Amazon Music will expand its ad-free offering for Prime members from 2 million songs to more than 100 million songs, the company announced on Tuesday (November 1). Along with the increased access to music, Amazon announced that Prime members will also have access to a wide-selection of ad-free podcasts, plus a newly launched Podcast Previews feature that lets listeners easily test snippets of episodes to see if they like them. “When Amazon Music first launched for Prime members, we offered an ad-free catalog of 2 million songs, which was completely unique for music streaming at the time,” Steve Boom, vp of Amazon Music, said in a statement. “We continue… to bring eve...
Universal Music Group, Hipgnosis Songs Fund and other music stocks got a much-needed boost on Tuesday (Oct. 25) following news of Apple Music’s price hike, as investors bet it would trigger a wave of streaming subscription cost increases. Universal Music Group’s stock closed 11.6% higher, Hipgnosis Songs Fund Ltd ended up 7.8% and Korean music companies SM Entertainment and HYBE finished the trading day 4.8% and 4.4% higher, respectfully, on Tuesday. On Monday, Apple announced that it was raising the standard U.S. and U.K. individual plan price to $10.99 from $9.99. This 10% price hike — Apple’s first — comes amid high inflation and a darkening economic environment in many global markets. If Apple can raise prices at a time like this, that is a sign the music industry can charge more ...

Broadcasting bi-weekly, We’ve Got Company is described as “a talk show inside of a sitcom.” Rebillet and his guests will create music on the fly, interact with viewers, play video games and more, all inside the world of a zany TV sitcom hosted by Loop Daddy himself. While the episode with Francis is technically the second episode in the series, it will be the broadcast debut of We’ve Got Company since the pilot with Lotus never made the air due to technical difficulties. You better watch Marc Rebillet‘s new show or he will be very upset with you. Titled We’ve Got Company, the program will feature special guests, gaming, audience interaction, and of course, some improvised performances from Rebillet and his friends. Described by Rebillet as “a talk show inside of sitcom,” the first episode of We’ve Got Company will feature an appearance from the multimedia mastermind Flying Lotus filmed in the style of those classic, comforting TV shows. Neil Young followed up his withdraw from Spotify last week by entering what appears to be a partnership with Amazon Music, offering his fans a free four-month trial and demonstrating the narrow scope of his activist stand. The legendary songwriter had given the Big Green Circle an ultimatum — stop platforming Joe Rogan’s COVID-19 misinformation, or he’d take his business elsewhere. Spotify chose Rogan; no surprise, considering they had reportedly invested more than $100 million to make his podcast Spotify exclusive. But the decision sparked a chain reaction that saw #CancelSpotify trend on Twitter, as other icons such as Joni Mitchell and Nils Lofgren of Crazy Horse and the E Street Band pulled their own music in solidarity with Young. Spotify lost $4 billion in market value in l...

Immersive and spatial audio are becoming the next step forward in audio. Trance group Above & Beyond have now teamed up with Amazon Music to share remixes in Dolby Atmos’ spatial audio format. Reworked tracks include “Almost Home,” “Screwdriver,” and “1995” by gardenstate. When listening to the album, take note of how various synths and percussive instruments are placed in the mix. The percussion seems larger, synths have more room to move amongst the melodies, and time-based effects (like delay and reverb) fill in the space much more fluidly, giving the tracks a totally new feel. Listen to Above & Beyond and Amazon Music’s spatial audio playlist below. Recommended Articles Spatial audio is a new form of technology that brin...
