RB Leipzig boss: Liverpool players knew they were lucky

RB Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann dismissed Liverpool’s performance for last night’s victory over the Germans. Liverpool took full advantage of errors in Leipzig’s defence to go ahead through a quick-fire double from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane in the second half. The away win at Budapest’s Puskas Arena puts the Reds in control of the Champions League last-16 tie, but Leipzig boss Nagelsmann was not convinced his side were second-best. “When you win, you’re always right,” he said. “We earned a lot of respect in the 90 minutes. “And what I noticed when I left the field, the Liverpool players did not use the words “deserved victory”. “We were definitely not worse and certainly not by two goals.” Get more stories like this on Twitter You Deserve to Make Money Even When you are looking for D...

Barcelona boss admits that comeback against PSG seems unlikely

After yet another humbling defeat in the Champions League for Barcelona, coach Ronald Koeman does not seem too optimistic about his side’s progression into the next round of the competition. The Dutchman was disappointed in the team’s performance, which seemed to lack a cutting edge all across the pitch. There are plenty of questions about Koeman’s team selection however, and he certainly shares the blame for this defeat. Even so, the Blaugrana were extremely lethargic and did not show anywhere near their best football. In the post-match press conference, the manager summed up their miserable outing and evaluated their chances of progression to the next round. On the result and performance: “The result reflects the game. In the second half, they have been superior. They have been very effe...

Ex-Eagles boss faults Desire Oparanozie’s exclusion from Falcons squad

Former Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh has berated the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for excluding Super Falcons captain, Desire Oparanozie, from the list of players that will be representing Nigeria at the Turkish Women’s Cup. Recall that on Thursday, the NFF released a 23-man list and shut the door on the team’s dependable striker Oparanozie on the ground that she has not been playing since a sit-in protest over unpaid bonuses and allowances at the 2019 World Cup. In his words, NFF’s spokesman, Demola Olajire said: “Oparanozie is still part of the team’s plans, and her non-inclusion has nothing to do with that protest in France because she was not the only one involved,” Olajire told BBC. “Selection of players is predominantly the prerogative of the coaches and not the NFF. “She re...

Diego Simeone’s consistency at Atletico Madrid has been rewarded. The International Federation of Football and History Stats (IFFHS) have put the Argentine ahead of managers like Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp. This will be talked about for a while. The IFFHS have voted Cholo Simeone as the best coach of the latest decade (2011-20). Jose Mourinho approves Christian Eriksen’s return to Tottenham

Christian Eriksen could see his time at Tottenham end this January. Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho has approved the Dane’s return to North London. Christian Eriksen’s return to Tottenham seems close. In a deal which could also see Dele Alli go to PSG and Leandro Paredes move from PSG to Inter, the Dane would leave Inter. He has failed to settle there. Another reason for his return is that Tottenham coach Jose Mourinho has given his approval for Eriksen to return to Spurs, ‘Sky Sport’ reports. Eriksen left Spurs for Inter Milan, but the midfielder has struggled to perform under Antonio Conte. As he is struggling to get opportunities at Inter, Eriksen is keen for a return to Tottenham. Victor Osimhen faces Napoli sanctions for breaching coronavirus rules in Nigeria

Napoli coach Gennaro Gattuso said Sunday he felt foolish for giving Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen permission to travel home for Christmas with the forward testing positive for coronavirus on his return. Osimhen faces club sanctions after images of him partying without wearing a mask were shared on social media. But Gattuso said he also felt embarrassed for giving the 22-year-old permission to return to Africa. “The responsibility of sending him to Nigeria was also mine. It’s embarrassing for the two of us,” Gattuso said after Sunday’s 4-1 Serie A win over Cagliari. Osimhen apologised earlier on Sunday. “I am sorry for what happened. I made a mistake going to Nigeria right now,” the forward said in an Instagram post. “I made a mistake going to a surprise party without understanding the gr...

Kieran Tierney hopeful victory over Chelsea a turning point for Arsenal

Kieran Tierney is hopeful Arsenal’s 3-1 win over Chelsea can be a springboard to climbing the table. The Gunners came into the game on the back of a winless run in the league dating back to the start of November. Coach Mikel Arteta was forced into a reshuffle due to illness and a coronavirus scare , and the changes paid off for the Spanish coach as his side looked far more hungry than Chelsea. Alexandre Lacazette’s penalty following a foul by Reece James on Tierney set them on their way on 34 minutes. A brilliant free kick from Granit Xhaka on the stroke of half-time doubled the advantage, and Bukayo Saka’s cross-cum-shot over Edouard Mendy secured the three points despite Tammy Abraham netting a late goal for Chelsea. The win does little for Arsenal’s position in the table, as they only m...

Jurgen Klopp: Mo Salah is happy at Liverpool

Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp moved to dismiss speculation over Egypt forward Mohamed Salah’s future saying on Thursday he is happy at the Premier League champions. The 28-year-old gave an interview in Spain last week in which he said Barcelona and Real Madrid were top clubs and “who knows what will happen in the future”. This led to speculation over whether he was seeking a new longer-term contract beyond 2023 or he was upset Trent Alexander-Arnold had been given the captain’s armband for the Champions League group match with Midtjylland. “We do not speak about deals — well, not with you (the media). Why should we start now?” said Klopp at his press conference ahead of Sunday’s game with struggling West Brom. “Mo is in a good mood, always a good moment. He is in really good shape and that ...

Tottenham boss ‘angry’ with Dele Alli for creating ‘problems for his own team’

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has hit out at Dele Alli, accusing the midfielder of creating “problems for his own team” in his side’s 3-1 win over Stoke in the Carabao Cup. Alli was handed a rare start at Stoke on Wednesday and looked dangerous on occasions in attack, seeing a goal-bound strike saved by Andy Lonergan in the first half. However, he was at fault for Stoke’s goal when a flick gifted possession to the home side – and it was an action that angered his coach. “For me a player who plays in that position is a player that has to link and create and not create problems for his own team,” Mourinho said in his post-match press conference. “They got us on the counterattack, so yes I was angry. “First half we were solid. They didn’t touch the ball, have a shot, have a corner. Instead of ...
