K-pop soloist BIBI could be described as a free spirit, but that feels a bit too reductive for an artist as ever-evolving as her. BIBI pulls from hip-hop, R&B, and pop sounds as she pleases, and describes her music as her “weird, dark, and twisted” way of expressing herself. Following a highly buzzed-about debut set at Coachella, BIBI sat down with Consequence to reflect on this moment in her career — a moment that only seems to be setting her up for more adventures. BIBI was part of the 88rising Head In the Clouds stage at Coachella. In reflecting on her time at Coachella Valley, two things prominently stand out: the desert dust, and getting to spend time with her fellow 88rising artists. “It was really overwhelming,” she says of her time at the festival, recalling the sheer size...
Lizzo stopped by Los Angeles’ 104.3 MYfm on Wednesday (April 27)– her 34th birthday — to talk about her upcoming tour plans, getting a rare standing ovation at Saturday Night Live, and, most crucially, the magical musical mind-meld that occurred at Coachella last weekend when she shared the stage with Harry Styles. Explore See latest videos, charts and news See latest videos, charts and news The singer said that she was on such a high after her SNL double-duty that the only thing she could do for an encore was hop up with Harry. “I was like, ‘I need this, give it to me Harry!’” she cackled about the only cure for her post-SNL adrenaline rush. “I appreciate him inviting me to the stage, like that was a joy,” she said of her first trip to the festival’s main stage. Toward the end of hi...
Norwegian indie pop star girl in red was nominated for seven awards at Norway’s prestigious Spelleman Awards, but a North American tour kept her from the ceremony. Instead, fellow pop wunderkind Billie Eilish met up with the artist while at Coachella to present her with the Spelleman Album of the Year award. In a video that aired during the ceremony, Eilish sits in girl in red’s tour bus at weekend two of Coachella, waiting patiently for her friend to come aboard. “I am about to surprise girl in red with the Spellemann Album Of The Year award,” she explains, before the artist, born Marie Ulven, enters the bus. “What the actual fuck?” Ulven exclaims. “That’s a Norwegian Grammy, you know?” Ulven asks incredulously. “I am aware,” Eilish says. The American singer then directs her Norwegian fri...
For a few minutes as Code Orange’s gear was being set up for a daytime gig on Coachella’s opening weekend, things were looking grim. The festival’s club-like Sonora tent was mostly empty, with scattered fans up front and rows of couches along the walls filled with reclining festival-goers recovering from the desert heat. It wasn’t an ideal scenario for one of the band’s usual wild, enraged performances. When the six players finally stepped onto the stage (to the ethereal, cerebral sounds of Bjork’s “Hunter”), they looked like they were ready for a fight. Dressed as commandos and garage-rockers, Code Orange quickly erupted with the single “Out for Blood,” all crushing riffs and industrial-strength rage. Singer Jami Morgan, sporting a motorcycle jacket and black shorts with the sides of his ...
It’s been exactly 585 Fridays since Rebecca Black released “Friday.” In that time, she’s gone from a 13-year-old with pop star dreams to one of the most eternal and viral internet sensations of all time to an electronic alt-pop singer capable of putting on one of the most over-the-top and ridiculous Coachella DJ sets in recent festival history. During her early Saturday evening “Rebecca Black & Friends” set at the Do LaB, Black introduced a wide variety of guests, including Big Freedia, bass phenom Blu DeTiger, and Slayyyter (with who she collaborated with last year) — while also busting out a stadium-style t-shirt cannon to fire into the crowd shirts reading things like “REBECCA BLACK REPLACED KANYE WEST AS THE COACHELLA 2022 HEADLINER” and “I LIKE REBECCA BLACK AND I CAN PROVE IT DUE...
Ed. Note: Head here to find our complete coverage of Coachella 2022. If you aren’t familiar with Josh Freese’s prolific career, ask the following question: What do Sting, DEVO, The Offspring, The Vandals, Nine Inch Nails, 100 gecs, and Danny Elfman have in common? They’ve all recorded, written, or toured with Josh Freese behind the drum kit at some point in their lengthy careers. If “drummer for the stars” is any metric of Freese’s success, then he’s one of the most successful drummers of all time. Last weekend at Coachella, Freese had quite the engagement on Saturday — performing with hyperpop icons 100 gecs around 6:00 p.m., and then again with composer and frontman Danny Elfman at 9:00 p.m. Such a hectic performance schedule is nothing new for Freese, who proudly takes on as m...
This weekend, Coachella came back for the first time since Joe Biden was just the former VP and no one could’ve told you what COVID stood for. The biggest music festival on the planet returned for the first time since April 2019, headlined by Harry Styles, Billie Eilish, and The Weeknd x Swedish House Mafia (after Kanye fell through). As per usual, it was the singular hub of music, American culture, capitalism and pretty much everything else for three days in the California desert. Full of surprise guests, the hottest trends, and both expected and unexpected hijinks of every variety, SPIN was out in full force throughout the festival’s first weekend, experiencing all of the highs and lows firsthand so you don’t have to. Here’s The Best, The Mess & The Rest of everything to do...
Attention good readers of SPIN and/or fans of Coachella, it is I, the handler of the world-famous The Cup. If you’re not familiar with my celebrity clientele, I urge you to read the exclusive interview that I allowed SPIN to conduct with The Cup last week. It is even moderated by The Cup’s original creator, Chris Farren. I am writing this intro on behalf of The Cup, who is entirely too exhausted to be bothered for such activities right now. After all, he has just completed his very first full weekend of Coachella (at a mere three months old, no less). The Cup attended parties, catered to some of his adoring fans (including several valuable influencers and important artists), formed both romantic and strategic alliances, and provided the finest coverage you will read anywhere...
For the first day of Coachella’s grand return, after taking 2020-2021 off due to the pandemic, the festival and its artists were eager to impress. From the surprise addition of Arcade Fire (the band performed at sundown at the tented Mojave stage) to the various guest appearances — Anitta enlisted Snoop Dogg to introduce her history-making set (as well as Saweetie and Diplo later on), Phoebe Bridgers welcomed Arlo Parks, Daniel Caesar invited a shirtless Justin Bieber on stage to perform “Peaches” and headliner Harry Styles shocked the audience by bringing Shania Twain out for two of her biggest hits — day one made sure to keep fans on their toes, always guessing what could come next. Despite any hiccups earlier in the day (major parking delays stalled many, w...
Harry Styles had of the most anticipated sets on Coachella’s first day. After starting off his set with a slew of ballads, he kicked up the tempo and even brought out Shania Twain. The two performed debatably Twain’s biggest hits “Man, I Feel Like a Woman” and “You’re Still the One.” In between songs, Twain said she was “starstruck” by Styles and he said she’s the woman who taught him to sing. This isn’t the first time that Styles has covered Twain. He previously performed “You’re Still the One” with Kacey Musgraves at a show in New York City in 2018. Coachella has quickly tapped a pair of new headliners to replace last-minute scratch Kanye West. On Wednesday (April 6), organizers of this year’s event — which will unfold on the weekends of April 15-17 and April 22-24 — announced that The Weeknd and Swedish House Mafia will close things down in the Sunday slots.
