Last night, some of the many musicians inspired by David Bowie joined forces to celebrate the Thin White Duke. Curated and hosted by Bowie’s longtime collaborator Mike Garson, A Bowie Celebration: Just For One Day! was highlighted by Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan singing “Space Oddity” and Trent Reznor, joined by his Nine Inch Nails bandmate Atticus Ross and wife Mariqueen Maandig, taking on “Fantastic Voyage” and “Fashion.” Garson accompanied each performance on piano. Following his death earlier this month, musicians who were fortunate enough to meet Eddie Van Halen have been sharing their fondest memories. During an interview with BBC Radio 6, Billy Corgan reminisced about watching the Van Halen guitarist play in his studio circa 1997, calling it “a religious experience.” “Oh my God! For American guitar players, he was the supreme thing. He’s the one who pushed us to be better than we probably would have been,” the Smashing Pumpkins bandleader gushed after he was asked about EVH’s influence on his own guitar playing. “I was lucky because, around 1997 [or] ’98, there was a guitar magazine in America, and I went to them, and I said, ‘I’d really like to interview Eddie Van Halen,’” he continued. “And they said, ‘Why do you wanna interview ...

Jay-Z’s The Black Album has not only earned its own accolades, but it helped birth one of Danger Mouse’s lauded mashups — The Grey Album — bringing together Hova’s 2003 LP with the Beatles’ iconic 1968 The White Album. But now there’s another mashup that also brings some punch. On Marcy Projects And The Infinite Sadness, Spose brings The Black Album together with Smashing Pumpkins hit 1995 album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. Unlike Danger Mouse’s project, Spose makes conscious choices on the mixes like “Public Service Announcement” with “Cherub Rock.” I’m not sure how long this will exist before it gets taken down but I re-produced the entire “Black Album” by my favorite rapper Jay-Z using only music by my favorite band The Smashing Pumpkins, enjoy!!!...
Back in January, Billy Corgan revealed that the Smashing Pumpkins were working on new material. But since then, the global pandemic hit and well, things have changed a little bit, to put it mildly. However, he did “stop by” The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon: At Home Edition on Monday night (May 18) to perform solo. Rocking a black bucket hat and some quarantine scruff, the Smashing Pumpkins lead singer performed “Hard Times,” which is off his 2019 album, Cotillions that he released as William Patrick Corgan. While it’s not the usual sound many are used to from Corgan, the unplugged track had lyrics that fit perfectly with what we’re all feeling right now.
