Cartoon Network Studios Swallowed by Warner Bros. Animation After Layoffs
Warner Bros. Television Group cut 26% of its workforce on Tuesday, October 11th as part of its parent company’s continued cost-cutting measures. Among the hardest-hit divisions was the animation department, which will consolidate Warner Bros. Animation (WBA) and Cartoon Network Studios (CNS) as part of a “strategic realignment.” “We are implementing a new streamlined structure in which the development and main production teams will now work across both Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios,” chairman Channing Dungey wrote in a company-wide memo (via Deadline). Watch out Archie, The Powerpuff Girls are making the live-action leap. According to Variety, The CW has ordered a pilot of the much-hyped adaptation from writers and executive producers Heather Regnier and Diablo Cody. Based on the Cartoon Network series by Craig McCracken, the new series will shift away from and kids and instead follow the titular twentysomethings who are a little more than peeved that they’ve spent their entire childhoods fighting crime. That logline just screams The CW, but also of Cody, whose writing in Juno, Jennifer’s Body, and the incredible Young Adult speaks to the kind of cynical edge this reimagining will no doubt require. The beloved Looney Tunes spin-off has been revived with a two-season, straight-to-series order of Tiny Toons Looniversity. The new cartoon is set to air on both Cartoon Network and HBO Max, though exactly how WarnerMedia plans to roll out the episodes across the platforms isn’t yet clear. What is known, however, is that Steven Spielberg is back to produce through his Amblin Television. Thundercat Contributes New Song to ThunderCats TV Series: Stream
Who better to write a new song for the ThunderCats reboot than the musician named Thundercat. The funk and jazz maestro born Stephen Burner has contributed a new song called “Grune’s Tune” to Cartoon Network’s ThunderCats Roar. As Pitchfork points out, Burner’s song is about a villainous anthropomorphic saber-toothed tiger named Grune the Destroyer, of which he also voices in the series. During a Comic-Con@Home panel on Thursday, Burner spoke about his life-long fascination with ThunderCats and revealed his musical moniker came about because he frequently wore a ThunderCats T-Shirt in the studio, leading Erykah Badu to refer to him as “Thundercat”.
