This summer has seen John Boyega step up as a passionate voice in the Black Lives Matter movement. Some have cautioned that being so vocal would threaten the career he built for himself after staring in the latest Star Wars trilogy. But as the actor revealed in a new cover story for GQ, it’s exactly his experiences making Star Wars that led him to become “much more militant” in the fight for equality. When it was first revealed that Boyega would play a Stormtrooper defector in The Force Awakens, there was a pocket of racist backlash over the idea of a Black member of the First Order. “I’m the only cast member who had their own unique experience of that franchise based on their race,” Boyega told GQ. “Let’s just leave it like that.” He continued, explaining how his “frustration” stems from ...
Source: Icon Sportswire / Getty College football is a vital part of the fabric of Southern America, and typically isn’t an arena where political statements are made. However, the University of Alabama football, with head coach Nick Saban in tow, marched on behalf of the Black Lives Matter movement. As reported by local outlet WBMA, Saban, joined with members of his team on Monday (August 31) in Tuscaloosa, Ala. It appears to be the first such organized march made by the team, with the moment inspired by the instances of racial and social injustice nationwide, in particular Black people being shot by police. “Throughout this process I’ve learned a lot from our players. I don’t get to the see the world in the same lens a lot of our players do. I respect and appreciate the lens that they see ...
Source: Robert Gauthier / Getty It has happened again. Yesterday (August 31), police in Los Angeles shot and killed another Black man when he ran away from police after officers tried to stop him for a “bicycle code violation.” According to News One, 29-year-old Dijon Kizzee became the latest Black man to fall victim to trigger happy police officers from the LA Sheriff’s Department in Los Angeles. While the killing sparked protests in LA on Monday night, the LASD tried to justify the shooting by saying that Kizzee dropped a gun and ran away before “assaulting” an officer and ultimately being shot dead on the scene. Even as he laid there lifeless on the pavement, police proceeded to handcuff Kizzee’s hands behind his back because, well, y’all know. This is #DijonKizzee, 29 yrs old and shot ...
Source: Al Pereira / Getty There is a deep-seated, racist sickness in America that rears its ugly head far too often. In the latest example, ex-NFL star Brandon Marshall had the cops called on him by security that was refusing to let him move into his own new home. Think about how outrageous that sounds, but it’s absolutely true. We know because Marshall shared footage of the incident on his Instagram. “This is the problem,” an irate Marshall can be heard, reading security the riot act. “I come here, you feel uncomfortable, my first day moving into my new house, because my name’s not on the list you call the cops.” Marshall also noted that he had two kids in the car, and that other Black people lived in the area in…wait for it…Florida. Regardless, calling the cops was wholly unnecessary. T...
Source: Kevin C. Cox / Getty After a few days of boycotting the playoffs to demand justice for the unjustified shooting of Jacob Blake, it looks like the players of the NBA are ready to get back on the court and resume play. According to Raw Story, the players have decided to finish out the remainder of the playoffs and crown an NBA champion, but no dates have been set yet as the NBA has still postponed the games as originally scheduled. Yesterday the players held a meeting before noon and though LeBron James’s Lakers and Kawhi Leonard’s Clippers were initially adamant about completely canceling the season (can you blame them?), they eventually came around to finishing out the remainder of the playoffs. Though the playoffs were expected to resume as early as today (August 28), no games hav...
Source: Cindy Ord / Getty NFL legend Brian Urlacher doesn’t care about Black people. That’s the only way to explain a headass message the former Chicago Bears linebacker posted on Instagram where he expressed disdain for NBA players having the nerve to go on strike in order to protest racial injustice. It was nice of Brian Urlacher to let every black teammate he ever played with know their lives aren’t worth shit. Also, FYI, the knife was found after he’d been shot. The cops who shot him didn’t know about, or see, it. Also, cops are supposed to arrest, not kill, people. pic.twitter.com/W3SoQuGkzq — Bill McCormick (@BillMcSciFi) August 27, 2020 On Instagram, Urlacher invoked spectacular yet tragic on-field performance from Brett Favre, as evidence that Black basketball pla...
