Ljungberg says Ozil should be in the Arsenal squad

Arsenal legend and former interim head coach Freddie Ljungberg has said that Mesut Ozil should be in the Arsenal squad, according to The Athletic via the Daily Mirror. Ozil was left out of both Arsenal’s Premier League and Europa League squads this season and it seems unlikely that the German midfielder will play for the club again. He has less than a year remaining on his contract with the North London side and will leave for free next summer. Arsenal can revise their squad in February following the January transfer window and so it is not impossible for Ozil to work his way back into the team but it seems very unlikely.  Ljungberg was appointed interim head coach of Arsenal in November 2019 after former Gunners boss Unai Emery was sacked. He managed the North London club for 22 days...

Andre-Villas Boas: Marcelo Bielsa’s nomination for The Best FIFA Coach award ‘scandalous’

Marseille boss Andre-Villas Boas has taken a swipe at Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa’s nomination for The Best FIFA Coach Award. The Argentine has joined a five-match shortlist that also includes Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, Sevilla’s Julen Lopetegui and Bayern Munich’s Champions League-winning coach Hansi Flick. Bielsa was at the helm as Leeds returned to the top flight of the English game for the first time in 2004, but Villas-Boas has suggested that these achievements pale into comparison with other coaches who have been overlooked. “Bielsa? Bielsa has to win a prestigious trophy,” he told the media on Friday. “But he’s not among the best five coaches in the world in 2020. It’s a scandal. He won the Championship!” Villas-Boas, who risks provoking the M...

Report: Arsenal’s chances of signing young midfielder improve after discipline issue

Houssem Aouar is set to miss this weekend’s match after refusing to participate in the post-match warm down against Angers. Aouar was an unused substitute in Sunday’s fixture, as his side came away 1-0 winners thanks to Tinotenda Kadewere’s late strike. Despite not featuring, the midfielder was expected to complete a 30 minute warm down in order to keep his fitness up. He refused, citing the state of the pitch as his reason not to. Aouar hasn’t played since the win against Saint Etienne In response, the Lyon hierarchy have decided to exclude Aouar from the squad to face Reims on Sunday, according to l’Equipe. Leeds boss kicks against fans returning to stadiums

Marcelo Bielsa has demanded Premier League chiefs block fans returning to grounds until all 20 top-flight clubs can reopen their turnstiles. Under the new Covid tier system, half of Premier League clubs will still not be allowed supporters from Wednesday, while the other ten can have 2,000. Leeds are in Tier 3 and must keep fans locked out – with boss Bielsa saying: “If fans are not allowed in all stadiums, then they should not be allowed until everyone can. “Clubs shouldn’t have to deal with the consequences of being in a category. It should be about trying to maintain the competition as equally as possible.” Arsenal will become the first Prem team to welcome fans back since March when they host Rapid Vienna in the Europa League on Thursday. While West Ham’s Prem clash with Manchester Uni...

Report: Arsenal plotting January move for Tottenham-linked midfield ace

Arsenal are thought to be keen on signing the RB Salzburg midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai. The Hungarian international has done exceedingly well for Salzburg over the past year and it is hardly a surprise that the top clubs are queuing up to secure his services. According to Football Insider, Arsenal are looking to sign the player permanently when the transfer window re-opens in January and then loan him back to the Austrian club for the remainder of the season. The Gunners believe such a deal would be attractive for RB Salzburg and it could help them fend off the competition for the midfielder’s signature. Apparently, Tottenham are keen on the player as well. Arsenal have been following the player for two years now and they have close connections with his camp. It will be interesting t...

Report: Goal-shy Arsenal snub chance to sign Eriksen and want to sign a central defender

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has snubbed the opportunity to sign Christian Eriksen and has instead prioritised the signing of a central defender despite his side struggling to create goal-scoring opportunities, according to Paul Brown of the Daily Star. Christian Eriksen moved to Inter Milan from Tottenham Hotspur in January 2020 for £17 million. He was expected to be the creative hub of the Italian side but did not fit into head coach Antonio Conte’s system and so has been a bit-part player. This season, he has made just seven appearances for the Nerazzurri in all competitions and has not had a hand in a single goal. Out of these seven appearances, he has come off the bench three times.  The Denmark international is deemed surplus to requirements at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza and wil...

Report: Arsenal reignite interest in £22m midfielder after missing out on him last January

Arsenal are still keeping a close eye on Sander Berge and could make a move for the Sheffield United midfielder, according to reports from Norwegian outlet VG. The Gunners were one of the many Premier League clubs that showed interest in singing Berge before he joined the Blades for the then club-record deal worth £22m in January 2020. The player quickly settled in and was considered one of the outstanding signings of the transfer window thanks to displays like these. While Sheffield have been really poor in the Premier League this season, managing just one point from nine games, Berge has been superb for them, producing eye-catching displays against Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea. Arsenal have continued to monitor his progress, and are potentially weighing up a move for ...
