Add Bernard Sumner to the list of artists who’ve contracted the novel coronavirus. Speaking with The Current’s Jill Riley, the New Order frontman revealed he caught COVID-19 from a colleague in the past month. “I’m just recovering from coronavirus actually,” he explained. The illness rendered his voice “gruff,” and he can’t smell anything, but Sumner counts himself as “one of the lucky ones. I didn’t get it too bad. I’m ok. Walking the interviewer though the symptoms (“I had a little bit of a temperature, but not much”), Sumner experienced relief for four days, then the issues returned. “When it came back, it was more severe, but still not too bad. I just felt extreme fatigue, like a really bad hangover. And then it went away, and I’m okay.” Sumner is on...

She may still be Jenny from the block. But she’s also an icon. Jennifer Lopez received the People’s icon award at the 2020 People’s Choice Awards. Armie Hammer introduced Lopez at the ceremony. “Why can’t a bonafide movie star dominate the music charts?” he said. “Every step she took was the opposite of traditional, and she pursued her dreams full force and never waited on someone else to give her permission,” he continued. “Jennifer leads with compassion and kindness and her joy for life is contagious,” he added. {“nid”:”9484545″,”type”:”post”,”title”:”Justin Bieber Gets 'Lonely' and 'Holy' at the 2020 People's Choice Awards”,”r...
Delta Goodrem will host next week’s 2020 ARIA Awards, organizers announced Monday (Nov. 16). It’s a first for the hitmaking pop star, who has achieved almost every other honor the Australian music industry has to offer. Over her career, Goodrem has snagged 12 ARIAs, nine No. 1 singles and four No. 1 albums, including Innocent Eyes, recognized as the second best-selling LP by an Australian artist of all-time, behind only John Farnham’s Whispering Jack. Innocent Eyes spent a whopping 29 consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the ARIA Albums Chart following its release in 2003. {“nid”:”9481913″,”type”:”post”,”title”:”Sia to Perform at 2020 ARIA Awards”,”relative_path”:”\/articles\/news\/9481913\/sia-perform-2020-...
Ariana Grande’s Positions spends a second week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, as the set earned 82,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in the week ending Nov. 12 (down 53%), according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data. It bowed atop the list a week ago with 174,000 units earned. It’s Grande’s second chart-topping album to spend two weeks at No. 1, following Thank U, Next, which spent a total of two weeks in the lead (its debut week, and second week – Feb. 23 and March 2, 2019). Positions is Grande’s fifth No. 1 album overall. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit eq...
It started with a Twitter guarantee — acclaimed indie singer/songwriter Phoebe Bridgers promising to cover the Goo Goo Dolls’ minivan rock classic “Iris” if Donald Trump lost the presidential election. It was taken to the next level with a response by fellow alternative star and critics’ darling Maggie Rogers, who responded by asking if Bridgers could use some backup harmonies on her rendition. And now, it’s set to be one of the week’s best-selling songs. Bridgers and Rogers’ “Iris” cover — credited to “Phoebe & Maggie,” and sold as a pay-what-you-want one-day exclusive on Bandcamp — sold 28,000 copies this Friday (Nov. 13) in the U.S., according to initial reports to Nielsen Music/MRC Data. In years past, Steve Chilton had often considered opening his Phoenix venue, The Rebel Lounge, as a coffee shop with friends and Driftwood Coffee owners Luke Bentley and Lance Linderman. The space — which has hosted artists including Jimmy Eat World, Lucky Daye and Soccer Mommy — typically sat dormant during the day, and he had the room, but with promoting shows as Psyko Steve Presents and near-daily sound checks, the idea never came to fruition. {“nid”:”9334875″,”type”:”post”,”title”:”How Independent Venues Are Dealing With Large-Gathering Coronavirus Bans, Inevitable Loss of Small Rooms”,”relative_path”:”\/articles\/business\/touring\/9334875\/independent-venues-coronavirus-gathering-bans\/”,&...

It’s been a huge week for Kelsea Ballerini, and there’s still a weekend to come. On Wednesday, the Tennessee singer and songwriter performed her hit single “Hole in the Bottle” at the 2020 CMA Awards, filling in as a late call-up due to several performers being unwell or exposed to COVID-19. comin up roses // CMA awards pic.twitter.com/J4QNWbfod0 — Kelsea Ballerini (@KelseaBallerini) November 13, 2020 At midnight Thursday, the country star dropped a new cut of “Hole in the Bottle” from her Kelsea set, this time featuring the legendary Canadian singer Shania Twain. Jason Isbell is protesting against the Country Music Association for overlooking some of country’s lost greats during its awards ceremony. In a post late Thursday, the Alabama artist said he and his wife Amanda Shires were dumping their lifetime membership of the CMA after John Prine, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Billy Joe Shaver weren’t recognized during the 2020 CMA Awards the previous night. He wrote, “Due to CMAs failure to mention John Prine, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Billy Joe Shaver at the CMA’s last night, @amandashires and I have decided to return our membership cards. I doubt anybody will care, but we cared a lot about our heroes.” Due to @CountryMusic’s failure to mention John Prine, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Billy Joe Shaver at the CMA’s last night, @amandashires and I have decided t...
The Country Music Association Awards on Nov. 11 prompted notable immediate sales gains for the songs performed on the show, according to initial reports to Nielsen Music/MRC Data. Collectively, the songs performed on the three-hour show sold 29,000 downloads on Nov. 11 in the U.S. — a gain of 770% compared to the 3,000 they sold on Nov. 10. More gains could be collected in the days following the show. (News on any further significant sales gains, as well as streaming gains for the performed songs will be reported in the coming days.) The sales numbers include the original and popularized versions of songs covered on the show (such as Elvis Presley’s rendition of the Mac Davis-penned “In the Ghetto” and Johnny Lee’s “Lookin’ for Love,” which were performed on the CMA Awards by R...
The CMAs instituted a strict COVID-19 protocol complete with rigorous testing. Even given the latest surge, it was still a surprise that prior to the show’s kick off Lee Brice, Florida Georgia Line’s Tyler Hubbard, fiddle player Jenee Fleenor and the members of Lady A had all pulled out of their performances because they or someone in their family had tested positive. During the show, Rascal Flatts posted that they too were absent because an unspecified band member had tested positive. Hopefully the safeguards the CMAs put in place will mean we’re not hearing about more positive results over the next week or so given the largely unmasked audience. Despite the big-name absences, the show still provided several top-notch appearances that reinforced that most country artists don’t need bells ...
