Delta governor swears in three judges, says judiciary autonomy bill signed into law

Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta on Friday, swore in three new Customary Court of Appeal Judges for the state. The governor, who performed the function in Asaba, said that the bill for autonomy of the judiciary in the state had been signed into law. He charged the new customary court of appeal judges to ensure speedy dispensation of justice at all times. The new judges are,, Justices, Dele Okafor, Grace Abanre and Jessica Gberevbie. Okowa while congratulating the judges, said their appointments were based on their personal integrity and years of experience. Kano chief judge appoints Abdullahi Ado-Bayero as acting chief registrar

The Kano State Chief Judge, Justice Nura Sagir, has approved the appointment of Abdullahi Ado-Bayero, as the acting Chief Registrar of Kano High Court. Mr Baba Jibo-Ibrahim, the Public Relations Officer (PRO), Kano State Judiciary, made the disclosure in a statement issued to newsmen on Monday in Kano. Edo guber: APC petitions CJ over suit seeking to disqualify Pastor Ize-Iyamu

The All Progressives Congress, APC, has filed a petition against Justice Taiwo Taiwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja, accusing him of accelerating hearing of a suit that is seeking to disqualify its governorship candidate in Edo State, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu. The ruling party, in the petition it forwarded to the Chief Judge of the High Court, Justice John Tsoho, requested the immediate withdrawal of the suit from Justice Taiwo to enable another judge to take over and hear the matter. Three foreigners, six Nigerians arraigned over hijack of vessel

The Federal Government on Thursday arraigned three foreign nationals and six Nigerians for their alleged roles in the hijack of Equatorial Guinean Vessel, MV Elobey VI. The suspects and employees of Pilgrim Africa Limited were arrested by the Nigerian Navy in Port Harcourt following allegations that they conspired and paid 200,000 dollars to a gang of pirates who abducted three sailors. They were accused of facilitating to pay the ransom to the pirates for the release of two Moroccan nationals, Abaamrane Hamid and Chalabi Abdelaziz, and an Equatorial Guinean, Santos Ndong. The defendants were also accused of conveying the hostages to Calabar, Cross River, for onward hand over to the Equatorial Guinean Consul after payment was confirmed by the pirates. Federal high court chief judge goes on self-isolation

The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court (FHC), John Tsoho, has gone on self-isolation following a confirmed case of COVID-19. Justice Tsoho, in a statement by acting Information Officer of FHC, Catherine Oby Nwandu, on Friday, also ordered some key staff in his office to do same, pending the results of screening tests conducted on him, members of his immediate family and close aides. Oyo judiciary releases names of vacation judges

As the Oyo State judiciary commences its annual vacation, on Wednesday, based on the provisions of the High Court (Civil Procedure) Rules 2010 and other enabling laws, the placement of area of operations for vacation judges has been released for judges that have shown an intention to work during the vacation so that there won’t be a vacuum for time-bound cases. AGF Malami: Inmates on death row may get life

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Abubakar Malami (SAN), said on Tuesday that the Federal Government was planning a process of commuting the death penalty of condemned inmates with over 10 years on death row to life imprisonment. Malami who said this in Abuja at a press briefing on the achievements of the Presidential Committee on Correctional Service Reform and Decongestion, also said inmates awaiting trial for upwards of five years might be released. Nigerian government frees 7,813 inmates in 18 states, FCT

The Federal Government, on Tuesday, said it has released a total of 7, 813 inmates from various Correctional Centers since the outbreak of Coronavirus in the country. The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, SAN, who made the disclosure at a press conference in Abuja, said FG took the decision so as to curb the spread of the virus among inmates. Malami said the Federal Executive Council had earlier in 2017, passed a resolution that directed the Federal Ministry of Justice to put in place measures to fast track the decongestion of Correctional Centres nationwide. Yobe governor mourns deceased chief judge

Yobe State governor, Mai Mala Buni, has expressed deep shock over the death of the State Chief Judge, Justice Garba Nabaruma who died yesterday at the National Hospital, Abuja. The governor described the death of the late Chief Judge as a huge loss to the family, the judiciary, the state and the country. Buni said: “He was a humble gentleman and a consummate professional who was known for fairness and justice. EFCC: Lockdown won’t abort cases against ex-first lady, former governors, others

The lockdown arising from coronavirus appears to have slowed down the fight against corrupt practices in the country for close to six weeks. Meanwhile, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, says there is no cause for alarm as it will ensure that none of its ongoing investigations and cases in court will be aborted. The Commission is certain that as the federal and state governments begin to reopen the economy, it will ramp up legal actions to bring the suspects of financial crimes to account for their actions. “These suspects will unfailingly have their days in court,” EFCC Acting Chairman, Ibrahim Magu, declared. Court convicts 717 for lockdown violation in Kano

The Kano mobile courts have convicted 717 persons for violating the subsisting lockdown order in the state in the last 4 days. Kano has 11 mobile courts that were inaugurated by Kano Chief Judge, Justice Nura Sagir to sit in various parts of the state to enforce the lock down order recently. Baba Jibo Ibrahim, Spokesman, Kano State judiciary, told newsmen in Kano that from Sunday 3 May to Wednesday 6 May 2020, the 717 offenders were arraigned and convicted for violating the lock order, disclosing that there were those sentenced to rendering community services, payment od fines and those who received strokes of cane as punishment.
