K-pop soloist BIBI could be described as a free spirit, but that feels a bit too reductive for an artist as ever-evolving as her. BIBI pulls from hip-hop, R&B, and pop sounds as she pleases, and describes her music as her “weird, dark, and twisted” way of expressing herself. Following a highly buzzed-about debut set at Coachella, BIBI sat down with Consequence to reflect on this moment in her career — a moment that only seems to be setting her up for more adventures. BIBI was part of the 88rising Head In the Clouds stage at Coachella. In reflecting on her time at Coachella Valley, two things prominently stand out: the desert dust, and getting to spend time with her fellow 88rising artists. “It was really overwhelming,” she says of her time at the festival, recalling the sheer size...
Rising K-pop group aespa played their first US live show on Saturday night, and the setting, of all places, was the main stage at Coachella. The group’s five-song set began with the live debut of “ænergy,” followed by “Black Mamba,” “Savage”, and an English language version of a new, unreleased song called “Life’s Too Short.” Then then closed their set by performing “Next Level.” Replay the full performance below. Despite forming in the midst of a pandemic, aespa, one of our 2022 Rising Artists to Watch, have enjoyed some pretty mind-blowing success. The four-piece released their first EP, Savage, in September, and its title track entered at No. 20 on the Billboard 200 — the highest K-pop girl group debut on the U.S. charts. Now, the quartet has become the third K-pop act in history to per...
Billie Eilish surprised the Coachella faithful by bringing out Paramore’s Hayley Williams during her Saturday night headlining set. “Oh, look! An empty seat. Thanks for sharing this with me – this is sick!” Advertisement Related Video Accompanied by Eilish’s brother Finneas on acoustic guitar, the pair performed Paramore’s classic song “Misery Business.” In between verses, Williams exclaimed, “We sound so good!” “Oh my fucking god,” Eilish said following their performance. “Absolutely what on Earth could be cooler than that? I’m dead serious.” Later in the evening, Williams returned to the stage to join Eilish for “Happier Than Ev...

Ed. Note: Head here to find our complete coverage of Coachella 2022. If you aren’t familiar with Josh Freese’s prolific career, ask the following question: What do Sting, DEVO, The Offspring, The Vandals, Nine Inch Nails, 100 gecs, and Danny Elfman have in common? They’ve all recorded, written, or toured with Josh Freese behind the drum kit at some point in their lengthy careers. If “drummer for the stars” is any metric of Freese’s success, then he’s one of the most successful drummers of all time. Last weekend at Coachella, Freese had quite the engagement on Saturday — performing with hyperpop icons 100 gecs around 6:00 p.m., and then again with composer and frontman Danny Elfman at 9:00 p.m. Such a hectic performance schedule is nothing new for Freese, who proudly takes on as m...
This past Easter Sunday, many people celebrated a different kind of resurrection. During her set at Coachella, Doja Cat — herself a quasi-religious figure, as the patron saint of hot girls who are visibly stoned in public — announced that Taco Bell would be bringing the Mexican Pizza back from the dead. “I brought back the Mexican Pizza by the way,” she howled during the performance, before laughing like a supervillain who had just pushed the big red button. The item returns May 19th, nearly one month after April 20th, which many people unofficially celebrate as Taco Bell Day. The Mexican Pizza was first rolled out under a different name in 1985. Since then it’s become beloved by fast-food fans for presenting a slightly different twist on the same seven ingredients that are in everything T...
Danny Elfman took the stage at Coachella on Saturday for a festival set unlike any other. The rare appearance by the legendary composer — which he introduced as a “strange little show” for the crowd — included a plethora of songs from films he’s scored, as he led a full orchestra through highlights from Edward Scissorhands (“Ice Dance/The Grand Finale”) and 1989’s Batman to a medley from The Nightmare Before Christmas (“Jack’s Lament/This is Halloween/What’s This?”) and a rocking version of The Simpsons theme song — by which point he was shirtless. Elfman also dusted off a number of Oingo Boingo tracks, including “Insects,” “Nothing to Fear (But Fear Itself),” “Only a Lad,” “Dead Man’s Party,” and closer “Who Do You Want to Be.” Related Video Joining on stage was an impressive backing...
Billie Eilish’s Saturday night headlining performance at Coachella included a surprise appearance from Damon Albarn, who joined the young pop singer to perform Gorillaz’s classic “Feel Good Inc.” Albarn initially joined Eilish on stage to lend vocals to “Getting Older,” from Eilish’s sophomore album, Happier Than Ever. The two, along with De La Soul’s Posdnuos, then launched into a rousing version of “Feel Good Inc.” “[Damon] changed my life in a lot of ways, and changed my view of what music and art and creation could be,” Eilish told the crowd as she introduced Albarn. “My first favorite band ever was the Good, the Bad and the Queen when I was six years-old, and Blur changed the world, and Gorillaz changed the world, and this man is literally a genius, and that’s that.” Advertisement Rel...
Harry Styles made his Coachella debut with an 18-song performance that included new music and a surprise appearance from Shania Twain. Styles kicked off his Friday night headlining set with the live debut of “As It Was,” the smash lead single to his upcoming album, Harry’s House. Later in the set, he premiered two more tracks: “Boyfriends” and “Late Night Talking.” Another notable moment came when Styles brought out Shaina Twain to perform two of her beloved classics: “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” and “You’re Still the One.” Advertisement Related Video “Now I have to tell you, in the car with my mother as a child, this lady taught me to sing,” Styles told the crowd of Twain. “She also taught me that men are trash.” Then speaking to Twain directly, Styles said, “To you, for the memories you g...
Arcade Fire treated Coachella to a surprise hour-long set at the Mojave Tent on Friday. The 13-song early evening performance included several songs from the band’s upcoming album WE, including: “The Lightning I,” “The Lightning II,” “Age of Anxiety II (Rabbit Hole),” and “Unconditional I (Lookout Kid).” Arcade Fire re-started the latter song so that frontman Win Butler could recompose himself: “It’s been a hard couple fucking years,” Butler tearfully told the crowd. “We tell ourselves so much poison.” Elsewhere during their set, Butler dedicated the band’s performance of “The Suburbs” to the people of Ukraine. “Everyone in a punk rock band in the Ukraine right now,” he added. “I’m thinking about everybody who is dealing with the war right now.” Related Video Butler also shouted out C...
Phoebe Bridgers took the stage at Coachella for her debut performance at the festival. In addition to playing “Sidelines” — her new song for the upcoming series Conversations with Friends — the indie-folk artist invited R&B musician Arlo Parks to join her for renditions of “Graceland Too” and “I Know the End.” (Ed. Note: Did you know Bridgers and Parks are both former Consequence Artist of the Month recipients?) “Graceland Too” and “I Know the End” are both highlights from Bridgers’ most recent album, Punisher, and backing vocals are absolutely necessary to get them off the ground. Parks’ honeyed croon does the job perfectly, from the harmonies of “Graceland Too” to the unforgettable chants of “I Know the End.” Aside from the songs mentioned, Bridgers’ set also included her ...
