SPIN at SXSW: The Lemonheads Reignite Austin With It’s a Shame About Ray Performance

Not gonna lie: we kinda missed SXSW, traffic, lines, free-flowing human chaos and all. SPIN hosted a number of raging day shows throughout the years, but for SXSW’s return, we had to come back with a real-deal official showcase at Stubb’s. And who could be more official than The Lemonheads? Evan Dando and company ripped through their classic 1992 album, It’s a Shame About Ray, as the party’s marquee feature, and even if at least half of the audience hadn’t been born by the time they initially broke up, Dando’s youthful warble still filled Stubb’s vast gravely lawn. One could probably hear Dando and the rest of us “Raaaaaay” from the Capitol less than a mile from the venue. Nearly three decades later, the one-two punch of “Bit Part” and “Allison’s Starting to Happen” still goes for the punk...

Boulevards: Riding Through the Mud High on Funk

So in the summer of 2020, the North Carolinian soul-singer who goes by the name Boulevards, fired off a string of direct messages to artists he admired with his new music and an invitation to collaborate. “I felt like I was on the verge of something good,” Rashad says. “It took me records to get to this point.” The faith and persistence paid off when Blake Rhein, the guitarist of Durand Jones and the Indications, sent a DM in response, agreeing to produce his new record. Electric Cowboy: Born In Carolina Mud, was released via New West Records’ imprint Normaltow...

I’ve lived in Los Angeles and New York, but I keep coming back here. This is home. This is where I’ve learned the most.” Boulevards created the 12-track record with many prominent collaborators. Electric Cowboy was co-produced and has appearances by Blake Rhein of Durand Jones & the Indications and Colin Croom of Twin Peaks, and features Adrian Quesada of Black Pumas, Nikki Lane, Macie Stewart of OHMME, including Yola collaborators Ashley Wilcoxson and Leisa Hans on backing vocals. 36 Musicians Predict the 2021-22 NBA Season

If it feels like the previous NBA season just ended, well, it sort of did. The Milwaukee Bucks triumphed over the Phoenix Suns, capturing the franchise’s second title in mid-July, and here we are in mid-October with the league ready to tipoff again. Once again, we polled music’s biggest NBA fans to give their takes on how the upcoming season is going to unfold. Unlike last season (more like 2019), we asked for some general thoughts, musing and predictions. As you’ll see in a moment, there are a lot of Lakers and Sixers fans (and they seem pretty optimistic about their team’s chances this season). Here’s what our musician panel had to say about the 2021-22 NBA season. Mark LaneganLos Angeles Clippers They finally made it to the Western Conference finals, which I never thought would hap...
