The member representing Isoko South Constituency 1, in the Delta State House of Assembly, Kenneth Ogba, is dead. His death is coming barely six months after the former Majority Leader of the Delta Assembly, Hon. Tim Owhefere, died in Asaba. It was gathered that Ogba died on Sunday evening, at Oleh in Isoko South Local Government Area of the State, after attending a function in the area in the afternoon. The lawmaker was said to have been rushed to a hospital in the town where doctors pronounced him dead. Sources had it that the deceased died of unspecified heart-related disease. Former Gov. Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala of Oyo State and Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Sunday Akin Dare, have applauded the late former Governor of the state, Sen. Abia: Police go unconventional, places juju in front of station
The Nigerian police in Abia have adopted unconventional method of fighting crime by placing a deity-like juju on a check point in Umuahia, the state capital. The object was placed on St. Finbarr’s/Bende Roads Junction adjacent the Central Police Station (CPS), Umuahia. When newsmen visited the area, a policeman was seen posing with the juju as other policemen armed to the teeth were seen stationed strategically around the junction. NSCDC raids illegal mining centre, confiscates 700kg of precious stones
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Zamfara Command, has raided an illegal mining centre at Sawa village, Talata Mafara Local Government Area, and confiscated 700kg of precious stones. The command’s Public Relation Officer, Aminu Ismail, made the disclosure while briefing newsmen on Thursday in Gusau. Ismail said that the command received information from the Mining Officer of the Federal Ministry of Mining that some people in the local community had engaged in illegal mining in the area. He said that the command immediately mobilised personnel to the area, adding that none of the suspects was arrested, but a total of 14 bags of 50kg were found fully loaded with precious stones. A group of Russians detained by the police in a part of northern Chad where the army has been battling a rebel invasion from Libya said on Wednesday that they were tourists who had come to sightsee in the Sahara Desert. The roughly 10 Russians were picked up last week by the police near the town of Faya Largeau because they were in a military operational zone, according to national police spokesperson Amane Issac Azina. South Africa gems that sparked rush are quartz not diamonds
The South African government says that stones found in a village last month are not diamonds but quartz. A cattle herder first uncovered the stones in KwaZulu-Natal province. It prompted thousands to rush to KwaHlathi village, more than 300km (186 miles) south-east of Johannesburg. But after conducting tests, officials have said the stones are quartz crystals, which are far less valuable. After feldspar, quartz is the most abundant mineral in the Earth’s crust. “The tests conducted conclusively revealed that the stones discovered in the area are not diamonds,” a local government statement reportedly said. Some residents of Bauchi metropolis have expressed concerned over the erratic power supply in the area. Liverpool have been given the go-ahead to expand Anfield by around 7,000 seats, taking the total capacity at their historic stadium to more than 61,000. City council planners voted in favour of the redevelopment of the Anfield Road Stand on Tuesday, despite concerns expressed by residents and environmental groups about the impact on nearby Stanley Park.
