Michigan State Music Professors Say Latin Grammy-Nominated Project Is ‘Bridging the Gap’ Between Cultures

It’s not often college music students get recognized by the Latin Recording Academy, much less the Wind Symphony ensemble, which means this type of recognition “legitimizes what we do,” says Sedatole. But more than that, adds Lorenz, “we’re bridging the gap [between cultures], especially in a state like Michigan where the Latino voice is not heard, although I know it’s there. It shows the world that the Latin culture is alive and well, even here in the middle of Michigan.” MSU is located in East Lansing, Mich., where there’s a population of a little over 48,000, according to the census, and  4.8 percent of the population is Latino. At least five out of the 50 members in the ensemble are Latino, says Lorenz, so for most of the musicians, “...

With No Live Performances on This Year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Program, Here’s How the Producers Told the Honorees’ Stories

Peresman thinks the highlights packages turned out so well that he hopes to have them as the basis for a spinoff show in the future. “[Once the pandemic is over], the plan is to go back to the format that we had [with shorter clip packages, plus an introduction, acceptance speech and performance by each honoree]. What would be great is if we could create an additional program that could go a little deeper and tell some of these stories about the artists. If we could create some additional programming that we could run with our media partner [HBO] that goes a little deeper and tells the stories about these artists, that would be ideal.” The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony was originally set to be held on May 2 at Cleveland’s Public Hall. “We had hotels booked, flights booked, ...

Tobe Nwigwe Bites Into ‘Eat,’ ‘Try Jesus’ at 2020 BET Hip Hop Awards

Wearing a long shirt with the faces of Black people slain by police officers (including Breonna Taylor and George Floyd), rising rapper Tobe Nwigwe got some shine at the 2020 Bet Hip Hop Awards on Tuesday (Oct. 27) evening. The Houston spitter opened with his soul-tinged “Try Jesus” (“Try Jesus, not me / Because I throw hands”) before transitioning into a full-throttled version of “Eat.” Joined by his wife, Fat, the duo bit into the single, delivering a precise and impactful performance of music with a message in a stark, theater-in-the-round set. In her first appearance at the BET Hip Hop Awards on Tuesday night (Oct. 27), Atlanta rapper Mulatto performed a medley of singles from her breakout year, with a special appearance from local legend Gucci Mane. Appearing from the stage (and then the parking lot) at the world-famous ATL strip club Magic City, Mulatto ran through her Billboard Hot 100 hit “B–ch From Da Souf” and current radio staple “Muwop.” Mane appeared for his guest verse on “Muwop,” which was both titled after the veteran MC’s “Guwop” nickname, and heavily interpolates his 2007 single “Freaky Gurl.” You Deserve to Make Money Even When you are looking for Dates Online. Big Sean brought some famous friends with him when he performed “Body Language” at the 2020 BET Hip Hop Awards on Tuesday (Oct. 27). Along for the ride were track collaborators Ty Dolla $ign and Jhene Aiko. Their steamy performance kicked off with Big Sean and Aiko watching TV on a set built to resemble a bedroom. Outside the “windows,” a massive forest fire burned, casting a red light on everything as the two sang. Later, as Ty Dolla $ign was singing in the fog, lightning flashed. At one point, as Aiko and Big Sean sang, the latter sat down on the bed, with Aiko eventually joining him on his lap. “Bring that body to me/ Baby, come closer, closer/ Bring it to me/ Oh, yeah, baby, I’ll give you ecstasy,” she crooned. American Music Awards Adds Three Latin Categories, Matching It With Soul/R&B and Rap/Hip-Hop

The expansion of coverage for Latin music in the AMAs is a clear signal of the genre’s increasing popularity and crossover appeal. The AMAs are a ratings-driven show. If they do something, it’s because they think it’s what the audience wants and demands. A quick history lesson: Dick Clark created the AMAs in 1973 as a more viewer-friendly, populist answer to the Grammy Awards. Clark, a canny showman, seemed to be saying, “Let the Grammys honor classical and jazz and all the other specialized music forms. We’ll zero in on the genres that most people care about.” For the first five years of the show, 1974-78, there were just 15 awards — five each in the three genres with the broadest appeal at the time — pop/rock, soul/R&B and country. In 1979, disco was red-hot. The show res...
