Electronic Music Producers Make Their Mark On BTS’ New Album, “BE”

BTS promised a spectrum of new sounds on their latest effort, and they delivered. South Korean megastars BTS released their ninth studio album this week, BE, the group’s latest since their early 2020 album MAP OF THE SOUL: 7. In August, the group’s label and management company Big Hit Entertainment announced the septet planned to release BE in the fourth quarter of this year. At the time, the group perceived the date to be an ambitious target. Their plan was to become directly involved in every aspect of the album process unlike ever before, which, the group noted, led to uncertainties around the final release date. On the flip-side, an announcement from the group promised the end product would showcase a “richer musical spectrum experience.”   T...

BTS Faces Uproar In China Over Korean War Comments

“After 70 years, the world we are living in is much closer than before. Boundaries in many aspects are getting more blurred,” RM said. “As members of the global community, we should build a deeper understanding and solidarity to be happier together.” Chinese internet users and state media took RM’s comments as a slap at China, whose soldiers fought alongside North Korean forces during their failed attempt to annex South Korea in the 1950-53 war. They accused RM of ignoring the role played by China in the war, which Chinese Communist Party propaganda blames on the United States, instead of North Korean leader Kim Il Sung’s attack on South Korea. “Before, I thought some BTS songs were pretty good. Now, they seem to be covered in excrement,” said a commenter on the microblog service Sina Weib...

The seven members of the K-pop supergroup BTS are set to make millions when their label Big Hit Entertainment goes public in October. Demand for shares in Big Hit has hit record levels, driven in part by fans of the boy band, giving the music giant a valuation of $4.1 billion. Big Hit’s Oct. 15 IPO will be South Korea’s largest in three years. The IPO will make Big Hit founder and co-CEO Bang Si-hyuk, known widely as “Hitman” Bang, a billionaire. In August, Bang gave each BTS member shares in the company, which are currently valued at almost $8 million. As well as being home to RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook, Big Hit’s roster includes the five-member boy band TXT and singer Lee Hyun. Throughout “BTS Week,” the seven-piece will perform, chat and play games. Each night they’ll deliver a unique performance and take part in skits with Fallon and a virtual interview. It’s all part...
