Tritonal Switched Gears During the Pandemic and Wrote a Meditation Album: Listen

Trance titans Tritonal are well known to be a chart-topping act. Flexing their unique trance stylings with a mainstage edge, the duo have dominated the genre for a decade and amassed over a billion streams worldwide.  During the pandemic, however, Tritonal saw fit to take the downtime for some introspection, and the result is phenomenal. Taking a step back from the center stage of progressive house and trance, Tritonal have now put forth their newest offering, Reverence. A ruminative and pensive album through and through, Reverence is unlike any of Tritonal’s previous releases. Released on Earth Day and crafted for a meditative experience, the album offers soothing and ambient soundscapes that will take listeners on a journey through their own consciousness.  Soulful, ...

Lose Yourself in Zeds Dead’s Trippy New Ambient Track, “late night drive”

New year, new Zeds Dead. The iconic dubstep duo has released “late night drive,” a trippy ambient track. While the song represents a departure from their more turbulent tunes, longtime fans will be delighted to hear elements of Zeds Dead’s signature wobbly sound design here, which is elegantly tucked away in a hypnotic downtempo backbone. More ballad than banger, the song is a mouthwatering tease of the pair’s upcoming Catching Z’s mixtape.   Upon its release, Catching Z’s will be the first project to be unveiled under Zeds Dead’s new Altered States banner. The album is said to champion electronic, chill, and downtempo sounds, and will feature 13 new songs. Zeds Dead is also offering up two new merch dro...

Unborn Baby Records Debut Album

For decades, musicians have recorded music with the specific intent of helping foster child development in utero and teach soon-to-be kids iconic rap hooks. Now the tables have turned: an unborn baby has recorded her debut album, presumably for the enjoyment of full-grown humans. The baby, named Luca Yupanqui, is the soon-to-be child of Psychic Ills bassist Elizabeth Hart and Lee “Scratch” Perry collaborator Iván Diaz Mathé. Yupanqui created the songs on her album using biosonic MIDI technology that translated her in-utero movements into sound. The MIDI device was hooked to Hart’s stomach, recorded the vibrations created by Yupanqui, and transcribed them into Mathé’s synthesizers, a meditative process that took place over five hour-long sessions. Hart and Mathé then edited and mixed the re...

R.I.P. Harold Budd, Legendary Ambient Composer Dead at 84

Harold Budd, the legendary avant-garde ambient composer, has died at 84. His frequent collaborator Robin Guthrie of Cocteau Twins confirmed the news on Facebook, writing, “It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Harold Budd. Rest in peace, poet of the piano.” Born in Los Angeles in 1936, Budd quickly took to music at a young age. He played the drums growing up and, once enrolled at Los Angeles City College, signed up for a music theory course in harmony. Budd briefly stepped away to enlist in the army, where he met Albert Ayler, the avant-garde saxophonist and his eventual bandmate for a short spell. Once back, Budd studied under composer Gerald Strang at San Fernando Valley State College and was deeply moved by a lecture John Cage delivered while attending the school, g...

Jónsi Soars and Crashes (in a Good Way) on Shiver: Review

The Lowdown: On Shiver, his first solo album in 10 years, Icelandic artist Jónsi presents atmospheric electronic art-pop, which balances uplift with glitchy dread. With band Sigur Rós on indefinite hiatus, and after separating from his longtime partner/collaborator, the singer-songwriter-composer now lives in LA and had his first visual-art exhibition last fall. Those themes of the uncomfortable freedom of dislocation and transition are reflected on the songs of Shiver, which soar, short-out, crash and re-boot. [embedded content] The Good: While Jónsi’s mystical countertenor voice has often been associated with glacial fjords and forests thick with elves, Shiver evokes dark landscapes that are more industrial and interior. The 45-year-old multi-instrumentalist teamed up with en vogue young...

Sigur Rós Launch Line of CBD Tinctures

Sigur Rós have announced their very own line of CBD tinctures in partnership with VONA. The Icelandic art rockers’ CBD extracts come in two strains called SLEEP and WAKE. The names are pretty self-explanatory: SLEEP is meant to help you “drift off into the ethereal,” while WAKE will “help you start your day feeling alive.” Each bottle contains 1000mg of the full-spectrum 100% organic, gluten- and vegan-friendly CBD derived from hemp. SLEEP apparently tastes like “spiced rose and lemon”, while WAKE is “fresh citrus pine” flavored. Bottles of the first batch of Sigur Rós’ CBD tinctures are retailing at $58 each, and you can get them via VONA. They’re currently only shipping to addresses in the US. This actually isn’t the first time Sigur Rós have entered the CBD market. In 2017, they teamed ...

Julianna Barwick Announces New Album Healing Is a Miracle, Shares “Inspirit”: Stream

Julianna Barwick has announced a new album called Healing Is a Miracle just in time to help soothe our global anxiety. It’s her first record in four years and is due out on July 10th via Ninja Tune. To celebrate, she’s shared the lead single, “Inspirit”, along with a scenic music video that captures the mood. Healing Is a Miracle was built on improvisation, reflection, and collaboration. In particular, the latter takes shape in the form of some very notable guest features by Jónsi of Sigur Rós, Nosaj Thing, and Mary Lattimore. While this may appear like a departure from her past work, the press release assures that Healing Is a Miracle is a natural evolution from her previous albums, including 2016’s Will and 2013’s Nepenthe. Barwick began drafting ideas for Healing Is a Miracle last sprin...

Moog Announces New Subharmonicon Analog Synthesizer, Shares Musical Score by Suzanne Ciani

Moog has unveiled its new analog synthesizer, the Subharmonicon. The instrument finally arrives on the consumer market after a prototype version was teased during a workshop at Moogfest, the company’s curated music festival, in 2018. To commemorate the occasion, Moog shared a short film, Music as Living Matter, featuring a score by electronic music pioneer Suzanne Ciani, composed entirely with the Subharmonicon. The hype is well deserved. The early models used during Moogfest sold for thousands on the second hand market, leaving artists and hobbyists wondering when the instrument would see an official rollout, much like Moog’s Werkstaat. The latest evolution in Moog’s arsenal of semi-modular analog synths, the Subharmonicon offers a limitless creative portal worthy of the iconic brand. To ...
