3 Women Are Nominated For Best Direction at the VMAs And Not One Had a Co-Director: That’s a First!

This is a much more vibrant outlook for female directors than at the Oscars, where two women have never been nominated for best director in the same year. Three women are nominated for best direction at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, which will be presented on Aug. 30 — Taylor Swift for “The Man,” Billie Eilish for “xanny” and Hannah Lux Davis for Doja Cat’s “Say So.” It’s only the second time in the VMAs’ 37-year history that three women have been nominated in this category in the same year—and it’s the first time it’s happened where none of the female directors had a male co-director. Female directors had three of the five nominees in this category in 2005, but only Floria Sigismondi was nominated for a clip she directed by herself—The White Stripes’ “Blue Orchid.” The other t...

HBO’s dystopian graphic novel adaptation Watchmen topped all nominees with 26 nods, followed by Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (20), Netflix’s Ozark (18) and HBO’s Succession (18), while Disney+ got into the game in its first year with the Star Wars spin-off The Mandalorian tying Saturday Night Live and the final season of Schitt’s Creek with 15 each. Grammy.com Readers Are Split About the Grammys’ New ‘Progressive R&B’ Category Name

Response was about evenly divided between the one positive response and the other two, which were negative or neutral. The Grammys announced on June 10 that they were changing the name of their best urban contemporary album category to best progressive R&B album. Most observers welcomed the change. “Urban” was the buzzword in R&B for a number of years, but many now see the term as dated and perhaps racially insensitive. On June 5, Republic Records announced that it was banning the term. The name change was fair-game for a quickie poll, including this one which turned up in an unexpected place—the Recording Academy’s own site, Grammy.com: “What do you think about the Best Progressive R&B Album category name change?” The tartly-phrased choices: It’s a step in the right...

Alan Menken’s Daytime Emmy Makes Him an EGOT

Menken was born in New York City. Remarkably, the same is true of six other EGOTS. Alan Menken won a Daytime Emmy on June 12, which makes him the 16th EGOT. He won for composing “Waiting in the Wings” from Tangled: The Series: Rapunzel and the Great Tree, with lyrics by Glenn Slater. The song won outstanding original song in a children’s, young adult or animated program. Menken is the third of the 16 EGOT winners whose only Emmy is a Daytime Emmy, not a Primetime Emmy, which are higher-profile awards. Whoopi Goldberg and Robert Lopez have also won only Daytime Emmys—two each, in both cases. Goldberg won for co-hosting The View (2009) and hosting Beyond Tara: The Extraordinary Life of Hattie McDaniel (2002), about the pioneering performer who was the first African American to receive an Osc...

Academy of Country Music Launches ACM:The Hub Site With Artist Chats & At-Home Performances

The site features new series “ACM Wine Down Wednesday” and “The ACM Weekly.” The Academy of Country Music has launched a new website called ACM: The Hub, which features artist conversations, at-home acoustic performances, access to artist merchandise and weekly ACM-curated playlists. ACM: The Hub was developed in response to COVID-19 freezing the concert and festival world. When the academy recognized that artists were turning to live performances via web streams to stay connected with their fans, it developed The Hub to curate artist content in one place. “The academy’s goal is to help fans and artists connect during these quarantined times [in which there are] no live shows.” said Damon Whiteside, the academy’s CEO. “We want to provide fans with a dedicated place to see t...

Halsey’s ‘Without Me’ Wins Song Of the Year at BMI Pop Awards; Khalid & Post Malone Share Songwriter of the Year

“We look forward to celebrating with everyone in person at next year’s ceremony,” said BMI’s Barbara Cane. “Without Me,” which was co-written by BMI writers Halsey and Delacey, was awarded song of the year at the 68th annual BMI Pop Awards. The single reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Halsey’s first No. 1 as a lead artist. It’s also the first song that Halsey wrote under her given name, Ashley Frangipane. Khalid and Post Malone shared the award for songwriter of the year at the event, which, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, was held virtually. Both singer/songwriters co-wrote four of BMI’s top-performed songs of 2019 — in each case, three songs on which they were the lead (or co-lead) artist and one on which they were the featured artist. Khalid sc...

The 2009 Emmy Awards Experiment That Reshaped Award Shows

The trend at award shows these days as far as the number of nominees in marquee categories is go big or go home. The Emmy Awards bucked 60 years of tradition when they announced the nominees for the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards on July 16, 2009. They unveiled seven nominees for each of what are widely seen as their top awards—outstanding comedy series and outstanding drama series. They had usually had five nominees in each of these categories. Six and a half months later, on Feb. 2, 2010, the Oscars took it even further when they announced the nominees for the 82nd annual Academy Awards. They unveiled 10 nominees for their flagship award, best picture, up from the usual five. They announced 10 nominees the following year as well. The Tony Awards have a much smaller field of potential nominee...
