The indie sleaze era had it all. Sky Ferreira hanging out with Taylor Swift at Katy Perry’s birthday party. A maximalist approach to fashion (no one would bat an eye at pairing shutter shades with a bikini top indoors). Skins parties that recreated the debauchery from the hit British series. Fan-run Tumblr accounts dedicated to the relationship of Alexa Chung and Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner. Wild nights out captured with cameras instead of phones — with flash photography a must. It’s been a decade since this cultural phenomenon ended, but it’s left an enormous footprint on music and fashion. The initial spark came shortly after 9/11, with bands like the Strokes and Interpol releasing their debut albums. It wasn’t until the mid-2000s that indie sleaze became a widespread craze — rea...
Arctic Monkeys are getting ready to roll. The group has played a few small headlining shows and made an appearance at Primavera Sound Los Angeles a few weekends ago. Now, the group has shared, “Body Paint,” the second single off their upcoming album The Car. The band debuted the song at their show in Brooklyn last week. [embedded content][embedded content] The video was directed by Brook Linder and filmed in London and Missouri. Last month, the band released “There’d Better Be A Mirrorball,” which is moody, nostalgic and melodic, with a tinge of vintage pop. It has a similar vibe to “Body Paint.” In a statement, the album, which is their first since 2018’s Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino, is billed as “wild in a new and sumptuous musical landscape.” The Car was produced by longtime co...
Last week, Arctic Monkeys announced they’d be releasing their first new album in four years. Now, the band has unveiled its first single. Titled “There’d Better Be A Mirrorball,” the song is moody, nostalgic and melodic, with a tinge of vintage pop vibes sprinkled in for good measure. The Monkeys shared a cinematic video to accompany the song. [embedded content][embedded content] The new album, The Car, is out Oct. 21 on Domino Records. The 10-track project is the follow-up to 2018’s Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino, Arctic Monkeys’ sixth-straight No. 1 debut in the U.K. and the fastest-selling vinyl album there since 1993. The Car was produced by longtime collaborator James Ford and recorded in Paris, London and Suffolk, U.K. Arctic Monkeys have international touring on tap through the end...
Arctic Monkeys will release their seventh album, The Car, on Oct. 21 via Domino, on which the band runs “wild in a new and sumptuous musical landscape,” according to a statement. The 10-track project is the follow up to 2018’s Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino, Arctic Monkeys’ sixth-straight No. 1 debut in the U.K. and the fastest-selling vinyl album there since 1993. It was also the group’s third top 10 on The Billboard 200 in the U.S. The Car was produced by longtime collaborator James Ford and recorded in Paris, London and Suffolk, U.K. No first single has yet been announced, but Arctic Monkeys debuted album track “I Ain’t Quite Where I Think I Am” yesterday (Aug. 23) during a show in Zurich. The song sports an uncharacteristically funky groove and frontman Alex Turner singing in a style ...
In the fourth and final installment of her weeklong series in which she hangs out and performs music with Matt Helders, Nandi Bushell sat down with the Arctic Monkeys drummer to conduct the very first interview of her young career. Helders and the 11-year-old rock prodigy discussed poignant topics like their top five favorite bands, the hardest songs to perform, and a whole lot more (including Bushell using the opportunity to ask Helders if she could perform on the next Arctic Monkeys album) before turning it into an impromptu jam session. After watching the duo cover tracks like ‘R U Mine?’ and ‘Brainstorm’ over the last couple of days (and “I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor” before that, it was nice to see them improvise and riff off of each other in their latest performance. Accordi...
The internet’s new favorite pair, 11-year old Nandi Bushell and the band’s drummer, Matt Helders, are back with part two of their four-part collaboration, taking on “R U Mine?” from Arctic Monkeys’ 2013 album, AM and “Brainstorm” with both on their respective drumkits. Bushell shared both clips to her social media, writing “Matt Helders came to my house for a cup of Tea and a Jam with me.” For “R U Mine?” Helders used Bushell’s drumkit labeled with “Peace, Respect, Love” while his sat in the background. Meanwhile, Bushell hopped on guitar, crushing through the song and its riffs. [embedded content] Both musicians kept their game faces on for “Brianstorm,” which you can watch below. As she promised over the weekend, Nandi Bushell teamed up with Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders for a jam — which in this case is a cover of the band’s “I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor.” When the clip starts, Bushell says “Believe the hype or don’t believe the hype?” to which Helders responds, “don’t believe the hype.” The interplay is a nod to Arctic Monkeys singer Alex Turner in a live video from years back. Though she’s usually been seen behind the kit, Bushell straps on a guitar and they take off from there on the three-minute instrumental jam. Check it out. On her YouTube page, Bu...
In the past year or so, Nandi Bushell has captured the hearts and minds of both major rock stars and rock fans with her outstanding takes on classics. The 11-year-old though has a lot more to come, especially if her latest collaboration is to be released in the near future. In an Instagram Story posted on Saturday, Bushell revealed that Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders paid her a visit and that the two have a “jam” and “interview” on the way. What that means, who knows, but it should be noted that Bushell previously covered Arctic Monkeys’ “Brianstorm” last year. After a flurry of activity at the beginning of the year, Bushell has been quiet in recent weeks. However, she did post a cover of Linkin Park’s “Numb,” which, of course, the band approved of. She also took on Slipknot’s “...
Since we have no idea when we’ll realistically be able to attend concerts again (at least, without hazmat suits), NPR is bringing the concerts to us. For nearly a dozen years, the radio station streamed shows from Washington D.C.’s iconic 9:30 Club, and now they’re sharing the entire archive with us as a way to celebrate the venue’s 40th anniversary (it opened on May 31, 1980). The streams range from NPR Music’s very first 9:30 Club show with Bright Eyes in 2005 to the station’s 10th anniversary party in 2017, featuring artists like Margo Price, Bon Iver, and Jeff Tweedy. Each piece in the vault comes equipped with streaming audio, and in later years video, along with the show’s original writeup. With more than 100 concerts to choose from, you might not be done digging by the tim...
