Matt Skiba Responds to Tom DeLonge’s Open Letter: ‘Truly Happy’ for Blink-182

In case you somehow missed the memo: Blink-182 is back. The group brought back Tom DeLonge for the reunion of its classic lineup, including a forthcoming new album and worldwide tour through 2024. Though fans are elated, as seen in the surge of social media posts this past week, one person who has been quiet until now was Matt Skiba. The guitarist (also behind pop-punk act Alkaline Trio) had filled in for DeLonge for the past seven years after he decided to pursue his outside interests (UFOs) and other projects (Angels & Airwaves). On Friday, DeLonge shared an open letter to Skiba in which he expressed his gratitude for “keep[ing] the band alive and thriving in my absence,” and also admitted, “to be honest, the band would not even be here today if it were not for your ability to jump i...

Blink-182 Comes on Strong With New Single ‘Edging’

When Blink-182 announced its reunion with Tom DeLonge on Tuesday, the group also teased the Friday release of the first single from its upcoming album. That song, “Edging,” has now arrived. Blink-182’s first track with DeLonge in nearly a decade doesn’t include any overt dick jokes, secrets about aliens or blatant references to banging your parents, but it does feature some classically Blink lines like “I’m a punk rock kid, I came from hell with a curse / She tried to pray it away, so I fucked her in church.” [embedded content][embedded content] “Edging” is technically only Blink-182’s first new song since 2019’s Nine, but it’s the first with original guitarist DeLonge since 2012’s Dogs Eating Dogs EP and certainly a breath of fresh air for those who preferred the band’s classic ...

Blink-182’s 10 Most Underrated Songs

At long last, Tom DeLonge and Blink-182 are back together again. After months of rumblings, the guitarist reunited with Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker, and fans of the pop-punk pioneers couldn’t be happier. The band’s co-founding guitarist has been out of the lineup since 2015, replaced during that stretch by Alkaline Trio’s Matt Skiba. But now — after years of headline drama, rumors, and bassist Mark Hoppus’ cancer battle — the classic lineup is returning in 2023 for both a massive world tour and their first album since 2011. (Skiba, Hoppus, and drummer Travis Barker recorded two LPs together: 2016’s California and 2019’s Nine.) For all our excitement about the future, the reunion naturally brings a lot of nostalgia. Looking back, some of Blink’s best work has come from their deep cut...

Blink-182, Green Day to Headline When We Were Young 2023

The first When We Were Young festival takes place in Las Vegas in less than two weeks. The demand for the event, which features headliners Paramore, My Chemical Romance, Avril Lavigne, Jimmy Eat World and more, was so high that the promoters had to add a second weekend. Based on that success alone, next year’s lineup has been revealed, and if you’re a Blink-182 fan, that’s good news. The newly-reunited Blink and Green Day will headline the 2023 edition of When We Were Young on Oct. 21. Other artists confirmed on the lineup are 30 Seconds to Mars, the Offspring, Good Charlotte, 5 Seconds of Summer and All Time Low. Pierce the Veil, Gym Class Heroes, Michelle Branch, Thrice, Rise Against and a reunited Something Corporate will also feature. Just like this year’s event, When We Were Young wil...

blink-182 Reuniting With Classic Lineup for Tour, New Music

Finally confirming one of the worst-kept secrets in music, blink-182 is reuniting with its classic lineup of Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge and Travis Barker for the first time in nearly 10 years for a huge world tour and new music. The group’s single, “EDGING,” will be released Friday (Oct. 14), followed by a new album. The tour begins March 11 in Tijuana, Mexico, and has dates on the books through Feb. 26, 2024, in New Zealand. Tickets go on sale on Oct. 17 at blink-182’s website. Wallows, Turnstile, The Story So Far and Rise Against have been tapped as opening acts at various points. DeLonge split with Hoppus and Barker in 2015, and blink has been playing with Alkaline Trio singer Matt Skiba ever since. Hoppus also successfully battled cancer. 30 Signature Guitars for Modern Artists

For decades, having a signature guitar was reserved for classic rock legends — the Claptons, the Hendrixes, the Pages, the SRVs and EVHs. But that’s no longer the case. From pop-punk to heavy metal, alt-country to neo-soul, modern artists of all genres and backgrounds are getting signature guitars from companies big and small. Among the titans of the industry, that intentional shift came with a new generation being put into decision-making positions. “When I started, it was largely classic rock and very much a pantheonic Hall of Fame,” Fender’s Executive VP for Products Justin Norvell says of the early 2000s. “It was an end-of-an-iconic-career kind of thing. But it was my feeling that it should be something that people can use to reflect back upon themselves. A Telecaster can mean James Bu...

The 40 Best Emo Love Songs

While emo music might be most associated with sadness and heartbreak, those lovelorn artists couldn’t have written such songs without experiencing some serious romantic highs. Since it’s Valentine’s Day, we wanted to focus on the good parts of love more than the bad — although there’s still some unhappiness and resentment mixed in. (I mean, it is still emo after all.) SPIN’s writers spanned decades, waves and numerous albums looking for the top emo love songs, and now we’ve gathered them all here to save you the work. And yes, we know “emo” is just as broad a term as “love song” — you may also describe some of these acts as pop-punk or post-hardcore or even heart-on-sleeve indie-rock. But all of these bangers branch off the same family tree. From trailblazers like The Get Up Kids...

The Beat of a Different Drummer: 10 Albums Where a New Drummer Put a Spring in the Band’s Step

The drummer is the job in a rock band with the highest turnover rate — a cliché lampooned memorably in This is Spinal Tap. And if it takes a few albums for a group’s definitive lineup to click into place, the drummer is often the final piece of the puzzle to arrive. But it’s often that change behind the drum set that makes a good band great, thanks to the addition of faster, louder, or more complex rhythms. Sometimes a versatile percussionist can even expand the band’s sonic palette and contribute to the songwriting. Here are 10 albums where the arrival of a new drummer marked an important transitional moment in an artist’s catalog. Marshmello Joins Avril Lavigne On Nostalgic Pop-Punk Track, “Bite Me”

He may not be a “Sk8er Boi,” but Marshmello sure is a superstar—especially after his recent songwriting work on Avril Lavigne‘s new track, “Bite Me.” Released November 10th, it’s the lead single off Lavigne’s forthcoming seventh studio album, due in 2022. Featuring angsty lyricism and frenetic drum breaks courtesy of blink-182’s Travis Barker, “Bite Me” is a classic pop-punk anthem that harkens back to Lavigne’s distinctive early 2000s-era sound. It’s tough not to get nostalgic for afternoons spent browsing the racks at Hot Topic and head-banging to the tunes of Sum 41 and Good Charlotte. Marshmello received a songwriting credit on the single, which also features contributions from Omar Fedi, who is perhaps best k...

Padres & Airwaves: A Baseball Game With Tom DeLonge

Tom DeLonge knows everyone at Petco Park — or at least everyone at Petco Park knows Tom DeLonge. As the rare celebrity who considers himself a San Diego Padres fan, he’s a fixture at the stadium. As a season ticket holder for some of the plushest seats in the ballpark, he knows the stadium inside and out. It’s one of his favorite spots in his hometown, and it’s really the little things that he’s proud to point out as he walks through the concourse — like the composite floors around the concession stands to prevent the typical sticky concrete, the way the upper deck provides complete shade for many seats even during day games, and the hidden locations for the trained marksmen who watch over every game in the event of a security threat. When DeLonge walks through the crowds waiting for overp...

Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus Confirms Cancer Diagnosis

After sharing and deleting an Instagram story of himself in what appeared to be a medical office with the caption of “Yes hello. One cancer treatment, please,” Blink-182 bassist and vocalist Mark Hoppus confirmed his cancer diagnosis on his official Twitter on Wednesday. “For the past three months I’ve been undergoing chemotherapy for cancer,” the post reads. I have cancer. It sucks and I’m scared, and at the same time I’m blessed with incredible doctors and family and friends to get me through this. I still have months of treatment ahead of me but I’m trying to remain hopeful and positive. Can’t wait to be cancer free and see you all at a concert in the near future. Love to you all.” In addition to his well-known musical ventures, Hoppus also hosts the show After School Radio on Apple Mus...
