Even/Odd and Kiarostami Foundation Collaborate on Limited Collection

To celebrate the Iranian New Year, also known as Nowruz, San Francisco-based creative studio Even/Odd has worked with the Kiarostami Foundation on a special range of products celebrating the late filmmaker's impact on the world cinema. For those unfamiliar, Abbas Kiarostami created films that straddled the line between fiction and reality. Having passed away in Paris at age 76, Kiarostami had an uncanny ability to illuminate the hopes and fears of humanity, such as in his seminal film, Where is the Friend’s House? and his Palm D’Or winning Taste of Cherry. A Conversation With Tyrrell Winston at His First Hong Kong Exhibition

In time for Art Basel, Tyrrell Winston has set up Double Technical, his first exhibition in Hong Kong. Located in Landmark Atrium and at the heart of the city's bustling financial district, Winston’s unique basketball court takes center stage inside the mall. Stretching 12 meters long and 10 meters in width, the installation takes on an almost squarish setting, where it houses three basketball nets of varying heights, atop a surreal and warped ground.Moving downstairs onto the BELOWGROUND space, the installation continues with a number of new works, where the American artist invites visitors to explore the ideas of “embedded history” through his display of mixed media works, apparel, and a shelf filled with customized Reebok Club C sneakers.Just before the exhibition was unveiled, Tyrrell ...

Pen & Paper: Nick Dahlen

Sketching serves as a way for Nick Dahlen to understand the world. Born and based in Minneapolis, the artist captures his observations in surreal drawings, paintings and screen prints that recontexualizes daily life. Broccoli, old men playing chess in the park, a couple cooking together through a window, a dog chasing a mailmen — his aesthetic is unmistakingly bold and his subjects are defined by thick applications of paint and dark shadows reminiscent of 20th Century masters, such as Pablo Picasso and Fernand Léger.Long before Dahlen got his bearings in the art game, however, he was washing windows. While this job would discourage many would-be artists, in hindsight, Dahlen believes it allowed him to truly focus on himself and the expression forming within.“My art represents my life, so I...

Pipilotti Rist Unveils New Site-Specific Video on Facade of M+ Museum

Pipilotti Rist has unveiled a new site-specific video on the facade of the M+ Museum in Hong Kong. Globally recognized for her sensorial videos and installations, the Swiss artist typically creates immersive environments where the audience is invited to sit and observe colorful depictions of the human body, and our changing relationship with technology. In her latest work, Hand Me Your Trust, Rist bypasses the space of a gallery and museum altogether to present a towering meditation on the bustling lights and skyscrapers that constitute the Hong Kong skyline and the hands that made them. Emblematic of her cinematic style, each scene showcases various hands — some abstract, others literal depictions — as they float in and out of space. KAWS Reflects on Time in New Paris Exhibition

It's been over a decade since KAWS has exhibited in Paris. Much has changed in the art world in that time, and especially so for the street artist-turned-global-icon — from his partnerships with Fortnite, AllRightsReserved and General Mills to his rotator belt of vinyl figures and a solo exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum. For his latest solo exhibition, KAWS reflects on the concept of time itself at Skarstedt Gallery's Paris location. The works in TIME OFF stem back to NO EXIT, an earlier painting the artist created in 2020, during the height of confinement. Unlike the narrative depictions of the latter, KAWS' latest paintings are more introspective — serving as a reflection on the fleeting nature of time. CHUM, the artist's Michelin Man-inspired character, is seen throughout each painting,...

Banksy’s Latest Artwork Demolished Shortly After Completion

Banksy had just put the finishing touches on his latest artwork on an abandoned farmhouse in in Kent, England, when shortly after completion, a construction crew demolished the building. Entitled Morning is Broken, the work featured a silhouetted cat and a boy with arms outstretched opening two dilapidated sheets of iron, which were shaped like curtains. The elusive street artist confirmed the artwork on Instagram yesterday, March 16, but it's unclear if he knew of the house's fate. The construction crew certainly wasn't aware, as George Caudwell, one of the contractors in charge told KentOnline they had "no idea it was a Banksy" and felt "sick" upon realization. “We started demolishing it yesterday. The landowner watched us do it and didn’t know either," Caudwell added. This is the second ...

Kehinde Wiley Explores the Beauty and Sadness of Nature in ‘Colorful Realm’

Kehinde Wiley has been working extensively in his hometown of Los Angeles over the past few years — from a statue commission in Crenshaw to a curatorial exhibition with Jeffrey Deitch. To follow, the LA native is showcasing a new body of work entitled Colorful Realm at Roberts Projects on La Brea. For this latest body of work, Wiley was inspired by the nature paintings of Japan's Edo-period, from artists such as Kitagawa Utamaro, Kiyohara Yukinobu, and Utagawa Kunisada, particularly in their use of negative space. “So much of my work is about appearance and showing up and being visible," said Wiley, adding "this dance between exploring the vastness of space within the minimality of this technique I find to be an interesting juxtaposition.”Created with oil on exposed raw linen, Wiley's work...

Former Assistants Accuse Tom Sachs of Running a Scary, “Cult-Like” Studio

There is often a cult that circles around celebrity. Certainly that is the case with Tom Sachs, who for years has garnered a tribal following for his subversive installations, NASA-inspired sculptures, his decade-long partnership with Nike and, of course, the enigmatic studio practice he runs in New York City. Cult is a word that should not be used lightly here, however, as former studio workers have accused Sachs of operating an abusive and oftentimes violent practice. First reported by Curbed, many former managers and assistants (many of which asked for anonymity, fearing retaliation) described a work environment where Sachs would verbally berate them and throw objects if angered — surprising revelations for those on the outside, as Sachs largely portrayed a charming, carefree and creati...
