Barbados has begun seeking reparations from the descendants of slave owners, as The Daily Beast reports, and that may soon include the family of Oscar-nominated actor Benedict Cumberbatch. Cumberbatch’s seventh great-grandfather bought the island’s Cleland plantation in 1728 and passed down ownership until 1834, when slavery was abolished in Barbados. That plantation reportedly exploited 250 enslaved people and became the foundation of the Cumberbatch family fortune, a fact that the actor hasn’t shied away from. Published in 1977, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar tells the tale of a wealthy man who gains the power to see through things after sewing his eyes shut. He uses his new-found ability to win large sums of money playing cards, but he soon comes to realize that more than his eyes have been changed by the procedure.
