The Aston Villa crest, reimagined

The Aston Villa crest, reimagined – originally posted on Sportslens.com It’s strange someone decided once that dark murky red (Claret) and bright sky blue would make for a great combination for a football club’s colours. Stranger still that it worked so well, several other teams also adopted it (Looking at you West Ham & Burnley). There is, of course, no evidence for it, but I read somewhere that West Ham adopted the kit after a Villa player settled a gambling debt by stealing a full set of the kit. Quite a colourful story, no pun intended. Aston Villa FC was formed in 1874. Their first match was actually against the local Aston Brook St Mary’s Rugby team. They decided to play the first half under Rugby rules and the second half under Football Association rules. I would re...

Jack Grealish is a Fantastic Player – But He’s Not England’s Saviour

Jack Grealish is a Fantastic Player – But He’s Not England’s Saviour – originally posted on Sportslens.com Finding a replacement for the dazzling Paul Gascoigne has been one of the toughest tasks for the English national team. There have been so many youngsters who showed potential, so many false dawns, from your Ross Barkleys to your Dele Allis. Even Wayne Rooney, a man who was an absolute superstar for Manchester United and became England’s all-time top goalscorer, struggled to consistently produce at major tournaments. Finding ‘the next Gazza’ has proved to be nearly impossible over the last two decades. And now a new challenger has arrived on the scene, ready to rescue the Three Lions from the jaws of mediocrity and carry them to glory. That ch...

Aston Villa midfielder Trezeguet praises Arsenal’s Mohamed Elneny

Aston Villa midfielder Trezeguet has raved about Arsenal defensive midfielder Mohamed Elneny, as quoted in KingFut. Trezeguet came up against his Egypt international teammate during Villa’s 3-0 win against Arsenal away from home at the Emirates Stadium in North London in the Premier League on Sunday evening. The 26-year-old Egypt international started the match for the Villans and played for 88 minutes. Elneny started the game for the Gunners and played for the entire 90 minutes. KingFut quotes Trezeguet as saying about Elneny: “I always look to score goals with Aston Villa but my main goal is to contribute in helping my team win games. “Elneny is a hardworking player, he worked and believed in himself and kept working and ended up being a key player for Arsenal. “He played well during the...

Five summer signings who have impressed heavily

This has been a crazy start to the new season so far, with competition at the top very intense compared to the last season where Liverpool won the title at a canter. Only six points separate the top 10 teams after eight matches, with teams like Southampton, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City looking to provide a strong challenge to Liverpool and Manchester City. Once again, clubs in the Premier League spent a lot of money in the summer, and we take a look at some of the players who have impressed (not in the order of ranking) so far. Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa): The exciting striker joined Villa this summer from Brentford for a reported fee of £28m, and he is already proving to be a smart signing. With six goals and an assist in the Premier League, Watkins has formed a tele...

Have Manchester United missed a trick by not signing Jack Grealish?

Aston Villa produced arguably one of their best away performances under Dean Smith as they won 3-0 against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. While Ollie Watkins grabbed the headlines with a brace, it was Jack Grealish who once again was simply outstanding for the Villans. The Villa captain was superb last season, and he is brimming with confidence following his inclusion in the England national team set up. He has four goals and five assists in seven Premier League appearances this season, and his virtuoso display against the Gunners once again brings back the question why Manchester United didn’t sign him this summer. Grealish was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer, and there were contacts made if the reports are to be believed. United made Jadon San...

Top 5 signings that have impressed so far

The transfer window saw some very big signings arrive in the Premier League. Whilst some have yet to settle in England, let’s take a look at those who have hit the ground running. There is no doubt that the signing of the Columbian superstar from Real Madrid was a huge coup for Everton. The 29-year-old had fallen out of favour at Real Madrid so he decided to link up with Ancelotti for the third time in his career. The signing was met with both excitement and scepticism by the footballing world. His talent was obvious but could he make it in the Premier League? Well, James Rodriguez has answered that one quite clearly. The midfielder has experienced an incredible start at Everton, scoring 3 and assisting 4 in 7 games. His influence spreads further than just some goals, as he has propelled E...

Eddie Nketiah scored from close range to give the Gunners the lead, and Joe Willock scored shortly afterwards. Nicolas Pepe’s brilliant effort just after the break killed off any hopes of a potential comeback from the visitors. AEK Athens 1-2 Leicester: Jamie Vardy scored from the spot in the 18th minute after he was fouled by keeper Panagiotis Tsintotas to give Leicester the lead. Hamza Choudhury doubled the advantage a few minutes later. Althoug...

Mark Lawrenson predicts Aston Villa v Southampton

Mark Lawrenson has predicted on BBC Sport that Aston Villa will lose to Southampton at home this weekend. Villa will take on Southampton at Villa Park in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon. Liverpool legend Lawrenson believes that the Villans will lose the match 2-1. The BBC pundit was impressed by how Southampton got the better of Everton 2-0 at St. Mary’s Stadium in the Premier League last weekend. Lawrenson wrote on BBC Sport: “The more I see of Southampton, the more I like them. They were excellent against Everton, and put in a really good team performance. “They dealt with everything and stopped Everton from playing but they also looked lively up front. Che Adams and Nathan Redmond are a handful, and then you have your man Danny Ings, who scores for fun but works so hard with it. ...

Frank Lampard: Kepa Arrizabalaga out for Chelsea vs Manchester United

Kepa Arrizabalaga has been ruled out of Chelsea’s trip to Manchester United but Frank Lampard has said Petr Cech will not be drafted in as the Blues eye a long-awaited Premier League win at Old Trafford. Spain goalkeeper Kepa made yet another mistake in a 3-3 draw with Southampton last weekend after stepping in to replace Edouard Mendy, who missed out with a thigh injury. Mendy returned for a goalless Champions League draw with Sevilla in midweek instead of Kepa, who will not travel north to face United on Saturday due to a shoulder injury. Chelsea surprisingly added club legend Cech, who retired last year, to their Premier League squad but the 38-year-old keeper is not in the squad to take on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side. Lampard was asked about the status of Thiago Silva and Christian Pul...
