COVID-19 Is Playing at My House: How LCD Soundsystem and Their Fans Gambled and Lost

LCD Soundsystem have made a career out of iconic lines, from, “Daft Punk is playing at my house,” to “I’m losing my edge,” but nothing they’ve written has been quite as prescient as, “[U]s playing the show is no way an indicator that it’s safe to attend.” The band posted those words in a December 17th statement explaining why they wouldn’t be cancelling their residency at Brooklyn Steel, despite private misgivings and a COVID-19 surge in New York City. Two days later, they finally pulled the plug, bowing to outside pressure as well as a growing unease within the band. Before that happened, scores of concert-goers may have been infected with the novel coronavirus. Consequence has spoken to over a dozen people who attended the residency, all of whom say they have had at least the first ...

Dave Navarro and Anthony Kiedis Reunite to Cover Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side”: Watch

Remember when Dave Navarro pissed off every Red Hot Chili Peppers fan by replacing John Frusciante? Well, over two decades after Navarro’s infamously tumultuous departure from the band, the guitarist made an unexpected onstage reunion last night (December 20th) with none other than the lead Chili Pepper himself, Anthony Kiedis, for a rendition of Lou Reed’s classic “Walk on the Wild Side.” This reunion was fairly spur of the moment; Navarro recently put together a charity concert called Above Ground benefiting MusiCares at the Fonda Theater in Los Angeles, with performances paying tribute to the Sex Pistols’ Never Mind the Bollocks and Lou Reed’s Transformer. The roster of high-profile guests included Billy Idol and Foo Fighters’ Taylor Hawkins, but they both had to back out of l...

Thom Yorke Debuts The Smile’s “Free in the Knowledge” At First Post-Lockdown Performance: Watch

Since Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood announced the formation of their post-punk band The Smile back in May, fans have been eager to get their ears on any and all new material. Today, Yorke’s solo October performance of the group’s song “Free in the Knowledge” was officially uploaded to YouTube. Watch it below. Yorke debuted the song at a Letters Live event at London’s Royal Albert Hall, which marked his first performance since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. As such, Yorke had plenty to say before going into the track: “There was a point maybe a year-and-a-half ago where I wondered whether I’d ever be doing this again. This is the first time I’ve been on the stage since the pandemic happened. I’m a British musician and I was told during the pandemic, along with all...

Top 12 Live Shows of 2021

Our 2021 Annual Report continues with our Top Live Shows list. As the year winds down, stay tuned for more awards, lists, and articles about the best music, film, and TV of 2021. You can find it all in one place here. Not to be dramatic, but the absence of live music for the majority of 2020 was miserable. In the face of some serious global trauma, many of us were looking for a communal experience to lift us up. Yet, with each scary news headline came an even scarier thought: Would live music ever return? And when it did, would it be the same? Lucky for us concertgoers, the first major wave of COVID-19 vaccinations in early 2021 allowed for us to visualize a world in which concerts could return safely, and as summer rolled around, we emerged from the fray and experienced live music again. ...
