Watch Bob Dylan, Joe Walsh, Smokey Robinson Sing Happy Birthday to Brian Wilson

“To me you’re the only great pop genius in the world,” said Elton John in the first of many touching video tributes to Brian Wilson in celebration of his 80th birthday. The BeeGees’ Barry Gibb echoed John’s remark, remembering the first time he heard the Beach Boys’ “I Get Around.” “Your insights into chord changes and harmony have always been overwhelming to me,” Gibb said. “I’d love to see you again in person one day.” Other messages were more musical. Smokey Robinson sang a quick happy birthday to his “brother.” The Eagles’ Joe Walsh serenaded him on electric guitar. As did Fleet Foxes. And at the very end, Bob Dylan also strummed him a happy birthday on acoustic guitar. Musicians and artists from all generations and genres thanked Wilson for the gift of his music, including Carole King...

Brian Wilson Sits At My Piano to Recreate Classic Hits

Beach Boys co-founder Brian Wilson has a new album on the way. Titled At My Piano, a collection of Beach Boys and Brian’s hits performed solo on his piano. The record is set to arrive November 19 via Decca. “We had an upright piano in our living room and from the time I was 12 years old I played it each and every day,” Wilson said in a statement. “I never had a lesson, I was completely self-taught. I can’t express how much the piano has played such an important part in my life. It has bought me comfort, joy and security. It has fuelled my creativity as well as my competitive nature. I play it when I’m happy or feeling sad. I love playing for people and I love playing alone when no one is listening. Honestly, the piano and the music I create on it has probably saved my life.” The musical ic...

Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road

Premiering this week at the Tribeca Film Festival, along comes another film about Brian Wilson. Is there more to be said about this cornerstone of modern American music? Indeed, Long Promised Road provides several more angles to further understand the journey Brian Wilson has taken. The film provides a wealth of encomia from well-respected musicians:  “The Beatles had George Martin,” observes Elton John. “But Brian did it himself.” “One of the greatest artists of all time,” asserts Don Was. “No greater world in rock and roll was created than that of the Beach Boys,” says Jersey Shore native Bruce Springsteen. “On the level of Schubert or Handel,” says Gustavo Dudamel of Pet Sounds. By age 22, Wilson had produced seven Top 10 hits, making The Beach Boys the most successful group in the...

The 35 Greatest Concerts of the Last 35 Years

We know, we know — the best concert of all-time is your friend’s obscure indie-punk band playing a sweaty neighborhood basement back in ‘94. We admit that one slipped through the cracks.  Maybe it’s a fool’s errand, but this list is our attempt to narrow down three and a half decades of worthy live music events — legendary festivals, headlining tours from major artists, one-off stage collaborations, multimedia spectacles — into an eclectic and satisfying blend. – Ryan Reed 35. So it’s heartening that Heilung’s debut l...

Brian Wilson, Jimmy Page, Dave Grohl, Mick Jagger and More Pay Tribute to ‘Architect of Rock and Roll’ Little Richard

Little Richard passed away Saturday at the age of 87. The rock ‘n’ roll pioneer’s son Danny Jones Penniman confirmed the news to Rolling Stone, adding that the cause of death was cancer. Little Richard (born Richard Wayne Penniman) released a number of hits in the mid-to-late-50s including classics “Tutti Frutti,” “Good Golly Miss Molly,” and “Long Tall Sally.” The pianist’s flamboyant stage presence changed the art of musical performance, and bands like The Beatles, Elvis Presley, and Creedence Clearwater Revival have cited him as an influence. Penniman was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986 — its inaugural year. Other rock ‘n’ roll icons, including Brian Wilson and Jimmy Page, paid tribute to Little Richard on Twitter. “I’m very sorry to hear about Lit...
