Brandi Carlile Covers Sheryl Crow’s “If It Makes You Happy” at ACL Hall of Fame: Exclusive

Austin City Limits held their 8th annual Hall of Fame ceremony last October, and now, those who weren’t lucky enough to make it to the studio can watch the event from home beginning January 7th. This go-around celebrated new inductee Sheryl Crow, and ahead of the broadcast, Consequence is exclusively premiering Brandi Carlile’s rendition of the crossover queen’s classic single “If It Makes You Happy.” “I feel like a lucky girl because I get to sing the most fun Sheryl Crow song ever,” Carlile tells the crowd as she kicks off the performances. With a chorus like that, it’s hard not to fully engage the crowd. As the night goes on, the broadcast will feature Brittney Spencer covering Crow’s “My Favorite Mistake” and Jason Isbell doing “Run, Baby, Run.” Then, Crow herself will hop on...

Robert Glasper on Bringing His Multi-Faceted Piano Music to Austin City Limits, New Song with Mac Miller: “He Was a Trailblazer”

Austin City Limits might not be the first place you think of when you want to hear jazz, but if anyone could bring the genre to the wide-spanning music festival, it’d be Robert Glasper. The four-time Grammy winner is a renowned pianist, record producer, and songwriter, whose collaborations span roots-rock mainstays like Brittany Howard to modern hip-hop legends like Kendrick Lamar and the late Mac Miller; to call Glasper just a jazz musician would be immensely reductive. When Consequence caught up with him backstage at Weekend 2 of ACL just ahead of his set at the Tito’s Vodka stage, Glasper seemed relaxed, yet excited to return to his home state for the fest’s second weekend. It’s a little surprising given the circumstances; he’d just arrived from his current home base New York City, wher...

Beto O’Rourke Hands Kacey Musgraves a Beer During ACL Festival

It seems as though Kacey Musgraves is rooting for Texas gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke. During the “Butterflies” singer’s headlining set during the second weekend of Austin City Limits Music Festival this weekend, the star told the crowd at one point, “Honestly, I could use a drink. Is there any beer or anything out there?”  O’Rourke then surprised the crowd by briefly stepping onstage to hand Musgraves a bottle of beer. Though the duo said nothing at all about the interaction, the country singer-songwriter took a swig of the beverage and said, “That really hit the spot.” O’Rourke is seen waving to the cheering crowd, before walking off the stage to enjoy the rest of the show. Austin City Limits 2021 Weekend 1 Recap: St. Vincent, Tyler, the Creator, Doja Cat and More Highlights

Some foreboding news arrived Friday morning (October 1st) of Austin City Limits‘ first weekend after two years away: heavy overnight rains in Austin forced organizers to cancel the first two hours of the fest, effectively eliminating most local talent, and push door time back to 3:00 p.m. With the memory of Bonnaroo’s recent cancellation due to flooding from Hurricane Ida still lingering and predictions that more storms were coming, there was a veritable moment of fear that we were witnessing the doom of another fest. And to make matters worse, it would have nothing to do COVID-19 safety, which was handled masterfully (though vaccination and test results checks did cause annoying waits on Day 1) — why the cruel irony, Mother Nature? Why?! Then, in twist of good luck, the torrential downpou...
