At 91, Bridget Riley continues to create with the same drive that first led her to create hypnotizing artwork back in the 1960s. As one of the pioneers of the Op Art movement, the British artist has continually reshaped our perception of the world through paintings, drawings and installations over the course of the past 60 years. Showing no signs of slowing down, Riley can add another first in her career as she just unveiled a ceiling painting at the British School at Rome.Entitled Verve, the artwork is a somewhat departure from her usual work, which oscillates between the rhythmic and the geometric. But by working with the institution's architecture, Riley achieves a similar harmony through a series of orderly beams of color, from a dominant sky blue and lilac, to smaller complementary co...
Puglia doesn't quite get the hype as other parts of Italy, such as Rome, the Amalfi Coast and of course, Venice. But the region is home to an array of historical monuments and 540 miles of some of the most beautiful beaches found anywhere across the country. Monopoli, a city just south of the Puglian capital of Bari, may be the hub of unexpected tourism due to a new statue of a voluptuous mermaid.Created by students from the local Luigi Rosso art school, the mermaid has drawn criticism for having rather provocative features. “It looks like a mermaid with two silicone breasts and, above all, a huge arse never seen before on a mermaid. At least not any I know," said Bari-based actor, Tiziana Schiavarelli, via Facebook. The mayor of Monopoli asked the students to create the sculpture as part o...
Having occupied a number of Japan's historic locations in the past such as Fukuyama Castle and Kairakuen Garden, teamLab now opens a solo exhibition at Shoshazan Engyoji Temple in Himeji City, Hyogo. The show looks to challenge our notion of existence, playing with forms of light and radiance that do not physically exist, but are perceptible by the viewer."When we enter teamLab’s artwork space, we come face to face with our own existence that is continuous with the space. The world does not exist separately, independent from us - rather it is continuous with us, together with us, and within us. The spheres of light created by teamLab inside Engyoji Temple, a venue regarded as a sacred location for the arts, invites viewers to reconsider the universal question of life and existence," writes...
In the seaside town of Margate, curator Ronan Mckenzie has brought a selection of 19 artists and designers together to explore themes of tenderness at the Carl Freedman Gallery. The show, titled "To Be Held", takes place across the entire space. For Mckenzie, it was important for visitors to be fully immersed in the themes she is trying to convey, and as such, employs multisensory activations around the gallery – from scents and textured walls. "This collaboration organically formed through conversations around responding to space, interiors, design, and artwork, informed by the desire to have an expansive experience of everyday spaces," says Mckenzie. Among the 19 artists and designers taking part in the show, a range of disciplines are presented – from furniture to sculpture, and paintin...

A list of editors, journalists, artists and illustrators have compiled an open letter petitioning against the use of AI generated artwork. The initiative is led by artist and author, Molly Crabapple, along with a number of prominent figures within the media world, including Vox writer Aja Romano, MSNBC commentator Chris Hayes, Popular Front journalist Jake Hanrahan and 972 others, at the time of writing. In collaboration with the Center for Artistic Inquiry and Reporting, the letter opens by drawing a symbiotic connection between writers and artists, one that "still speaks to something not just intimately connected to the news, but intrinsically human about story itself." With the rapid development (and ouput) of AI tools, such as Midjourney and DALL·E 2, the letter goes on to argue that t...
