If Black Thought thinks highly of your music consider yourself lucky. The Philly native says Mach Hommy and a handful of others are some of his favorite underrated rappers. The legendary lyricist joined his Roots bandmate on the Questlove Supreme podcast to discuss his recently released memoir The Upcycled Self. While the duo discussed a variety […]
A long-rumored collaboration between producer Danger Mouse (Brian Burton) and The Roots rapper/lyricist Black Thought (Tariq Trotter) that has been in the works for more than a decade will finally see the light of day this summer. The pair’s album, Cheat Codes, is due Aug. 12 from BMG and is led by its first single “No Gold Teeth,” an UNCANNY-directed black-and-white video for which is out now. The 12-track Cheat Codes marks Danger Mouse’s return to hip-hop for the first time since his 2005-era work with the late MF Doom on The Mouse and Mask, credited to DANGERDOOM. It also follows Black Thought’s solo releases Streams of Thought, which came out in three volumes from 2018-2020. Doom is in fact featured on Cheat Codes, as are A$AP Rocky, Run the Jewels, Raekwon, Michael Kiwanuka, Joey Bada...
Source: NBC / Getty While OG Hip-Hoppers have been up on Black Thought‘s timeless lyrical prowess, lately he’s been getting the attention of more fans thanks to some freestyles that most rappers wish they could put down on paper with a pen. Now that his latest LP Streams of Thought Vol. 3 is out for public consumption, Black Thought revealed what he has in store for fans with his next release and man is it a doozy. During an interview with Hot 97’s Ebro In The Morning, The Roots front man revealed that instead of adding another volume to his Streams of Thought series, he’d be linking up with none other than fan favorite producer Danger Mouse, and releasing a full length standalone project he’s dubbed the “Dangerous Thoughts” album. Though it seems like the Illadelphia rapper is still ...
The Roots co-founder Malik B. died earlier on Wednesday at the age of 47. After his cousin, Don Champion, delivered the news, tributes from the music community began to pour in, but none were as powerful as those from his former Roots bandmates. Black Thought and Questlove remembered Malik B. — who was in the group from 1987-1999 and made a few sporadic appearances in the 2000s — but in different fashions. Black Thought honored the memory of Malik in a solemn Instagram post. “We made a name and carved a lane together where there was none. We ressurected [sic] a city from the ashes, put it on our backs and called it Illadelph. In friendly competition with you from day one, I always felt as if I possessed only a mere fraction of your true gift and potential. Your steel sharpened my steel as ...
Source: Scott Dudelson / Getty The Hip-Hop world is reeling due to the unexpected passing of Malik B. But one person certainly more pointedly feeling the pain of the fallen MC leaving this Earth too soon is his friend and fellow Roots founding member Black Thought. While Black Thought, born Tariq Trotter, and Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson initially found the Square Roots, Malik B would join the fold before the release of their debut album, Organix. But Do You Want More?!!!??! in 1995 was their breakthrough stateside, with Malik blessing bars on their projects until his departure around 2000. Taking to Instagram, Black Thought dropped some heartfelt words in tribute to his late partner in rhyme, making sure to know his greatness on the microphone inspired him to be that much better. “We made a...
Source: Sean Zanni / Getty For well over two decades, Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter has maintained his status as one of the best Hip-Hop artists to ever grace a microphone. Although the Bad Lieutenant is forever connected to The Roots for good reason, Black Thought’s solo run via his Streams Of Thought series will be getting a new installment on July 31. The latest EP, Streams of Thought, Vol. 3: Cane and Abel, continues Black Thought’s lyrical examinations and dominance within the art form, employing the same strategy of working with one producer as he did with the previous installment. This time, Thought’s new drop is produced solely by Sean C, who has worked with Jay-Z, Pusha T, Joey BadA$$, and more. Billed as an EP, the 13-track release features the likes of ScHoolboy Q, Swizz Beatz, ...
Iggy Pop, David Byrne and other artists are collaborating on a new art project by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan. Titled Bedtime Stories, the digital art project asks each collaborator to read from their favorite book — whether it’s “a sentence, passage, chapter, or more.” Some contributors have read their favorite passages while others have shared something they wrote themselves. There were some who also shared an impromptu performance. To kick off the series, which is available on New Museum’s website, Pop pays tribute to his dog. “You were such a good-looking little dog,” he said in the recording. “And the next thing I knew, there you were, standing by my truck, looking up at me. I picked you up, put you on my lap and thought about keeping you — and in less than a minute I was co...
Source: NBC / Getty As members of The Roots, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and Tarik “Black Thought” Trotter have been rightly heralded as one of Hip-Hop’s brightest acts and now they’re taking their talents to new levels. It was recently announced that the longtime bandmates and friends have signed a first-look deal with Universal Television Alternative Studio and Universal Television. The new three-year deal will have the pair overseeing the development of a series of original programs, including both scripted and unscripted works, via their Two One Five Entertainment brand. This adds to the Questlove and Black Thought’s ongoing relationship with NBC as members of Jimmy Fallon’s house band for his late-night television program. “This deal is very important to us as we’ve been content produc...
