One of South Africa’s largest telecoms, Cell C, made a loss of nearly $150-million between 1 June 2021 and 31 May 2022, according to a report from Blue Label Telecoms, which bought a 45% stake in the company in 2017. The analysis only takes into account top mobile operators in the country, ones which account for 3% or more of total test samples in the market in Q4 2021 – smaller providers are not tested, and thus are not included in the rankings. The report is based on results recorded between 1 July 2021 and 30 September 2021. The download speed (60%), upload speed (20%), and latency (20%) are used to calculate a Network Quality Score. The telco revealed that total revenue was down by 8% to R13.8-billion (2019: R15.1-billion), with the largest part of the revenue contribution from its prepaid base at R6.2-billion (2019: R6.9-billion).
