Kieran Tierney hopeful victory over Chelsea a turning point for Arsenal

Kieran Tierney is hopeful Arsenal’s 3-1 win over Chelsea can be a springboard to climbing the table. The Gunners came into the game on the back of a winless run in the league dating back to the start of November. Coach Mikel Arteta was forced into a reshuffle due to illness and a coronavirus scare , and the changes paid off for the Spanish coach as his side looked far more hungry than Chelsea. Alexandre Lacazette’s penalty following a foul by Reece James on Tierney set them on their way on 34 minutes. A brilliant free kick from Granit Xhaka on the stroke of half-time doubled the advantage, and Bukayo Saka’s cross-cum-shot over Edouard Mendy secured the three points despite Tammy Abraham netting a late goal for Chelsea. The win does little for Arsenal’s position in the table, as they only m...

Atletico Madrid interested in signing Arsenal’s Maitland-Niles

Atletico Madrid are preparing to submit a bid for Ainsley Maitland-Niles in the January transfer window, according to Sky Sports. The Spanish giants will be without Kieran Trippier for 13 games after he received a ten week ban for breaching betting rules by the English FA. Initially, Atletico were set to still play the former Tottenham Hotspur defender as they were unsure if the ban would be upheld outside of England. FIFA have since confirmed that the player’s ban will be implemented worldwide.  As a result of Trippier missing a large chunk of the second half of the season, the Madrid-based club are set to test Arsenal’s resolve by making an offer for Maitland-Niles. They have been keeping tabs on the player for the last twelve months and rate him highly. Diego Simeone’s side are on ...

Inter Milan and Arsenal have been in talks for several days over a deal that would see Christian Eriksen head to the Emirates but Paris Saint-Germain could enter the race for the Denmark international, according to Italian media outlet Calciomercato. The Italian club’s CEO Giuseppe Marotta recently made it clear that Eriksen is not in their plans and will leave Milan in the January transfer window, according to Sky Sports Italy via Fabrizio Romano. Inter CEO Marotta to @SkySport: “Yes, I can confirm that Christian Eriksen is on the transfer list. He’s gonna leave in January. He’s not functional to our plans and he had difficulty here at Inter. I think it’s right that Christian goes away to find more space”. 🇩🇰 #Eriksen — Fabrizio Romano (@Fabri...

Predicted Chelsea starting Line-up vs Arsenal

Chelsea travel to the Emirates on Boxing Day where Frank Lampard’s men will aim to heap more misery on their London rivals. The Gunners have won only one of their last 10 league games and they currently sit four points above the drop zone going into today’s derby. This is the first meeting between both sides since the FA Cup final in August and given Arsenal’s current form, the Blues have a perfect opportunity to exact revenge. It seems like a long time ago when Lampard declared his side injury-free in his pre-match conference for the game against Leeds. Since then, a good number of Chelsea players have been sidelined and will miss the heavyweight clash tonight. Hakim Ziyech pulled up less than 15 minutes into the Leeds game and hasn’t played since then. As confirmed by his manager, he is ...

The Best Late Goals in Football

Scoring a late goal is undoubtedly one of the most thrilling parts of football – unless you happen to be on the receiving end! The sport’s history is littered with late goals that have helped teams win trophies, clinch promotion, avoid relegation or get one over their closest rivals. As none of the Sportslens team can remember much further back than the 1970s, we take a look at some of the best late goals of the past five decades. Michael Thomas vs Arsenal (1989) Arsenal travelled to Liverpool on the final day of the 1988/89 season needing to win by two clear goals to pip the Merseyside outfit to the title. Leading 1-0 with just seconds to play, Michael Thomas broke free of Liverpool’s defence to fire home and secure top spot for the Gunners. The look of abject horror in the home ranks mer...

Inter Milan confirm Christian Eriksen on transfer list

Christian Eriksen could have played his last match for Inter Milan, with club CEO Giuseppe Marotta confirming Wednesday the Danish midfielder was on the transfer list. The former Tottenham midfielder missed Inter’s final game before Christmas at Verona on Wednesday, with Italian media reporting he had returned to Denmark to be with his wife who is due to give birth to their second child. “Eriksen is among the transfers,” Marotta told Sky Sport before the game. “It’s not a punishment but he has struggled to settle into the squad… so it is right to give him the opportunity to find more space elsewhere.” The Danish international arrived from Spurs on four-and-a-half-year deal in January for a reported fee of 27.5 million euros including bonuses. But the 28-year-old has scored just four goals ...

‘We are talking about it yes’: Arteta claims £27m Arsenal player could leave in January

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has claimed that William Saliba could leave the Gunners on loan in the January transfer window. The Gunners lost 4-1 in the Carabao Cup clash against Manchester City on Tuesday night, where Arteta gave chances to several young players. However, Saliba – who joined the club for a reported fee of £27m in 2019 from French side Saint-Etienne – wasn’t included in the squad. When asked why he didn’t feature, Arteta responded that the club has taken the decision to not include him even though he was eligible to play in the EFL Cup. He added that the club is looking to loan him out next month. Arteta said about Saliba, as quoted by Football London: “He cannot be involved because he’s not in the squad. “No we made the decision with him and we will ...

From FA cup winners to relegation candidates: What’s gone wrong for Arsenal?

Last season, Mikel Arteta managed to inspire a somewhat average Arsenal side to FA Cup glory. Arsenal backed up this triumph by beating champions, Liverpool, in the Community Shield. It appeared as though Arteta could be the man to emulate Wenger and bring success back to the Emirates. Arsenal fans had a renewed sense of optimism and belief. But as the saying goes – it’s the hope that kills you. When Arsene Wenger finally decided it was time to say goodbye at Arsenal; it was obvious that there would be big changes at the club. Wenger’s Arsenal were so consistent, they were often snubbed as boring by rival fans. However, Wenger’s replacement, Unai Emery was anything but consistent. Emery was not well-liked by Arsenal fans and in the end his sacking was inevitable. He left with Arsenal in a ...

Arsenal players face 25% wage-cut if the club is relegated from the Premier League

Arsenal’s first team players face a 25 percent wage-cut if the club is relegated to the Championship, according to the Daily Mail. The Gunners currently spend more than £150 million every year on player wages. If they were to get relegated from the Premier League, the wage bill would drop by £37.5 million. The practice of including clauses in players’ contracts in order to safeguard the clubs’ interests in the event of relegation is common practice at smaller clubs who usually face a realistic threat of going down. It is noteworthy that the North London side, the third most successful club in English football and part of the traditional Big Six, have planned for the possibility of relegation by including pay-cut clauses in the contracts of their players.  It is unclear if the entire p...

‘Absolutely outstanding’: Rio Ferdinand claims Everton man kept £72m Arsenal star in his pocket

Former Manchester United defender turned popular football pundit Rio Ferdinand has showered praise on the Everton defence and particularly Ben Godfrey following their latest win. Everton have moved to fourth in the Premier League table following their 2-1 win against Arsenal at Goodison Park last weekend. After a slump in form, the Toffees have now picked up three wins in a row, beating the likes of Chelsea, Leicester City and Arsenal. Ferdinand feels that Everton’s resurgence is down to their solid foundation at the back. With Lucas Digne and Seamus Coleman injured, Carlo Ancelotti was forced to use the likes of Mason Holgate and Godfrey at the back, and it clicked for them. Godfrey, who joined the Toffees during the summer transfer window for a reported fee of £25m from Norwich, has...

Pep Guardiola: No new striker for Manchester City due to coronavirus impact

Manchester City’s strikers will have to rediscover their scoring touch because reinforcements will not be signed in January, manager Pep Guardiola has said. Guardiola explained that even with the backing of their Abu Dhabi owners, City were subject to the same financial pressures as their rivals due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. City have scored only twice in their last three league games but hope to welcome back Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus for Tuesday’s League Cup quarter-final with Arsenal. However, the League Cup holders’ record goalscorer Argentinian Sergio Aguero is sidelined by an undisclosed issue having had knee and illness problems already this season. Asked about the prospect of new blood coming to the club, Guardiola replied: “No I don’t think so because the eco...
