It’s all happening! The musical adaptation of Almost Famous is headed for the bright lights of Broadway. Based on the 2000 film of the same name, the production subtly shared the news on social media, where it updated its Twitter profile to read, “It’s all happening…Broadway 2022 #AlmostFamous.” The book and lyrics for the show were written by Cameron Crowe, who based the movie on his experiences as a teenage writer for Rolling Stone in the 1970s. Starring Billy Crudup, Patrick Fugit, and Kate Hudson, the film tells the story of 15-year-old William Miller as he follows fictional rock band Stillwater and attempts to land his very first cover story. Frances McDormand, Jason Lee, Zoey Zeschanel, Anna Paquin, and Philip Seymour Hoffman rounded out the cast. Advertisement Related Video Upon its...
This article originally appeared in the September 1992 issue of SPIN. In honor of Singles hitting theaters on this date in 1992, we’re republishing it here. Phoebe Cates fellating a carrot. Judge Reinhold beating off in the can. John Cusack lovelorn outside lone Skye’s window holding aloft a boom box blaring Peter Gabriel. Details such as these give director Cameron Crowe’s characters lifespans that linger on long past the closing credits. But Crowe’s most-celebrated contribution to the culture remains Fast Times at Ridgemont High’s stumbling, mumbling über-stoner, Jeff Spicoli, whose frazzled spirit was almost supernaturally caught by Sean Penn. The director has worked with a high caliber of acting talent ever since. Constructed as Love, American Style—type vignettes chronicling...

“What can I interest you in here?” Cameron Crowe is rummaging through an upstairs nook in his Los Angeles-area home that he affectionately calls “The Vinyl Room.” As one would expect from a longstanding music obsessive whose production company is Vinyl Films, the space is stacked wall-to-wall with old-school albums arranged alphabetically. Per request, he pulls out his seven-inch copy of Duran Duran’s “Is There Something You Should Know?” single along with his 1980s-era Madonna collection — which, he boasts, is located next to a Martika project. Then he fishes out Marvin Gaye’s seminal 1971 What’s Going On. The Motown great personally inscribed it for him. The impressive Zoom scene is nothing if not closure on the current state of William Miller’s record collection more than a ...

Song of the Week breaks down and talks about the song we just can’t get out of our head each week. Find these songs and more on our Spotify New Sounds playlist. There are no shortage of voices being raised across America today. It’s a sign of the times. Politicians, activists, artists, and everyday people look around and sense that something is terribly wrong — and, more troubling yet, that it’s only going to get worse without an immediate change in course. Presidential candidate Joe Biden, as you’ve probably heard him tell it, came out of political retirement to run for office after he saw neo-Nazis and white supremacist groups marching and stirring up violence in Charlottesville, Virginia. We’ve seen children-turned-activists like Emma Gonzalez and Greta Thunberg sound the warning alarm ...
Stevie Nicks has just released her first new solo song in nearly a decade. It’s called “Show Them The Way” and features Dave Grohl on drums. A music video helmed by renowned director Cameron Crowe is due out later today; in the meantime, you can stream the audio below. The Fleetwood Mac icon previously said she was inspired to write “Show Them The Way” when revisiting an old dream. One night right before the 2008 election, Nicks fell asleep and imagined herself in the company of a variety of notable politicians and activists, including Martin Luther King Jr., John F. Kennedy, John Lewis, and Bobby Kennedy. It’s stuck with her ever since, and she decided to tap into the sentiment of that imagined memory for the song, which was produced by Greg Kurstin (Sia, Adele, Beck)....
