There are no ‘death zones’ on these non-technical mountain climbs but they offer plenty of challenges for mere mortals like me As a climber, I have completed several indoor climbing and winter mountaineering courses but my technical climbing skills still leave a lot to be desired. I have mastered basic rope, ice axe and crampon skills but don’t practise them as often as I’d like. All too often I only find time for some wilderness backpacking in Europe or low-altitude scrambling in the UK. Regardless, I still have high hopes of climbing the seven summits (three down, four to go). I’m aware that I’ll never be a Reinhold Messner or Chris Bonington (I’ll settle for reading their books instead) but I still long to pitch myself against tall mountains with imposing names....

From eastern Greenland to northern Alaska, we explore some of the most remote places on Earth Whether it’s astronomical distances, inhospitable climates or extreme terrains that define these remote and hostile lands, there’s one thing they all have in common: they are on my bucket list. That and the fact that people live there. It’s highly unlikely I’ll actually make it to many of these far-flung realms – I certainly didn’t get to Ittoqqortoormiit on my 2019 trip to Greenland – but I salute the hardcore residents who carve out an existence in the most remote places and communities on Earth. 1. Ittoqqortoormiit, Greenland Ittoqqortoormiit is located on Liverpool Land, a peninsula in eastern Greenland and one of the most remote towns in the country. It was first inhabited in 1925 b...
The seven second summits are considered to be a much harder mountaineering challenge than the more popular seven summits Previously, I’ve written about my dream of climbing the seven summits and laid out a realistic if not deeply challenging and expensive program of how to achieve that goal. This week I look at the seven second summits; the second-highest mountains on each continent. The highest summits are a dream of mine, but I draw the line at the second-highest – they’re simply too scary for an amateur enthusiast like me! Introducing the seven second summits Alpinism author Jon Krakauer wrote in Into Thin Air (one of my favourite mountaineering books) that it would be a bigger challenge to climb the second-highest peak of each continent instead of the highest. An ob...
The knockout stages of the Copa America are underway, and they’ve begun with a bang. The first game of the evening came in Goiania, as Peru faced Paraguay. Then it was the big one, with holders and favourites Brazil coming up against 2015 and 2016 champions Chile. Here is how the games went. Peru 3-3 Paraguay (Peru win on penalties) Lapadula got himself a brace The first knockout tie of the competition brought us the highest scoring game, with Peru and Paraguay playing out an absolute cracker. Paraguay took the lead early on when captain Gustavo Gomez bundled in from a corner. But this lead lasted fewer than ten minutes, as Gianluca Lapadula tapped home an equaliser from Andre Carrillo’s cross. Things got a whole lot trickier for Paraguay in the lead up to half time. Lapadula notched his s...
The Copa America group stages have ended, and we now know our line-up for the knockout rounds. This is where things get incredibly interesting. One poor game, and it’s all over. It’s all about the result. Ahead of the quarter-finals, here are our predictions for the last eight ties. Peru vs Paraguay Can Peru get past Paraguay? Peru surpassed expectations in the group stages. Aside from one 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Brazil, they enjoyed a strong showing, finishing in second place. Paraguay also gave a good account of themselves in their group. They managed to pull off a surprise win against Chile and suffered narrow defeats to Argentina and Uruguay. They finished in third place. It’s a difficult one to call. Both sides have fairly similar records, scoring five in their four group outing...
The Copa America 2021 returns to action on Friday night as Chile and Paraguay lock horns at the Estadio Nacional de Brasilia. Seeking their first continental success since 2016, Chile have already sealed a place in the knock-outs after avoiding defeat in their opening three Group A matches. Meanwhile, Paraguay could join the Chileans and Argentina in the quarter-finals with a win here. Chile Preview Despite a paltry goalscoring return of three goals from as many Copa America 2021 matches, the Chileans have qualified for the quarter-finals with a game to spare. Identical 1-1 draws with Argentina and Uruguay accompanied by a narrow 1-0 win over Bolivia have been sufficient for Chile to reach the Copa America knockout stage for the sixth time in a row. Martin Lasarte’s men have found the net ...
Lionel Messi earned a record-equalling 147th cap for Argentina as they progressed to the Copa America quarter-finals with victory over Paraguay. Papu Gomez scored the decisive goal early on, meeting a pass from Angel Di Maria before producing a fine finish. Messi, 34, equalled Javier Mascherano’s appearance record for the national team in the hard-fought win in Brasilia. Argentina top Group A ahead of Chile, who drew 1-1 with Uruguay to also advance to the knockout stage. The hastily-rearranged tournament in Brazil, which was moved from Argentina just two weeks before it was scheduled to start because of a surge in Covid-19 cases in the country, is Messi’s latest chance to win silverware with the senior team. The six-time Ballon d’Or winner was typically influential, playing a part in the ...
It was a star-studded night of Copa America action, with some of the biggest names in the tournament lining up for their countries in Group A. Lionel Messi made history as he appeared for his side for a record-equalling 147th time, alongside the likes of Sergio Aguero and Angel Di Maria. Meanwhile, Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani were out on the pitch for Uruguay’s second group stage game against Chile. Here is how things unfolded. Uruguay 1-1 Chile Vargas and Brereton combined for the opener Chile went into the game top of the group, having accumulated four points from their opening two games. Uruguay, on the other hand, were looking to bounce back after their defeat against Argentina in game one. Ben Brereton continued his promising start to life as a Chile international, combining with E...
