Beck No Longer Opening for Arcade Fire on Tour

Beck will no longer serve as the opening act on Arcade Fire‘s upcoming North American tour, Billboard can confirm. Instead, the Haitian band Boukman Eksperyans will take his place. Explore See latest videos, charts and news See latest videos, charts and news While Beck didn’t provide a reason for his decision, his exit comes just months after sexual misconduct allegations against Arcade Fire’s frontman Win Butler. The allegations against Butler were first published on Aug. 27 in a Pitchfork story. The report detailed the accounts of four individuals who claimed to have had inappropriate sexual interactions with Butler, with one alleging that the singer had assaulted them; he has denied that any of the alleged incidents were nonconsensual. Beck Withdraws From Opening Slot on Arcade Fire’s Fall Tour

In the wake of sexual misconduct accusations against lead singer Win Butler a few months ago, Arcade Fire has continued with its fall tour, currently hitting North America. Today, however, Beck, who was slated to open the shows, withdrew from the tour after opening its European leg. Ticketholders were informed by email of Beck’s departure. A rep for the artist, who confirmed that he left the tour, did not provide any additional comment. Haitian band Boukman Eksperyans will take Beck’s slot. The tour will begin in Washington, D.C. later this month. Feist opened the first shows of that leg before dropping off, saying that it was “incredibly difficult for me and I can only imagine how much more difficult it’s been for the people who came forward. More than anything I wish healing to those inv...

Beck Covers Neil Young’s ‘Old Man’ in Homage to Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes

Last night during a commercial during the Sunday Night Football clash between the San Francisco 49ers and Denver Broncos, Beck covered Neil Young’s “Old Man.” Now, his version of the song is available to stream. But how do Beck and Young relate to football? In highlighting the song’s lyric, “24 and there’s so much more,” the NBC Sports ad was to promote the forthcoming Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Kansas City Chiefs game (Oct. 2) and was made in tribute to both team’s quarterbacks, Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes, who both won a Super Bowl at the age of 24. (Young’s music is still unavailable on Spotify after he pulled it in January after he was dismayed by the streamer keeping Joe Rogan on its platform.) The advertisement shows clips of Brady and Mahomes celebrating their Super Bowl victories a...

Jack White Impersonates Beck at Nashville Show

During an intimate acoustic Beck performance at Nashville’s Basement East, Jack White pretended to be the “Where It’s At” singer at the beginning of the show. “Hello ladies and gentlemen, I’m Beck. I’m gonna play you one of my favorite songs from the 1990s that I wrote,” said White as he began the bit. White proceeded to play a part of “Tubthumping” by Chumbawamba and “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” by The Proclaimers. Beck entered the stage after a short period and asked Jack what he was doing. White jokingly quipped he “warmed it up for you” and even tuned Beck’s guitar. Footage of the exchange was posted the Third Man Record’s Instagram page. White has recently been busy with his own musical solo endeavors. Fear of the Dawn will be released on April 8 and Entering Heaven Alive on July 22. So...

The 90 Greatest Albums of the ’90s

This article originally appeared in the September 1999 issue of SPIN. “You must be high.” We heard that a lot during the time we spent preparing this issue. Which is understandable. Pronouncing the 90 greatest albums of the ’90s is a somewhat presumptuous thing to do. When you’re measuring the music this decade is offering to history—the sounds we partied with, copulated to, fought about, and wept over—everyone has an opinion. That ours should be more valid than yours is debatable. But hey—it’s our magazine. What, then, you ask, constitutes “greatest”? Don’t even start. Suffice it to say that, after much heated discussion and countless veiled insults, it came down to the factors of both remarkable artistry and cultural shock value. Sometimes a record’s knock-you-off-your-Skechers impa...

The 10 Best Indie and Alternative Leonard Cohen Covers

Leonard Cohen is the definition of a songwriter’s songwriter, the kind of artist you’d seldom hear on the radio, but was revered by countless musicians as one of the greatest lyricists in the world. An accomplished poet and novelist before he ever recorded an album, Cohen’s songs were vivid and literary, full of politics, dark humor, and frank sexuality. Though classic rock icons like Billy Joel and James Taylor have covered him, and Pentatonix has moronically attempted to make “Hallelujah” into a Christmas standard, Leonard Cohen’s legacy has grown more when he’s been covered by artists who share Cohen’s subversive edge or name-checked in songs like Nirvana’s “Pennyroyal Tea.” November 7 marks the 5th anniversary of the Canadian legend’s death in 2016, so here’s a look back at 10 of the b...

Beck Says That Paul McCartney’s Dance Moves Inspired Remix of ‘Find My Way’

Imagine walking into a West Hollywood club and seeing Paul McCartney and wife Nancy tearing it up on the dance floor while indie icon Beck watched? Well, it happened, and Beck, more-than-impressed with Macca’s fancy footwork, channeled that evening as inspiration for a remix of McCartney’s “Find My Way (Feat. Beck)” track. “I remember hanging out with Paul and his wife Nancy several years ago and Nancy mentioned that she wanted to go out dancing before calling it a night,” Beck recalls. “We ended up at some club in West Hollywood and I remember noticing that Paul and Nancy were TEARING IT UP – really enjoying themselves more than anyone else on the dance floor.” <!– // Brid Player Singles. var _bp = _bp||[]; _bp.push({ “div”: “Brid_10143537”, R...

Paul McCartney’s McCartney III Imagined to Feature Phoebe Bridgers, Damon Albarn, St Vincent, Josh Homme, Anderson .Paak

Paul McCartney ended up having quite a productive lockdown, or in his own words, “rockdown.” He made an album by his lonesome, the aptly titled McCartney III that was released in December. Now? He’s upped the ante quite a bit! The ex-Beatle has personally enlisted an all-star group of artists to contribute their takes on a fresh version of the LP titled McCartney III Imagined. Phoebe Bridgers, St. Vincent, Josh Homme, Anderson .Paak, Damon Albarn and Massive Attack are just some of the big-timers who lent their talents to the collection with either a new performance or a remix of the original tune. <!– // Brid Player Singles. var _bp = _bp||[]; _bp.push({ “div”: “Brid_10143537”, “obj”: {“id”:”25115″,”width...
