This year BET Awards 2020 would be a virtual event due to lockdown regulations to curb the spread of Corona Virus. The event would be broadcast from L.A. Live, Los Angeles, California, United States. As usual, the BET celebrates black excellence in music, movies, sports and television. This year BET would be marking its 4oth anniversary while the BET Awards turns 20. Public Enemy Perform “Fight the Power” with Nas, The Roots, and More: Watch

Public Enemy joined forces with Nas, The Roots’ Questlove and Black Thought, YG, and Rapsody for a special performance of “Fight the Power” to kick off the 2020 BET Awards on Sunday night. The all-star collaboration, which was filmed remotely, was interspersed with protest footage and other powerful imagery to go along with updated lyrics referencing George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Rayshard Brook. Elsewhere during the BET Awards, Lil Wayne revisited his 2009 track “Kobe Bryant” in tribute to the late NBA legend; Megan The Stallion delivered a post apocalyptical performance of her new single “Girls in the Hood” and her remix of “Savage”; and DaBaby referenced George Floyd’s murder in a powerful visual for his performance of “Rockstar”. For the final performance of the 2020 BET Awards on Sunday (June 28), gospel star Kierra Sheard took to the stage with her mother Karen Clark-Sheard (of The Clark Sisters) to send audiences away with a moment of hope. Lizzo, Megan Thee Stallion & Other Record Setters at the 2020 BET Awards

There were first-time winners in several key categories at the 20th annual BET Awards. Lizzo was named best female R&B/pop artist. She beat Beyoncé, who had won 10 times in this category, including the last six years in a row. Megan Thee Stallion won best female hip-hop artist, beating two former winners in the category – Cardi B, who had won the last two years, and seven-time winner Nicki Minaj. DaBaby won best male hip-hop artist, beating four-time winner Drake, among others. Gymnast Simone Biles won sportswoman of the year for the first time. BET president Scott Mills wants viewers of this year’s BET Awards to understand one thing up front: don’t call it a virtual awards show. It’s a “complete mischaracterization of what the show is,” says Mills of the BET Awards which, like many other special events, has had to shift gears as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to rage. According to Billboard, Drake has six nominations at this year’s iteration of the awards, while Megan and Roddy Ricch both have five nominations each. This year’s award show commemorates the award ceremony’s 20th anniversary along with the 40th anniversary of the network. The list of nominees reveals that Drake brought in the most nominations, including Best Male Hip-Hop Artist, Video of the Year, and two nominations each for Best Collaboration and Viewer’s Choice.
