Bridgerton Tries to Add Some Substance to Its Decadent Style in Season 2: Review

The Pitch: When it premiered in December 2020, Netflix’s Bridgerton provided plenty of steamy romance and escapism, both of which were in short supply as the world prepared to enter the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Season 1 of the lush period drama, adapted from Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton book series, followed Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) and Simon Basset (Regé-Jean Page), the reluctant Duke of Hastings, as they went from co-conspirators to marrieds, setting Regency-era London ablaze. Their exploits, and those of the rest of the ton, were chronicled by the acerbic (and anonymous) Lady Whistledown, whose influence at times rivaled that of the Queen (Golda Rosheuvel). The second season follows the tradition of Quinn’s books and shifts the focus to a different Bridgerton: this ti...

Joe Jonas Becomes a Bridgerton In New Tanqueray Commercial: Watch

Look out Lady Whistledown, there’s a new Bridgerton in town. On Wednesday (March 16), Joe Jonas transformed himself into the latest member of the aristocratic Netflix family in a charming ad for Tanqueray Gin. “Welcome to ‘How to T-Time Like a Bridgerton.’ I’m Joseph Jonas the First,” the pop star says in the clip as he strides down a grand staircase in a Regency-era tailcoat, cravat and modern-day sneakers. “I know what you might be thinking, I’m a Jonas, not a Bridgerton. While that might be true, the internet has been kind enough to point out that I do look like one. And I feel like I’m getting the hang of it.” Explore Explore Joe Jonas See latest videos, charts and news See latest videos, charts and news From there, the “Dancing Feet” singer gets a few lessons in how to be a proper nin...

Bridgerton Star Regé-Jean Page Not Returning for Season 2

Breakout Bridgerton star Regé-Jean Page will not be returning as the Duke of Hastings for Season 2 of Shonda Rhimes’ period drama. The announcement was made on the Netflix show’s Instagram page by the show’s fictional newsletter columnist Lady Whistledown. “Dear Readers, while all eyes turn to Lord Anthony Bridgerton’s quest to find a Viscountess, we bid adieu to Regé-Jean Page, who so triumphantly played the Duke of Hastings,” the announcement begins. “We’ll miss Simon’s presence onscreen, but he will always be a part of the Bridgerton family. Daphne will remain a devoted wife and sister, helping her brother navigate the upcoming social season and what it has to offer — more intrigue and romance than my readers may be able to bear.” The departure should come as no surprise to fans of...

Sumptuous Jacquard Floral Is the Regency-Inspired Spring Trend That’s About to Take Off

You might be familiar with Jacquard, a group of intricately decorated woven fabrics that feature embossed prints, particularly that of elaborate florals. Jacquard first became popular in Britain in the 1820s — the same Regency fashion era when Bridgerton takes place — and it’s currently making a comeback for spring 2021 thanks to our favourite fashion brands and Instagram’s style enthusiasts. For spring 2021, we saw decadent Jacquard prints at Simone Rocha, Erdem, Fendi, and JW Anderson. At Simone Rocha, the Regency-inspired print was used to add opulence to puff-sleeved mini and midi dresses. Erdem had a similar approach, using the woven fabric to add romance to khaki green puff-sleeved coats and co-ordinated sets, which take reference from Regency menswear innovator Beau Brum...

Bridgerton’s Phoebe Dynevor Stars in Self-Portrait’s Glorious Autumn 2021 Collection

London-based fashion brand Self-Portrait tapped one of our favourite onscreen debutantes to front the brand’s gorgeous autumn/winter 2021 collection — Bridgerton‘s Phoebe Dynevor. The brand’s new collection features more casual pieces for the first time, including bouclé separates, ribbed dresses, and fuzzy sets for lounging at home, mixed in with Self-Portrait’s signature lace midi dresses and evening wear. “I was delighted and honoured that Han [Chong, the brand’s creative director,] chose me to work with him and such a talented team on his latest collection,” said Dynevor in a press statement. “I first spotted one of his dresses on a photoshoot and it was an instant love affair. Han’s collections for Self-Portrait have always been an...

Netflix’s Bridgerton Reveals Uncomfortable Truths About Sex

While watching Bridgerton last week, I jokingly referred to the series as “the fancy British sex show” to friends on a text thread. Although that’s perhaps reductive, the description is fairly accurate: Netflix’s new Victorian drama is filled with sex, scandal, pearl clutching, and opulence. Yet, at the same time, it’s also a lot of fun, which is why I happened to binge most of the season in a day. (It was a welcome distraction during a stressful week.) However, there are deeper truths underneath Bridgerton’s addictive exterior. Sure, at first blush, it’s a Victorian romance with a Gossip Girl subplot, but the series cuts much deeper than that. At its core, Shondaland’s latest drama stealthily reveals the damaging lies and practices perpetuated by the patriarchy, particularly the struggle ...

Bridgerton’s Costume Designer Reveals How Dior and Chanel Inspired a Modern Regency Wardrobe

Bridgerton is a visual feast unlike any we’ve seen before. The decadent Netflix period drama created by Shondaland is based on the first book in the Bridgerton series of romance novels by Julia Quinn, The Duke and I. The costuming, much like the series itself, is a completely fresh take on what you would expect from the Regency era — filled with colour, texture, and scandal — and POPSUGAR spoke to costume designer Ellen Mirojnick about how she created a Regency wardrobe that we wish we could wear today. “I love Portia’s character so much because she’s somewhat of a cross between Elizabeth Taylor and Joan Collins in a Regency time that we’re making modern.” Mirojnick designed the gorgeous gowns on Bridgerton by layering modern fabrics and colorations over...
