Once again taking up the weight of one of the world’s most famous mustaches, Sacha Baron Cohen donned his Borat persona to roast Kanye West, Donald Trump, and the rising tide of global antisemitism at the 2022 Kennedy Center Honors. U2, George Clooney, Gladys Knight, Amy Grant, and Tania León were among the evening’s honorees. Cohen had been tapped to pay tribute to U2, or as Borat called them, “Me Too.” But his attention quickly turned to presidents past and present, as Deadline reports. “I am told the president of US today is here. Where are you Mr. Trump?” When the cameras panned to Joe Biden, he added, “You don’t look so good.” Advertisement Related Video “Where has your glorious big belly gone?” Borat continued. “And your pretty orange skin has become pale?“ He added, “...

Amazon Prime Video is treating subscribers to a bunch of previously unseen bonus footage from Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. It’s part of new special called Borat Supplemental Reportings Retrieved From Floor of Stable Containing Editing Machine, scheduled to premiere on May 25th. The special is broken into three parts: a “VHS cassette” containing material deemed “Sub-acceptable” by Kazakhstan Ministry of Censorship and Circumcision; a 40-minute reality show about Borat living in lockdown with two conspiracy theorists during the COVID-19 pandemic; and a series of documentary shorts in which Borat’s roommates have their theories ...
Very nice! Borat Subsequent Moviefilm won Best Motion Picture – Comedy at tonight’s Golden Globe Awards. Additionally, Borat himself, Sacha Baron Cohen, claimed the prize for Best Actor in a Comedy. Taking place 14 years after the events of the original Borat film, the world-famous Kazakh journalist returned to Yankeeland in 2020 in order to gift his daughter, Tutar, to then Vice Premiere Mikhael Pence. Along the way, Borat and Tutar are forced to navigate a deadly pandemic, QAnon conspiracy theorists, and Rudy Giuliani. In accepting the award for Best Comedy, Baron Cohen singled out the former New York City mayor. “I’ve got to say, this movie could not have been possible without my co-star, a fresh new talent who came from nowhere and turned out to be a comedy genius,”...
Every year, we say we’re not going to watch the Golden Globes. “They’re pay-for-play opportunists who trade awards for access,” we plea in the mirror. “Remember Pia Zadora?” And yet, just like Michael Corleone in The Godfather Part III, they pull us back in. Maybe it’s the pandemic insisting upon things to look forward to amidst the threat of impending doom. Or, more likely, we just love TV and the people who make it too much to not want to root for them to get recognition — no matter how dubious the award. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, an enigmatic collective of 93 non-American journalists who nonetheless live in LA, give out their trophies every year, and the picks are virtually impossible to guess. Sometimes, it’s recognition of the best work in film and TV that year. Other t...
Oscar’s comin’. The Academy has unveiled shortlists for nine categories at the upcoming 2021 Oscars, including Best Original Song. Already, there’s plenty of competition among those listed, including from — believe it or not — Kazakhstan’s most trusted journalist. Yes, “Wuhan Flu” from Amazon’s Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan is one of the 15 original songs that made the shortlist. The ridiculous singalong joins a tough assembly that includes heavy hitters like Janelle Monáe (“Turntables” from All In: The Fight for Democracy), Mary J. Blige (“See What You’ve Done” from Belly of the Beast), H.E.R. (“Fight For You” from Judas and the Black Messiah), and Leslie Odom, Jr. (“Speak Now” from One Night...
The saga of Borat Margaret Sagdiyev has come to a very nice end. In a new profile in Variety, Sacha Baron Cohen said he’s finished with his most famous creation, and that the fictional Kazakh journalist is now “locked away in the cupboard.” The character had been retired once before, after the release of the 2006 film Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. The satire of Borat is based in surprise. People thought they were talking to a second-rate journalist from a sparsely populated country, and so they didn’t mind sharing their racism, misogyny, and anti-Semitism. After the movie became a box office sensation, Cohen thought he’d lost the element of surprise. He began to change his mind in 2018. First, the rise of white nationali...
Sacha Baron Cohen spent the majority of 2020 working to expose the rampant wrongdoings of the GOP party. Now that their leader, Donald Trump, has lost the 2020 presidential election, the Borat comedian is getting ready to take down his next target: Facebook. When Joe Biden was declared the President-Elect of the United States on November 7th, Cohen took to Twitter to share his thoughts. He gleefully celebrated Trump’s loss and then posted a photo of him shaking hands with Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg in the White House. “One down, one to go,” tweeted Cohen. Today, Cohen shared a much longer statement about Zuckerberg and the ways in which he’s preventing a secure transfer of power from Trump to Biden. “This is a dangerous moment,” he tweeted. “Trump won’t concede. Facebook...
Borat Subsequent Moviefilm was full of villains, but babysitter Jeanise Jones emerged as a clear hero. Her sympathetic handling of Borat’s “daughter” (actress Maria Bakalova) earned her the adoration of fans but only $3,600 in payment. Those same fans responded by raising over $170,000 on her behalf, and now Borat himself Sacha Baron Cohen donated an additional $100,000 to Jones’ church. As The Los Angeles Times notes, the donation to the Ebenezer Baptist Church was initially made anonymously in Jones’ name. But the size made it conspicuous, and the Times has confirmed Cohen as the source. The money is earmarked for food, shelter, and other essential community needs, and will be distributed by the church at Jones’ discretion. Cohen has declined to comment. Although not bad by babysitt...
By and large, the job of Sacha Baron Cohen in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm is to dupe people into revealing how terrible they really are. Just ask Rudy Giuliani. But not everyone in the new film comes off as a villain; in fact, audiences loved 62-year-old babysitter Jeanise Jones so much that they’ve raised over $80,000 for her in a fundraiser set up by her pastor. Jones is featured in a segment where she serves as babysitter to Borat’s daughter, Tutar Sagdiyev (Bulgarian actress Maria Bakalova). Shocked by the sexist and misogynistic beliefs to which the supposedly teenage girl adheres, Jones does her best to lift the veil on the lies. In one scene, Jones reads Tutar her favorite story about a girl who got swallowed by her own “vagine” because she tried to touch herself. In another, she exp...
In a classic example of if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em, Kazakhstan has reversed course on its Borat stance. After years trying to distance itself from Sacha Baron Cohen’s satirical character, the country has decided to embrace his popularity by using his catchphrase “Very Nice!” as its new tourism slogan. The Kazakhstan tourism board has unveiled a new series of ads that show visitors exploring all the country has to offer. As they marvel at the natural landscapes, architectural wonders, and delicious foods, each individual declares a satisfied, “Very nice!” Ridiculous accent not included. “In COVID times, when tourism spending is on hold, it was good to see the country mentioned in the media,” the deputy chairman of Kazakhstan’s tourism board, Kairat Sadvakassov, told The New York Times....
“Creep” would be an appropriate word to describe Rudy Giuliani after witnessing his antics in the new Borat movie. However, when asked about his personal attorney’s actions in the film, Donald Trump said it was Sacha Baron Cohen who was the “creep.” Speaking to reporters on Friday, Trump recalled his own appearance on Cohen’s Da Ali G Show in 2003. “Years ago, you know, he tried to scam me,” And I was the only one who said ‘no way.’” “That’s a phony guy. And I don’t find him funny,” Trump continued. “To me, he was a creep.” On Saturday, Cohen responded to Trump directly. “Donald—I appreciate the free publicity for Borat! I admit, I don’t find you funny either. But yet the whole world laughs at you,” Cohen wrote on Twitter. “I’m always looking for people to play racist buffoons, ...
Borat may think Rudy Giuliani’s hotel encounter was just “innocent sexy-time between a consenting man and my 15-year-old daughter,” but the man behind the character has a much different take. In a rare appearance out of character, Sacha Baron Cohen spoke about the incident on Good Morning America on Friday morning. “If the president’s lawyer found what he did there to be appropriate behavior, then heaven knows what he’s done with other female journalists in hotel rooms,” Cohen remarked. “I just urge everyone to watch the movie… it is what it is, he did what he did. Make your own mind to us, but it was pretty clear to us.” In the scene, 24-year-old actress Maria Bakalova, playing the role of Borat’s 15-year-old daughter Tutar Sagdiyev, sits down for an interview with Giuliani in a New York ...
