Fragment of George Washington’s Tent Bought at Goodwill for $1,700 USD

A fragment of George Washington's tent was strangely sold on Goodwill's website for a mere $1,700 USD. It's neither the platform, nor the price you'd expect from a historical artifact once belonging to the first US president, especially one that Washington was encamped in while fighting the British during the Revolutionary War. Richard "Dana" Moore, a 70-year-old history buff who bought the fragment, was in awe at the sheer ease in buying the item in 2022. “I was like, ‘This can’t be.’ So I was a little bit astonished,” Moore told CNN, even hiding it from his wife Susan, until he did further research to verify its authenticity. Attached to the tent fragment was a small hand-written note that said that it was taken "from the history building at Jamestown Exposition 1907", and that it was th...

Buffalo AKG Art Museum Hosts Monumental Exhibition on Marisol

Marisol, born María Sol Escobar, is the focus of a retrospective at the Buffalo AKG Art Museum. A lesser-known figure of the Pop Art movement, the Venezuelan American artist was famed for her surreal, life-sized sculptures made from wood and casts of her own body. Her works often depicted friends, family, and notable figures such as John F. Kennedy and Pablo Picasso. Notably, she crafted a portrait of Georgia O’Keeffe, based on photos taken during a visit to New Mexico. Her 1966 solo exhibition at Sidney Janis Gallery in New York attracted thousands, and she received significant commissions, including a sculpture of Hugh Hefner featured on TIME magazine's cover. Representing Venezuela at the 1968 Venice Biennale, she later traveled extensively instead of capitalizing on her success. In the l...

Lavish Seafloor Mosaics Discovered off Coast of Naples

Italian archaeologists have discovered well-preserved Roman mosaics along the seafloor off the coast of Naples. The artworks hark back to the ancient city of Baiae, a formerly debaucherous town that, similar to what Las Vegas is today, was once home to all-night parties and lavish villas belonging to the social elite, such as former emperors Julius Caesar, Augustus and Nero. Due to the volcanic activity under Baiae, much of the ancient resort town crumbled into the ocean, giving way to ethereal seascapes that are comparable to the mythic city of Atlantis. The archaeological expedition was led by CSR Restauro Beni Culturali and Naumacos Underwater Archaeology and Technology, who unearthed marble Opus sectile flooring once crafted with precious stones that is to believed to be built toward t...

Landon Metz Presents His Biomorphic Paintings at Waddington Custot

American artist Landon Metz is showcasing a new body of work at Waddington Custot gallery in London. Born in Arizona and now based in Brooklyn, Metz is largely known for creating paintings depicting large biomorphic shapes in thinned-out acrylic paint that come into spatial dialogue with the surrounding environment. The eponymously titled show follows Metz' debut into the world of music, a six-track ambient EP that provides a fitting ethereal backdrop to his art practice. When asked about how he now juggles the two, Metz tells Hypeart that he's only trying to make "honest and authentic work," revealing that it was in fact music that was his first love growing up. "You can’t help but feel what it wants you to feel."Like his ethereal soundscapes, Metz' dye works on canvas deal with capturing...

Photography Highlights From Les Rencontres d’Arles 2024

Every summer, the photography world flocks to the south of France for Les Rencontres d’Arles. This major festival takes over the ancient city, drawing acclaimed photographers and making space for emerging talent. It also highlights past photographers whose work deserves another look. The festival sprawls across Arles, using everything from galleries to churches, ancient crypts, and even the local Monoprix supermarket.Running until September 29, this year’s theme, “beneath the surface,” explores tremors, turmoil, spirits, traces, and parallel readings. Sophie Calle’s exhibition, "Neither Give Nor Throw Away," fits this theme perfectly. Her series "The Blind" was damaged by mold, and now she’s letting it decompose in a damp, subterranean venue. Calle's concept is to let the beauty of the wor...

Hackers Expose Disney Slack Data in Protest of AI Art

A group named "NullBulge" dropped a 1.1 TB data bomb last week, claiming it’s Disney's internal Slack archive. This stash reportedly includes every message and file from nearly 10,000 channels—unreleased projects, code, images, login credentials, and links to internal sites and APIs. They say an insider handed it over, even naming the alleged collaborator, as per a report by WIRED. Disney’s staying quiet, only telling the Wall Street Journal they’re “investigating.” The data hit BreachForums on Thursday, got taken down, but is still on mirror sites. Roei Sherman from Mitiga Security isn't shocked. Big companies get breached all the time, especially through cloud and SaaS platforms. Sherman reviewed the leak and says it looks legit—URLs, employee chats, credentials, the works.NullBulge, cla...
