Advertisement Related Video Check out a clip from Gritty’s appearance on Abbott Elemen...

Tiffany Haddish and Aries Spears Child Molestation Lawsuit Dismissed

Tiffany Haddish and Aries Spears are no longer facing a child molestation lawsuit after it was dropped by the plaintiff, according to TMZ. The Jane Doe who filed the suit asked the judge to dismiss the case with prejudice, meaning it can’t be refiled. “My family and I have known Tiffany Haddish for many years — and we now know that she would never harm me or my brother or help anyone else do anything that could harm us,” the woman said in a statement. “We wish Tiffany the best and are glad that we can all put this behind us.” In the lawsuit, the plaintiff, now 22, and her brother, now 14, recounted being filmed for sketch videos by Haddish and Spears in which they performed sexually suggestive acts. It accused both comedians of intentional infliction of emotional distress, gross negli...
