Bell Biv DeVoe & Nelly to Bring Throwback Hip-Hop to American Music Awards

Bell Biv DeVoe and Nelly will each perform a medley of hits from their multiplatinum debut albums on the American Music Awards. The three-hour show is set for Sunday on ABC. The announcement was made on ABC’s Dancing With the Stars on Monday (Nov. 16), where Nelly is a semifinalist on season 29 of the hit show. Bell Biv DeVoe will perform a medley of its first two singles, “Poison” and “Do Me!” Both songs reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1990. Both were featured on the trio’s album, Poison, which reached No. 5 on the Billboard 200. The album was at the forefront of the new jack swing movement that combined elements of traditional soul and R&B with hip-hop. Bell Biv DeVoe, which consists of Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins and Ronnie DeVoe, first appeared on the AMAs in 1991 performi...

Shawn Mendes, Megan Thee Stallion & More to Perform at 2020 American Music Awards

Bad Bunny will team with rising reggaeton star (and fellow Puerto Rico native) Jhay Cortez. Bad Bunny performed “I Like It,” his smash collab with Cardi B and J Balvin, on the AMAs two years ago. These will be the first performances on the show by Megan Thee Stallion and Lil Baby. Lil Baby is set to perform his hit “Emotionally Scarred” live for the first time. The song was the third single from his sophomore album My Turn, which has logged five weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. (Only Taylor Swift’s folklore has logged more weeks at No. 1 in 2020.) It’s fitting that the AMAs are highlighting performances by Latin and rap/hip-hop stars. The AMAs this year are increasing their number of Latin categories from one to four and the number of rap/hip-hop categories from three to four. The AMAs...

American Music Awards Adds Three Latin Categories, Matching It With Soul/R&B and Rap/Hip-Hop

The expansion of coverage for Latin music in the AMAs is a clear signal of the genre’s increasing popularity and crossover appeal. The AMAs are a ratings-driven show. If they do something, it’s because they think it’s what the audience wants and demands. A quick history lesson: Dick Clark created the AMAs in 1973 as a more viewer-friendly, populist answer to the Grammy Awards. Clark, a canny showman, seemed to be saying, “Let the Grammys honor classical and jazz and all the other specialized music forms. We’ll zero in on the genres that most people care about.” For the first five years of the show, 1974-78, there were just 15 awards — five each in the three genres with the broadest appeal at the time — pop/rock, soul/R&B and country. In 1979, disco was red-hot. The show res...

Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Cardi B & More Potential Record-Setters at the 2020 American Music Awards

Swift is also nominated for favorite music video for “Cardigan.” She won last year for “You Need to Calm Down.” She’s vying to become the first two-time winner in the category since it was re-introduced in 2017. The other nominees for favorite music video are Doja Cat’s “Say So,” Future ft. Drake‘s “Life Is Good,” Lady Gaga & Ariana Grande’s “Rain on Me” and The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights.” Bieber is vying for his fourth award as favorite male artist – pop/rock. That would, likewise, set a record in this category. The Bieb is currently tied for the lead with Barry Manilow, Michael Bolton, Eric Clapton and Michael Jackson, with three awards each. The other two nominees in that category are Post Malone, who won two years ago, and The Weeknd. There are separate male and female awards...
