Burning Man Asks for Donations to Ensure 2021 Return

This week, The Burning Man Project—Black Rock City’s prized mecca of international artists, free-thinkers, and other madcap creatives—launched a new microsite to collect financial donations.  It packs a somber but encouraging message. “Sadly we will not be gathering in the Black Rock Desert in 2020. Though this will result in an unprecedented revenue shortfall for Burning Man Project, we remain optimistic,” the site reads. “We are committed to maintaining the critical infrastructure we’ll need, after cuts to expenses and staffing, to produce Black Rock City 2021 and continuing our vital off-playa work in the year ahead. We can’t do this without your help.” Curious Josh The suggested donation amount is $475—the price of admission. To some, that number ...

Burning Man Organizers Invite Fans to Discussion About Its Sustainability Solutions

Back in May 2020, Burning Man announced Kindling, a virtual shared live experience platform with a mission to immerse fans into the event’s culture digitally in lieu of its cancelled 2020 iteration. “Since we can’t gather in person, Kindling is your space to explore live experiences being created by instigators in the BMan community & beyond,” said organizers in a tweet at the time. Kindling today invited the Burning Man community to one of those live experiences, a discussion called “Ecosystem Activation: ‘Year One Report – Sustainability Roadmap’.” The call, which will feature Burning Man staff and community members, is designed to inform participants about the implementation of the event’s “20...

Introducing The Fluffy Cloud, the UFO-Like 360° Immersive Stage That is Reinventing Live Performances

“Doing the same thing over and over is boring,” says Jorge Perdomo, creator of The Fluffy Cloud. No, The Fluffy Cloud isn’t the name of a fancy new weather app or a pillow you saw on Shark Tank. It is a futuristic art installation that doubles as a formidable concert stage, towering 30-feet high and flaunting a 60,000-watt circular sound system and a dazzling centrifuge of 33,000 polychromatic LEDs. The Fluffy Cloud is a structure like no other, and that’s the point—its goal, Perdomo says, is to disrupt the live entertainment industry by creating something that blurs the lines of art and music to offer a truly immersive experience. At its core, The Fluffy Cloud represents subversion through immersion. Inspired by his own experiences at conce...

Burning Man Project Launches Kindling, a Platform for Virtual Shared Live Experiences

Burning Man Project, a nonprofit that supports the global Burning Man community and produces the annual beloved Burning Man event in Black Rock City, today announced the launch of a new virtual shared live experience platform called Kindling. The goal of the new portal is to immerse fans into Burning Man culture via the virtual space through specially curated experiences. Its launch is a direct result of Burning Man’s tragic cancellation of its 2020 iteration due to the impact of COVID-19, which was announced back in April. At the time, Burning Man Project CEO Marian Goodell expressed optimism for the future and alluded to a looming virtual event, which is now coming into fruition with Kindling. “Since we can’t gather in person, Kindling is your s...
