What So Not Taps EVAN GIIA for Triumphant Single, “Messin’ Me Up”

“Alexa, play songs I should sing from a mountain top,” wrote Australian producer What So Not this week on EVAN GIIA‘s Instagram. The artists’ new collaboration, “Messin’ Me Up,” certainly fits the bill. Released October 28th via Sweat It Out and Counter Records, and written with Martin Doherty of CHVRCHES, it features What So Not’s classic production style at its finest.  The song was first conceptualized in 2019, during the devastating Australian bushfires. Through that lens, “Messin’ Me Up” tells a tale of perseverance and self-reflection via smooth layers of bass, lofty synths and epic chants. Paired with saturated drums and GIIA’s commanding tone, it’s pressure-packed with an additional message a...

CHVRCHES Reboot

Lauren Mayberry was recently stuck in traffic, as is often the case in Los Angeles. With time on her hands, she decided to listen to a playlist of “New Alternative Music” that an algorithm had recommended for her. Zooming from her Los Angeles home, Mayberry is wearing a red and white ringer t-shirt of fellow British romantics Wolf Alice. Alternative music is very much her thing, and for a while, her band CHVRCHES was one of the biggest in that world. But after spending some time safely immersed in the comforting sounds of the dreaded algorithm, she’s not sure where her band stands anymore — or what alternative music even is now. “After about 18 songs, we had come on [the playlist],” she says. “The style of my vocals is so fucking different. I sound like I’m screaming and shouting.” Feeling...

CHVRCHES Trade Remixes With Legendary Horror Film Composer John Carpenter

As August continues on, many artists have begun to prepare for the return of fall and, more specifically, Halloween festivities. None more so than CHVRCHES, who recently traded remixes with one of horror’s most iconic figures, John Carpenter, the director of legendary films such as Halloween and The Thing. In addition to directing some of the most influential horror movies of all-time, Carpenter is also widely regarded as one of the most impactful composers in the genre and has scored many of his own classics. Together, CHVRCHES and Carpenter created their own spins of one track from each of their respective catalogs. CHVRCHES decided to enter the realm of terrors and give Carpenter’s “Turning The Bones” a retrofuturistic spin. While no vocals are pre...

CHVRCHES Team With The Cure’s Robert Smith on ‘How Not to Drown’

Scottish indie pop outfit CHVRCHES and The Cure’s Robert Smith have teamed up for “How Not to Drown,” which also happens to be the first song off the band’s upcoming fourth studio album, Screen Violence. The album will be released on Aug. 27 on Glassnote Records. The tune is the second to be released from the collection, joining “He Said She Said.” Check it out below. [embedded content] Screen Violence was recorded remotely during the lockdown and was self-produced and mixed by CHVRCHES, something they were able to pull off during video calls and audio sharing programs. It would be interesting to hear how those went, but judging from what the group has said, it seems all went a-OK. “I think for me it was helpful to go into the process with the idea that I could write something es...
