The Barry Season 3 Finale Captures Keenly Why Connection Matters

[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers through the Season 3 finale of Barry, “starting now.”] It has always been a tricky thing, calling Barry a comedy, but the show may have left that word behind for good. The third season of the Emmy-winning HBO series has been awfully focused on consequences — or, more importantly, the ripple effects of a person’s actions in life, especially when those actions involve the death of another. And while we’ve been seeing those ripple effects all season long, primarily in the form of people trying to kill Barry (Bill Hader) as revenge for his past crimes, things really do come full circle in the season finale. Breaking it down, the narrative’s a relatively simple one, wrapping up key storylines across the season. Gene’s (Henry Winkler) career prospe...

Barry Season 3 Review: Bill Hader’s Hollywood Hit-Man Gets Even Darker and More Complex

The Pitch: Coming back after one of the longer pandemic-era delays on record, the third season of Barry is all about consequences. The HBO dramedy has never strayed far from depicting the brutal repercussions of hit-man Barry’s (Bill Hader) decision to attempt transitioning out of the assassination-for-hire game for a new life as an actor. But the stakes feel even higher now, with reason for serious concern not just for the lives of every character in Barry’s circle, but their souls. That means yet more of the brilliantly nuanced character work nurtured by creators Hader and Alex Berg, but also yet more of the show’s unconventional action and fascinating directing choices. With the cast all returning at the top of their game, the only potential concern one might have about the new season o...

During this go-around, Barry (Hader) is fully committed to ditching his former life as a hitman in order to pursue his newfound dream of professional acting. But it isn’t easy to get out of a past as dark and violent as his; while Barry has physically extricated himself from the circumstances that pushed him toward killing, he still has many psychological demons to face. In the trailer, a desperate Barry has tough conversations with major people from both his past and present, including his former handler Monroe (Stephen Root), and his former acting teacher Mr. Cousineau (Henry Winkler). Meanwhile, Barry’s girlfriend Sally (...

Bill Hader’s Barry Season 3 Reveals Release Date for HBO Return

After far, far, far too long off the air, Barry Season 3 is almost upon us. The HBO dark comedy about a hit man who chooses to pursue a new and very dangerous line of work — acting — has been off the air since 2019, with creators Bill Hader and Alex Berg using the pandemic downtime to refine the scripts. The core cast of Barry includes Hader, Henry Winkler, Stephen Root, Sarah Goldberg, and Anthony Carrigan. The first two seasons of Barry have earned a cumulative 30 Emmy nominations, with six wins including lead actor and supporting actor awards for Hader and Winkler. Season 2 of Barry left off with Barry (Hader) being even closer to his secret life being exposed, as Gene (Winkler) gets tipped off to Barry’s dangerous nature. We’ll find out what happens next when the series returns, and he...
